Chapter 76 Flowers

Xu Xuening had always believed that she could do anything to survive. She believed so and acted accordingly.

However, when she left Lincheng with Xie Yan, Wei Zizhou and others that day, she realized that that day was her rebirth.

Because many places on the road were blocked or damaged by humans, they had to stop and go along the way.

"I really want a tank to drive past, so that I can have unimpeded travel! Hahaha!" Han Xiaoxiao held her chin with both hands, looking at the scenery outside the window, and fantasized.

"Hmph, a tank! I think it would be more appropriate for you to ride a turtle!" Yu Fei looked at Han Xiaoxiao and joked without any hesitation.

"Bah, what a turtle! I think you are the turtle riding a crab!" Han Xiaoxiao retorted to Yu Fei without any hesitation.

The two of them were arguing so loudly on the road that they hardly stopped for a moment.

Compared to the two of them, the people behind Xie Yan had already formed pairs of three or four and started playing mahjong and drawing cards.

"This national quintessence will probably never be forgotten no matter where we go. To be honest, when did mahjong become popular?" Chen Sheng looked at the people next to him with emotion. If it weren't for the mini mahjong provided by Xie Yan, they might have to listen to the childish quarrel between Yu Fei and Han Xiaoxiao along the way.

Who would like to listen to these two elementary school students quarreling? They are not two or three-year-old children.

"Ming Dynasty." Wei Zizhou looked at the mahjong that the people behind him were playing and looked at Chen Sheng in surprise. "Wasn't that your favorite game in the past? Why don't you go play it?"

"It's so boring if I don't win any money!" Mr. Chen shook his head. "I don't really enjoy playing it, I'm just envious. I always think people who can play this must be smart."

Wei Zizhou looked at Chen Sheng. Even Xie Yan didn't know when he put down the book in his hand. He looked at Chen Sheng and continued, "There were actually several people in our village who were admitted to university, but only one of them finally completed university. In fact, if they had money, they should all have graduated. But everyone in the village was poor back then. Even if the whole village had money, it might not have been able to support one child to go to university, let alone those three."

"Then what about those three people in your village?" Xu Xuening looked at him curiously.

Mr. Chen shook his head. "Those people were unwilling to accept it at the time, but we're all relatives after all. Your child needs to go to school, and so does his. Who can we borrow the money from? Even if we borrowed, we couldn't raise enough for one child's tuition. So the old village chief said, 'We'll just have to raise enough money for the children's travel expenses, and leave the rest to fate.'"

"Then what?"

Yu Fei came over curiously.

At some point, Han Xiaoxiao became quiet. She looked at Chen Sheng and then at the book in Xie Yan's hand.

"Then? Then two of them came back. After all, they had no money to go to school." Mr. Chen said helplessly.

"Then how does the remaining one solve the tuition problem?"

"The remaining one comes back every year, bringing back local food and supplies. The old village chief's family also gives him many gifts. Many people say that the child was able to go to school because the village chief gave his family fortune to that man, waiting for him to come back and marry the village chief's daughter!"

Speaking of this, Mr. Chen recalled the past of his hometown and laughed.

"Really? The village chief gave it to him secretly?"

Han Xiaoxiao looked at Chen Sheng with starry eyes, but saw Chen Sheng shook his head.

"No, how could that be possible? If the village chief was that rich, he would have taken care of his daughter long ago. The year after that college student went to school, the village chief's daughter fell ill and was hospitalized. She died there within a month. I heard it was a tumor. Anyway, it was just a lump in her stomach. Everyone in the village said it was a stillbirth. Humph, those people, they have nothing to do but gossip all day long."

Mr. Chen thought of the village chief's daughter and unconsciously changed the subject.

The few people who were anxious to know how the college student went to school were a little anxious.

Mr. Chen looked at the others and finally remembered to continue. "When that college student graduated, I happened to be going out to work, so I chatted with him for a while. He said that after he went to college, he realized that no one in the village could afford to go to college. He had planned to take the train back, but a thief stole his money. So he stayed overnight under the overpass. It was there that he saw a lot of people gathered together playing cards and mahjong. It was the first time he learned that the winner of the game could get money. That's how he started making money."

"Is it easy to play mahjong under the overpass?" Han Xiaoxiao looked at Yu Fei.

Yu Fei's face froze. Of course he knew where it was. It was an area his colleagues were in charge of. They usually looked after each other, turning a blind eye. But when they came to inspect it, it was spotless, a truly green cityscape. But for entertainment, there were some small stalls there during the day.

However, as far as he knew, these cards were not big. It was definitely not the kind of gambling that would bankrupt everyone in a few days.

"It seems that the person you are talking about is indeed smart." It is not an easy task to quickly win money for schooling, and to win it from a bunch of old hands.

"Yeah, so I still think that people who really know how to play mahjong have good brains." When Mr. Chen thought of the big brother from the same village, he couldn't help but think of how he almost lost all his pants playing mahjong in his early years.

"So, it's okay to play mahjong, a national quintessence, but it's definitely not good once it involves gambling." Yu Fei coughed twice and made a summary.
