Chapter 123 Rock Safety Zone (XI)
An atmosphere of despair spread in the air, and those who were driven out felt like they had lost their parents.
Just then, a car slowly drove up and stopped in the middle of the road.
The car door opened and several people in white coats walked out, with a golden badge on their chests.
"This badge..." Xie Mian narrowed his eyes slightly.
Goose Shifang followed Xie Mian's gaze and frowned after seeing the pattern on the badge clearly. "I remember the group of people chasing you also had this badge pattern. However, judging by the color of the badge, those people were obviously not as high-ranking as these people."
"Do you remember those staff members guarding the safes in the Colosseum? When I saw the insect corpses wriggling on half of their faces, I had a familiar feeling. Now I have the answer."
The leader was a middle-aged man wearing gold-rimmed glasses. He pushed his glasses and said:
"Everyone, we are from the research institute. If you really have nowhere else to go, you can consider joining us. The research institute provides food and accommodation, and pays for insect stones as an extra expense. All you need to do is cooperate with us in some research."
There was a murmur of discussion among the crowd, but more of it was fear.
"Research? What research?" asked a trembling old man.
"Of course it's about the research on insect energy."
The middle-aged man smiled broadly. "We're committed to developing more powerful insect-powered weapons, and we need a large amount of experimental data. All you need to do is provide some physical data and cooperate with us in some simple tests, and you'll have a stable life."
“No…don’t go!”
In the crowd, a middle-aged man who once worked in a research institute suddenly roared, his voice full of fear.
"Once you go, you can't come back! They... they'll plant worms in your heads, and then they'll open your stomachs and put worm eggs in them... Ahhhh! Don't trust them!"
Before he finished speaking, one of the researchers raised his hand, and the man immediately fell to the ground, unable to utter another word.
"Everyone, don't believe the rumors." The middle-aged man still kept smiling.
"The Research Institute is the most important place in the Rock Safe Zone. All our research is for the future of humanity. We won't force anyone, but we hope everyone can contribute to the future of humanity."
The driven crowd looked at each other, their eyes full of hesitation and struggle.
"Going to the lab means death, leaving also means death..." The old woman who had just knelt on the ground suddenly collapsed to the ground, muttering to herself, "It's better to die now..."
The old woman suddenly ran out screaming, her body torn apart by the security guards.
Xie Mian watched all this in silence. In the end times, human life was worthless.
E Shifang put his arm around Xie Mian's shoulders and whispered, "Let's go, Mianmian. In this apocalypse, humans are worse than dogs."
Xie Mian withdrew his gaze and followed E Shifang away.
"Let's go to the black market again." Xie Mian said.
He remembered the "special insect stone" mentioned by the mouse. If such an insect stone really existed, it might be able to solve the "black hole" in Goose Shifang's body.
"Go to the black market?" E Shifang raised an eyebrow. "That kind of place is full of mixed people. What's the point of going there?"
"I want to find out more about the 'special insect stone'." Xie Mian explained.
"That kind of thing has an unknown origin, maybe it's a scam." E Shifang shook his head.
"I know, but we have to give it a try." Xie Mian insisted.
Goose Shifang sighed helplessly and said, "Okay, since you want to go, I'll go with you. 'Black market' is 'black market'!"
E Shifang took Xie Mian's hand and walked around until they stopped at the door of a bar.
"What are you doing here?" Xie Mian asked in confusion.
"Hey, isn't this the black market?"
The bar's sign clearly read "Black Market".
E Shifang handed over two insect stones and walked in with Xie Mian.
The lights in the bar were dim, and the deafening sound of music filled the entire space. On the dance floor, men and women twisted their bodies, releasing their suppressed emotions.
E Shifang pulled Xie Mian to the bar and ordered two drinks.
"Minmin, let's dance." E Shifang suddenly said.
Xie Mian was stunned for a moment. He had never danced in a bar before.
"Don't be shy, relax a little." E Shifang pulled Xie Mian into the dance floor without saying anything.
Amidst the deafening music, E Shifang hugged Xie Mian's waist and swayed to the rhythm. Xie Mian felt a little uncomfortable, but gradually he relaxed and followed E Shifang's rhythm.
"Mianmian, I really want to keep dancing with you like this..."
After dancing for a while, E Shifang pulled Xie Mian out of the bar.
"Okay, can we go to the black market next?" Xie Mian asked.
"Let's go to the movies." said E Shifang.
"Watching a movie? There are still movie theaters now?"
"Of course there is." E Shifang said with a smile, "There is no doomsday for the upper class, and there is no heaven for the lower class."
E Shifang brought Xie Mian to a movie theater. There were not many people in the theater, and an old romance movie was being shown.
After watching the movie, E Shifang took Xie Mian to another place.
"Mianmian, let's get married." E Shifang suddenly said.
Xie Mian was stunned. He didn't expect E Shifang to suddenly propose marriage.
"Get married?" Xie Mian was a little overwhelmed. "Now... can we still get married now?"
"Of course." E Shifang said with a smile, "As long as we want, we can."
E Shifang dragged Xie Mian to the marriage registration office.
Xie Mian was a little surprised that there would still be a marriage registration office in the apocalypse.
The two walked in together, took photos, and received a red marriage certificate.
On the marriage certificate, both of them were smiling.
"Shifang, I feel like you are quite familiar with this base."
"Really? Hahaha, didn't we just go out together a few days ago? Of course we're familiar with each other..."
