Chapter 1: Human-faced Butterfly
HKUST, inside the classroom.
Xie Mian supported his head with one hand, his eyes blank, facing the window.
Just as he was wondering what flavor of birthday cake Lin Heng would make for him today.
His eyes were suddenly attracted by the scene in the classroom opposite -
In the classroom across the street, a man and woman who were secretly kissing turned into two butterflies and flew out of the window...
It's obviously summer.
A dense chill rose up my spine.
The two butterflies kept flying higher and higher, and their bodies became bigger and bigger.
Like two huge lanterns, standing outside the window.
Xie Mian was so shocked by the scene before him that he was speechless.
He suddenly stood up from his seat and shouted to the students who hadn't noticed anything unusual:
"Be careful with the window..."
Before the word "outside" came out of his mouth, an even more bizarre scene appeared -
The classmates who were just in class together are now all gone.
"Ism talks about...Okay, here's the key point, let's draw it!"
The originally noisy classroom became so quiet that you could hear a pin drop.
The entire classroom was empty, with only the sound of the general introduction teacher mechanically and numbly reading the PPT.
A chill ran down my spine and across my entire body.
Xie Mian clenched the carbon pen in his hand, with the tip facing outward, and slowly moved his body so that his back was pressed against the wall.
Steaming milk tea...
The open pages of the book...
The seat panel that rocks up and down...
And clothes scattered on every seat.
Everything that happened was real and not fake!
I don't know why everyone disappeared, and only myself and the general theory teacher are still there...
"No, maybe they're not gone!"
Something seemed to be wriggling among the clothes scattered on the ground.
Xie Mian glanced at the giant butterfly outside the window, and a terrifying guess arose in his mind:
"Teacher, stop reading and run!"
Looking at the clothes bulging higher and higher on the ground, Xie Mian quickly jumped onto the desk.
He took two steps at a time, stepped on the desks, and ran towards the front door closest to him.
His legs were very long and he reached the door in just a few steps.
The moment the door opened, screams, shouts, running... all kinds of sounds poured in.
The rest of the place outside the classroom was already in chaos.
The corridors were filled with students and teachers running for their lives.
"What happened? Is there a fire?"
The middle-aged teacher who had been reading the PPT with his head down raised his head, looked at the scene outside the door in a panic and asked.
It’s not safe outside the classroom, but it’s even more dangerous inside the classroom!
He pulled the male teacher, who was still looking around, out of the classroom.
Xie Mian closed the door the moment the butterfly flew over.
The sound of banging on the door continued to ring out.
Ignoring the male teacher's frantic questioning, Xie Mian stared through the glass window on the door with a frown on his face.
The butterflies in the classroom were also growing rapidly.
As the butterflies grew bigger, Xie Mian discovered something even more terrifying - all of these butterflies had human faces.
Some of these faces were familiar to him, while others were not.
But without exception, they are all students attending classes in this classroom today.
"Human-faced butterfly..."
Xie Mian couldn't help but mutter to himself.
Under the constant impact of the human-faced butterfly, the door panel seemed to be cracking.
In the corridor, the fishy smell became stronger and stronger.
Xie Mian did not linger any longer and turned to join the fleeing crowd.
Crowding, pushing, screaming, falling.
Everyone was running forward desperately.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
Accompanied by a huge bouncing sound.
Black lines appeared at one end of the corridor.
They seemed to have consciousness, extending forward madly.
Some students who ran slowly had their ankles caught by the coils and were quickly dragged away.
"Ahhh, it's him, the classmate in our dormitory who always occupies the toilet without taking a shit, he's caught up with me!"
A boy shouted in the crowd.
He ran while wiping the snot and tears from his face.
"It's so disgusting, so disgusting, I'd rather die than be caught by him!"
Behind the black line, a pool of fishy yellow liquid flowed down from the corner of the stairs.
Behind the fishy yellow liquid is a huge, foul-smelling black...dung ball.
The dung ball bounced and made a loud noise.
Every time it bounced, a pool of fishy yellow liquid was squeezed out of its body.
