Chapter 19 The rain stopped.
The next morning, a piercing scream shattered the silence.
Lu Nange suddenly jumped up from the bed, her heart pounding violently in her chest.
She yanked open the curtains, and the blinding sunlight flooded in like a tidal wave, forcing her to squint.
Outside the window, the wet streets still glistened with moisture.
The torrential rains that had lasted for months have stopped—a full month earlier than expected!
An absurd thought flashed through Lu Nange's mind: Could it be that the male lead and Lu Xici's early appearance in Nancheng changed the original plot and disrupted the original timeline?
Fortunately, I didn't contact Lu Xici casually back then...
"Nan Nan! Wake up! Get up quickly!" Lu Xici's voice was filled with anxiety: "The rain has stopped, but outside are full of man-eating monsters!"
Since transmigrating to this world, Lu Nange has developed the habit of sleeping fully clothed.
She flung open the door and followed Lu Xici quickly toward the living room.
At the windowsill, Chi Yanzhou handed over a pair of binoculars.
Despite having seen countless zombie images in movies and TV shows, Lu Nange still couldn't help but gasp when she saw the real apocalyptic scene.
The zombies were bizarre, their bodies twisted, their eyes grayish-white, and their gaping maws were used to frantically bite the survivors.
Chaos reigned in the stairwell, with piercing screams echoing as zombies chased and gnawed at the panicked people fleeing in terror.
On the water, survivors desperately paddled away, while behind them, zombies chased and devoured them.
Lu Nange thought to herself, [These zombies can swim? No, Lu Nange, that's not the point! The point is, the apocalyptic survival challenge has truly begun!]
Just as Lu Nange put down her binoculars, she saw Chi Yi leading Gu Qi and the others hurriedly walk in.
Wen An almost collapsed in Ji Xian's arms, crying so hard she was breathless. Both of them were covered in bloodstains.
Upon seeing this, Lu Beiye immediately became alert, grabbed the baseball bat that Lu Nange had given him, and stood in front of Lu Nange.
He pointed the baseball bat at Ji Xian and Wen An: "Were you bitten?"
Lu Xici quickly reached out and tried to press down the baseball bat in Lu Beiye's hand, while saying, "Aye, you can't be rude."
However, Lu Beiye had taken some kind of super-strength pill, and Lu Xici tried his best, but couldn't budge the baseball bat at all.
The little guy's face darkened as he stared at Ji Xian and Wen An, repeating the question again, word by word: "Were you bitten?"
The ruthlessness in Lu Beiye's eyes was unlike anything one would expect from someone his age; his cold gaze fell directly on Ji Xian and Wen An.
Ji Xian subconsciously hugged Wen An tighter, feeling a little scared by the gaze. He hesitated for a moment before quickly shaking his head and saying repeatedly, "No, really no. They just pounced on me, and I kicked them away."
Lu Beiye, however, was not about to let them off the hook. He turned his gaze to Wen An and pressed, "And what about this auntie?"
Wen An's eyes were already red and swollen from crying, and upon hearing this, she felt even more aggrieved. She looked up and cried to Ji Xian, "Ah Xian, waaaah, he... he actually called me auntie!"
Lu Nange's expression was indifferent, and her eyes revealed a sense of detachment.
He bent down and picked up Lu Beiye, his voice cold: "You'd better check them carefully. If they've been bitten, they'll turn into those zombies outside."
As soon as he finished speaking, He Zhuo jogged over to Lu Nange's side, his face full of curiosity: "Nannan, how did you know?"
Lu Nange glanced at him indifferently: "Don't you guys watch apocalyptic TV shows, movies, or read novels? Forget it, take your binoculars and look outside. Anyone bitten by a zombie will turn into a zombie in a while, their eyes will turn into a murky gray, and they'll be chasing people with their mouths open."
Gu Qi and Lu Xici walked quickly to the cabinet, picked up the binoculars, and looked out the window.
In the stairwell, the bitten person struggled in pain and stood up again, just as Lu Nange had said, turning into a zombie.
He Zhuo was so anxious between Gu Qi and Lu Xici that he kept stamping his feet: "Have you finished reading? Let me see it now!"
"Bang bang bang!"
"Boss, we're the residents downstairs, please help us! We're begging you!"
"Bang bang bang!"
