Jiang Li guessed that these two screens would be used to display the auction items placed below.
Jiang Li walked forward and saw a door. There was no one guarding it. Jiang Li tried to open the door and found that it opened very easily. What he saw was a long corridor.
There were many room doors on both sides of the corridor. Jiang Li approached one of the room doors, listened to the door, but there was no sound inside, so he went in.
Aren't the doors locked here? How did we get in so easily? Or are they just too trusting of this place?
Jiang Li entered the room, where there was a cabinet, a table, and a cage in the middle, which was empty and its purpose was unknown.
After searching the room and finding no useful information, Jiang Li was about to leave when she heard a noise outside. She quickly hid inside the closet and peeked out through the crack in the closet door.
A moment later, three waiters came in with a boy.
The little boy had his head down and his face turned to the side, his hair obscuring his face so Jiang Li couldn't see it clearly. However, judging from their conversation, this little boy should be the last item to be auctioned tonight.
"Keep a close eye on him, he's the main attraction today."
One of the waiters said to the other two, "This must be their leader."
"Okay, don't worry, when have we ever made a mistake?"
"Okay, I'll be going now. You guys keep a close eye on things."
"Okay, go ahead, go ahead."
After the leader left, the other two locked the boy in a cage.
The boy seemed resigned to his fate and walked into the cage without any thought of resistance.
"Sigh, you know, the foreman is really something. What problems could possibly arise? I haven't seen anyone cause trouble in all this time."
One of the waiters said to the other.
"You're right, it just so happens that it's our turn to be on duty today, otherwise we could have seen the auction too."
Another person said the same thing.
"Shall we go take a look?"
"That's not a good idea, we still have to keep an eye on him."
"Oh dear, what could possibly happen? He's handcuffed. We'll lock the outside too, so he can't get out. Don't worry, by the time we get him out, it'll be the last chance, and he won't be able to see anything."
"Okay, then lock it up. We'll go out and check for a while, and we'll be back when it's almost time."
The two locked the cage door, then went outside and locked the outer door as well, before sneaking off to the auction venue.
After confirming that both of them had left, Jiang Li came out of the cabinet.
The boy looked up when he heard the sound, and he was surprised to find someone hiding there.
Jiang Li was afraid the little boy would shout, so she quickly made a shushing gesture to him, indicating that he shouldn't shout.
Jiang Li was already prepared to make a move. If he shouted, she would knock him unconscious and run away immediately. Fortunately, the little boy understood her meaning and did not shout.
She simply asked Jiang Li in a soft voice.
"Who are you? How did you get here?"
Jiang Li then took a closer look at the little boy. The little boy was very thin, obviously because he hadn't eaten enough for a long time, but he was indeed very good-looking, just as they had said. His features were still very immature, but if he grew up, his looks would definitely be comparable to some of the celebrities on TV.
Jiang Li didn't answer the little boy's question but asked him instead.
"Were you captured by them? Do you want to get out?"
"What's the use of thinking about it? We still can't escape."
The little boy also wanted to escape, but he had tried many times and was always caught and brought back.
"Just tell me if you want to or not, what if I have a way?"
Jiang Li looked at the little boy and said, "He's so small, I don't even know if he's an adult yet. The people outside are worse than animals."
Looking at Jiang Li's serious eyes, the little boy wondered if she could really take him out since she had managed to appear here undetected. He thought he should try again; what if he succeeded? At worst, he would just fail and get caught and beaten again.
The little boy had figured it out and looked into Jiang Li's eyes earnestly.
"think."
"Okay, then answer a few questions for me first."
During the conversation with the little boy, I learned that his name was Xiao Cong. He grew up with his grandparents. Before the apocalypse, his grandparents were supposed to die, and he eventually came to the base.
He could have made a living on his own by sometimes finding temporary work at the base.
One night, I was walking home a little late when I was knocked unconscious from behind as I passed through an alley. When I woke up, I found myself here.
At that time, he was being held in another place, right next to the auction house, where there were many other people like him who had been arrested, both men and women.
They beat them when they don't obey, until they behave. Many eventually give in, at least they can eat their fill and survive after giving in, and some lucky ones can even leave this place.
He tried to escape several times, but was caught each time. Eventually, he gave up and accepted reality. Little did he know that after he made up his mind, he would meet Jiang Li, who brought him hope.
Although Jiang Li was captured in his previous life, he was fortunate enough to escape, so he did not experience these things. He originally thought that since he killed Chen Dashun, these things would not happen.
It seems that Chen Dashun is just a small fry, and there are others behind him.
Jiang Li didn't know when this auction house was established, when it existed, or how many people it had harmed in the process.
Chen Dashun alone has already killed so many people, let alone the entire Starlight Auction House.
Jiang Li pretended to take out his lock-picking tools from behind his back, handed them to Xiao Cong, and told him the lock-picking techniques. He then opened the locks on Xiao Cong's hands and the cage, and asked him to try to pick the locks himself. It would be best if he could learn them.
He made a promise with Xiao Cong that if he heard any noise but she hadn't come over yet, he would run out according to the route he had given her. However, whether he could get out of there would be up to him.
Then, after asking about the locations of the other people who were imprisoned, he returned to the auction house.
The auction was about to begin, and Jiang Li had to go back, lest he be discovered if he didn't return soon.
Jiang Li opened the door a crack, made sure no one was outside, and quickly walked out.
Not long after Jiang Li stepped out of the gate, when he was almost at the edge of the venue, someone called out to him from behind.
"Who are you, and what are you doing here? The auction is about to begin; this is not a place for guests."
Jiang Li turned around and found a waiter.
"Oh, I came with other people. I need to use the restroom, but I can't find it. Do you know where the restroom is?"
The waiters assumed Jiang Li was that customer's kept canary. Sometimes customers would indeed bring others along, and they were used to it.
"The toilet is over there. Okay, hurry back and don't wander off."
The waiter pointed in a direction to Jiang Li.
"Okay, thank you."
Jiang Li gripped the knife in his sleeve and replied nervously, it seemed that he was not suspected for the time being.