“…Looks like a dung beetle.”
"Dung beetle rolling dung ball!"
The dung ball that kept approaching reminded Xie Mian of the movie "Insect World" he had watched before.
He held his breath, twisted his body to avoid the attack of the black line, and swung the carbon pen in his hand, nailing the black line to the wall.
The black thread nailed to the wall was still twisting and wriggling.
Xie Mian turned the pen tip embedded in the wall and leaned over to observe——
Only when I got closer did I realize that these black lines were actually black hairs!
Butterflies with human faces, dung beetles with hair... these mutated students all retain human characteristics.
"Is it a coincidence?"
Xie Mian looked around. The dung balls were getting closer and closer, and the squeezed dung water was almost flowing to his feet.
Xie Mian suppressed his nausea and took a step back.
"This isn't a solution. There are too many people here, and we can't get away."
This teaching building is the largest on campus. It is seven stories high and has 96 classrooms of various sizes, accommodating over 8,000 students.
He is currently on the sixth floor, and the further down he goes, the more people there are.
Moreover, the dung ball chased the students down from the seventh floor, and the human-faced butterfly appeared on the sixth floor. There is no guarantee that there are no mutated students on other floors.
If there is, the downstairs will be more dangerous than the upstairs because the further you run down, the more monsters will pile up.
After figuring this out, Xie Mian simply climbed over the handrail at the escalator, went up against the flow, and ran towards the seventh floor.
Someone who was alert noticed Xie Mian's behavior and ran to the seventh floor.
There was silence on the seventh floor.
A sickening stench filled the air.
Xie Mian stepped over the sticky, fishy yellow liquid and pushed open the door of an art classroom.
The classrooms were clean and not damaged.
Xie Mian breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed that no one was attending class in this classroom today.
Just as he was about to enter the classroom and lock the door, it was pushed open forcefully by several hands.
"Don't close the door, let us in, we want to go in too!"
It was three men and two women who followed him upstairs.
These people were in a dishevel and panting.
One of the girls covered her arm, which was covered in blood and had obvious bite marks.
"……bite?"
Xie Mian blocked the door with one hand, staring at the girl's wound and asked.
"Yes, Xinxin was bitten by a butterfly, please let me in!"
"Why waste time talking to him? The butterflies are about to chase us. Get out of the way and let us in!"
Among the few people, the tallest boy swung his fist at Xie Mian.
Xie Mian dodged to the side, grabbed the boy's wrist and pressed it against the door panel.
"You can come in, but she can't!"
Xie Mian looked up and pointed at the injured girl.
"Why not? Why not Xinxin?"
"Yeah, if you say you can't let me in, then don't let me in. Why?"
Several people loudly questioned Xie Mian, as if they thought Xie Mian was a nobody, but they were intimidated by his powerful strength and did not dare to step forward.
"She was bitten, so she can't go in."
Xie Mian replied with some impatience.
"Haha, you can't go in if you're bitten. Do you think it's a zombie?"
"We are all classmates, can you please stop being so selfish?"
"Is this school owned by your family? Let us in!"
It's hard to persuade the damned guy with kind words. Seeing that they didn't listen to his advice, Xie Mian stopped trying to stop them and released the boy he was holding.
He had a feeling that those who were bitten would also mutate and turn into monsters.
This art classroom is very large, and is filled with painting tools such as plaster, sculptures, and drawing boards.
The curtains in the classroom were drawn, so the whole room was a little dark.
Xie Mian walked to the back of the classroom, took out his cell phone, and found a chair to sit down.
He wanted to call Lin Heng and ask if he was okay. He was very worried about him.
——The phone cannot be dialed out, there is no signal.
Xie Mian tried again, but still couldn't dial out because there was no signal.
Once, twice, three times, four times, five times...
No signal! No signal! No signal!
Xie Mian's face turned cold.
A layer of frost covered Qingjun's face.
If the incident only happened at school, there would be no way that the cell phone would have no signal.
The absence of signals can only mean one thing: the changes are not limited to the school, the situation outside is even more serious.
He's leaving here...
