Xu Xuening looked at Li Duofen and smiled without saying anything.
Li Duofen was still confused. She didn't understand what the little girl in front of her was laughing at, but she wouldn't dare underestimate her. After all, they were the first group to arrive in Huacheng, and even those who could be considered to have escaped Huacheng. Xu Xuening must know more than she did.
Thinking of this, Li Duofen nodded, held Xu's mother's hand and said, "Sister Xu, wait until my old man and son come back, and I will come to find you, okay?"
Xu's mother nodded. "Then I'll go find Old Duan first."
After seeing Xu's mother off, Li Duofen immediately became flustered. She couldn't sit still for a moment and immediately stood up with her grandson in her arms to discuss the matter with the old man.
Xu's mother and Xu Xuening continued to walk towards the next house. There were three families they wanted to visit in total. After Xu's mother notified all the relatives, only these three families followed them.
The second family, Old Duan, was a single old man who had worked in many businesses in his early years, but he had a bad temper and was too blunt, which offended many people. His wife died young, and his son, unable to tolerate Old Duan's temper, left home to explore the world when he was young and never returned.
After hearing what Xu's mother was planning, Old Duan, who opened the door, looked at Xu Xuening.
Xu Xuening looked at Old Duan's emaciated figure. His brownish-yellow skin resembled a withered tree, and deep wrinkles marked his weathered face. His hands were covered in age spots, as was his neck. But Old Duan's eyes were like those of a wolf prowling in a winter forest.
The two of them looked at each other, staring at each other and guessing about each other.
Finally, Old Duan pulled a cigarette from his pocket. It was his last remaining possession. When he arrived in Huacheng, while others were selling food to buy medicine, he had stockpiled several boxes of cigarettes for himself. He might not have had food, but cigarettes were his spiritual nourishment.
Old Duan took a puff in silence and nodded. "I'll go with you."
Xu's mother was not surprised by Lao Duan's decision. Lao Duan was not a person who liked a peaceful life, or rather, he had never lived a peaceful life at all.
A lifetime of unhappiness in life has taught him to go with the flow and to quickly accept change and instability.
Old Duan raised his head, and his eyes seemed to look brighter, as if little stars were slowly rising in his eyes.
"What's it like outside?"
"It's very chaotic, with zombies everywhere." Xu Xuening told the truth without hiding anything.
"So what are you going to do?" Lao Duan asked her.
"Find a piece of land, clear out the zombies, and improve ourselves." Xu Xuening stated the temporary plan.
"That's great. At least I don't have to deal with this horrible weather, and I can't even see the sun rise." Lao Duan found another suitable reason for himself to go out.
After saying goodbye to Old Duan, the Xu family mother and daughter came to the last house.
"Xiaoning, Ah Hai may not go with us." Before going in, Xu's mother said hesitantly.
"Mom?" Xu Xuening looked at her mother in confusion.
"You don't know, Ah Hai's mother and Ah Hai's children are all dead." Xu's mother said
"Aunt Ahai passed away? When?" Xu Xuening asked.
Mother Xu's face turned a little ugly. "It happened after we came here. Your Aunt Ahai was murdered when she went out to look for a job. Now, Ahai is looking for the murderer every day. It's hard for him to leave with us."
"Let's go in first." Hearing this, Xu Xuening nodded.
Entering Ah Hai's room, a foul smell wafted out. A thick layer of dust covered the windows, blocking out the sunlight. Inside, all sorts of garbage and daily necessities were scattered haphazardly. The decadent Ah Hai had messy hair, a green stubble, and his eyes were filled with a hopeless gray.
"Ah Hai, what are you doing..." Seeing Ah Hai like this, Xu's mother felt a little heartbroken. Ah Hai was also raised by her. This child is so depressed now, and Xu's mother feels very uncomfortable. However, when she thinks of Ah Hai's mother and his twin girls, she sighs. It's so difficult. Anyone who encounters this situation will feel uncomfortable.
"Auntie, you're here. Sit down." Ah Hai looked at Xu's mother, quickly opened the door, and moved everything on the sofa to the side to make room for the two of them.
"Xiao Ning?" Ah Hai looked at Xu Xuening, a little surprised, "You... are back."
"Brother Ahai." Xu Xuening nodded.
"Ah Hai, you can't be like this. At least find a decent job first. Look at your life..." Mother Xu looked at A Hai worriedly.
Ah Hai forced a smile, but it looked uglier than crying. "Auntie, please don't worry about me. This is my life. I don't know how long I can live."
"Ahai..."
"Brother Ahai, are you sad?" Xu Xuening interrupted her mother and looked directly at Ahai.
"You kid." When Xu's mother heard her daughter asking Ah Hai this, her heart tightened. Isn't this nonsense? Ah Hai, that kid, encountered such a big thing, how could he not be sad.
"Do you think being so sad is useful? Can it avenge your mother and your two children?" Xu Xuening continued to ask.
"Shut up!" Ah Hai, who was hit in the sore spot, couldn't help but yell back at Xu Xuening.
"If you think being sad like this is useful, then keep going. If you really want revenge, come find me tomorrow. You don't need to come after tomorrow."
After Xu Xuening finished speaking, she pulled her mother away without waiting for Ah Hai's answer.
