Chapter Twenty-Nine: Entering the Base

There were already cars lined up in front of the base gate, they must have all come from other places. The two cars that were next to Jiang Li earlier were among them. Jiang Li slowly drove his car forward and then joined the last car in the line.

The convoy moved quickly, and it was soon Jiang Li's turn. Captain Wang, whom he had seen earlier, was standing at the entrance, with two staff members beside him. Captain Wang was probably there to maintain order and prevent anyone from causing trouble. Registration was usually done by staff members. Jiang Li stopped the car and opened the window.

"What's your name? Do you have an ID card or something that can prove your identity?"

Jiang Li handed his pre-prepared ID card to the staff member. The staff member took the ID card, glanced at it, and after confirming that it belonged to him, handed it to another staff member who was registering the information.

The information was registered quickly, and the staff returned Jiang Li's ID card.

"Everyone has to pay 10 jin of grain when entering the base. After entering, a new base card will be issued, and you won't need to pay grain again when entering and leaving. You can ask for details when you get inside."

Just like in his previous life, Jiang Li opened his backpack, took out a 10-pound bag of flour, and handed it to the other person.

After the staff took the car, weighed it, confirmed its weight, and handed Jiang Li a number plate and a booklet. They told him to drive in, turn right, and there would be a parking lot there.

"Okay, thank you." After thanking the other party, Jiang Li drove inside.

The interior was not as familiar to Jiang Li. Although it was roughly the same as in his previous life, many parts had been changed, and overall it looked much more solid than in his previous life.

Jiang Li didn't know why so much had changed in this life. Were there other reborn individuals besides her? But things had already changed a lot before, so it was probably a chain reaction caused by her own rebirth and the changes she had made.

Jiang Li drove forward and turned right. Sure enough, there was a parking lot. The parking lot must have been there before, as each parking space had a canopy.

Because the site was previously a tourist attraction, it already had many buildings, most of which were preserved for continued use, and the vacant land was put to good use.

The parking lot is huge, estimated to be able to accommodate tens of thousands of cars, but it's only less than half full right now, with many spaces still empty.

After finding a parking space and parking the car, Jiang Li did not get out of the car immediately, but instead opened the booklet that had been given to him earlier.

The booklet was only a few thin pages long, with a rough outline of the base and a few official locations printed on it. Next were a few points of attention to be noted at the base, which were the same as those in my previous life.

After reading everything, Jiang Li got off the car with her bag on her back. The service center was located opposite the parking lot; it was converted from the previous ticket hall.

The interior retains the pre-apocalyptic decor, and the entire hall is clean and bright. There are three windows where you can apply for new ID cards, also known as base cards. There are quite a few people at the windows, and it's rather noisy.

Besides the window for processing base cards, there are other windows for finding jobs, completing tasks, and so on. In the middle, a large screen displays the points that can be exchanged for various resources.

There were many people, and it took a while for Jiang Li to get her turn. She handed her number and ID card to the staff member, who was a woman in her thirties.

The staff took the number plate and ID card, entered the information into the computer, scanned Jiang Li's face, and handed over the ID card and new base card to Jiang Li after confirming that the information was correct.

"The base card uses facial recognition and can only be used by the registered user. Do you want to accumulate points? The points redemption information is displayed on the wall. You can use points for accommodation and shopping at the base."

The more points you have, the more food you can redeem.

The staff, seeing that Jiang Li was a woman, assumed she didn't have enough food to exchange for points, so their attitude was indifferent.

Jiang Li reached into her bag and quickly handed a small bag of snacks to the other person.

"Sister, I'm new here, could you tell me more about it?"

When Jiang Li handed it to her, the woman quickly took the item and put it in the drawer. Her attitude immediately changed, and she smiled at Jiang Li.

"I'd like to ask how many points are needed to rent a house?" I already checked the points redemption process, but I don't know how many points are needed to rent a house.

In my previous life, I lived in a dormitory. Later, I only moved to a slightly better place. All I wanted to do was eat my fill. I didn't have enough points to use, so I didn't bother to learn about these things.

Besides, many things have changed in this life, and Jiang Li is not sure exactly how many points he needs.

"It depends on what kind of place you want to rent. A dormitory costs 10 points a month, while a better one costs 20 or 30 points a month and there will be fewer people. A single room is more expensive, costing 60 points a month. There are also suites for rent, with different prices for small and large suites. Suites are generally more expensive."

Many people live in dormitories and single rooms because they require fewer points. It's not that no one lives in suites, but suites require more points, so fewer people rent them.

Of course, there are also houses with courtyards. The courtyard houses have more points, and usually several people rent them together, otherwise it would be a waste for one person, so I didn't tell Jiang Li.

"I'd like to rent a small suite, preferably on a high floor, and somewhere with fewer people around."

Jiang Li definitely wouldn't go to the dormitory. There are too many people in the single room, and you have to go to the public toilet outside to use it. You also have to go outside to take a shower, which is very inconvenient. The small suite is more private.

When the woman heard Jiang Li say this, she took out a tablet from under the table and handed it to Jiang Li.

“These locations all have small suites built, which should meet your requirements. There are two households per floor, and the highest floor is six floors. There is no elevator, only stairs. The green ones are not yet occupied, and the red ones are already occupied. You can take a look. If you like any of them, I can have someone take you to see them.”

The tablet screen is similar to the way you choose seats in a movie theater, but it's more detailed and clearer.

Jiang Li chose a building that was relatively close to the outer perimeter. That building was basically uninhabited, with only one or two households, not to mention the 6th floor.

"This building is closer to the outskirts, so there are fewer people living here, and the price will be cheaper. Other small suites cost 150 points, but this one only costs 130 points a month. Utilities are charged separately. If you like it, I'll have someone come and show you the room."

"Okay, then I'll go take a look at the house first." Jiang Li handed the tablet back to the other person.

"Wait for me a moment, I'll go get someone." The woman took the tablet, placed it on the table, and then walked to a door at the back of the office. A man followed her out shortly after.

"He will take you to see the apartment. Once you've decided, come back to pay the rent. The water and electricity will also need to be connected here."

There is a river in the base, and there is a waterfall on the mountain behind it. Although the water level dropped a lot during the extreme heat and the waterfall has dried up, the base has also drilled some wells in different locations, so the water supply is not a problem for the time being.

"OK, thanks"