A series of urgent knocks on the door were accompanied by cries for help.
Ji Xian was standing near the gate with Wen An in his arms when he heard the noise, and he subconsciously moved deeper into the room.
Chi Yi reached out and blocked the two of them. Ji Xian asked, "Brother Chi Yi, what's this...?"
Chi Yi said calmly, "Young Master Ji, I'm sorry, you heard what Miss Lu said. We can't be sure if you've been bitten. Your safety is our top priority. Please do not approach any further."
Chi Yanzhou: "Chi Yi."
Chi Yi nodded slightly and took a few steps back.
"Thank you, Brother Yan." Ji Xian put his arm around Wen An and walked to the stool by the dining table.
Outside, the knocking on the door grew more urgent, one knock after another, making the atmosphere inside increasingly oppressive.
Gu Wan subconsciously tightened her grip on Gu Qi's sleeve and asked softly, "Brother, are we really not going to save them?"
Lu Beiye put his arm around Lu Nange's neck and then whispered in her ear.
Speaking in a low, urgent voice that only the two of them could hear, she said urgently, "Sister, we have to go! It's too noisy outside, and then it'll be surrounded by zombies, and we'll be in even more danger."
Lu Nange patted his head to indicate that she understood.
Just then, the knocking outside suddenly changed into a series of heart-wrenching screams.
A chill crept up my spine.
There were many people inside, so Lu Nange put Lu Beiye into Lu Xici's arms.
She planned to go to the kitchen to find a cleaver, recalling the zombies she had seen through the binoculars, and thought to herself that the cleaver was still a bit too short.
She turned and ran back to her room, taking out the two Tang swords she had received as a sign-in reward from her system inventory.
Chi Yanzhou, who had been standing in the corridor at some point, reached out and stopped her: "I'll go."
Lu Xici: "Nannan, you and Aye stay put, let's go out and take a look."
He Zhuo chimed in, "That's right, Nan Nan, your brothers are all here, how can we let you two kids take action?"
Gu Wan grabbed Lu Nange and Lu Beiye, one in each hand, and said, "Let's wait here."
Lu Nange sighed inwardly: [This zombie-slaying hurdle is something I'll have to overcome sooner or later. I was hoping to practice today, but it seems this is just the beginning. The original protagonist and the others haven't truly realized yet—in the apocalypse, relying on others for protection is the most dangerous thing; only by constantly becoming stronger can you survive. Oh well, let them get used to the apocalypse first. Too bad, A-Ye and I will have to wait until next time!]
"Here you go." She handed over the Tang sword: "Remember, you absolutely mustn't get bitten!"
Chi Yanzhou and Lu Xici each took the weapon.
It's not that Lu Nange is biased; one is her older brother who protected the original owner since childhood, and the other is the destined male protagonist of this world, so naturally, she should prioritize arming him.
He Zhuo was holding Lu Beiye's baseball bat in his hand.
Gu Qi was holding a kitchen knife, while Chi Yi was holding a fruit knife.
...
As soon as the door to the stairwell opened, the zombies, who had been frantically devouring their prey, all looked up.
A low, hissing growl escaped its throat.
He Zhuo gripped the baseball bat, staring at the zombies at the door, his stomach churning so badly he almost vomited.
What came into view was a mutilated face, twisted limbs, and even exposed large intestine and spleen...
The most chilling thing is that they were still chewing on bloody chunks of meat.
Chi Yanzhou and Lu Xici brandished their Tang swords, which were so sharp that they severed the zombies' limbs.
But it continued to crawl on the ground.
He Zhuo suppressed the discomfort in his stomach, veins bulging on his forehead.
He swung his baseball bat and followed behind the four, delivering a vicious blow to the zombie on the ground.
With a muffled "plop," the zombie's brains splattered out, the red and white liquid splashing onto the ground.
He Zhuo was pleasantly surprised to find that the zombies had finally stopped moving.
Ignoring his nausea, he yelled at the other four men at the top of his lungs, "Cut off their heads! Cut off their heads!"
Upon hearing this, the four men swung their weapons even more frantically, all aiming for the zombie's head.
A dozen or so zombies had gathered in the stairwell, and the floor was covered in thick blood.
The nauseating stench emanating from the zombies permeated the entire corridor, making it almost suffocating.
