157. Chapter 157 Third Floor

After the tour, Jiang Mi felt a little bored.

The area of this layer is very large, but she estimated that the actual amount of clean soil converted is less than ten kilograms. This is obtained by the non-stop purification of the entire base day and night. That little bit of pure soil is carefully placed in a separate laboratory and contained in transparent glass for easy observation at any time.

There were only three glass boxes, each half an arm's length and one palm's height. The soil was soft and a little green could be seen on the surface. It was said that vegetables were planted there. Jiang Mi didn't ask much about it. He just took a look and left with some disappointment.

I didn't even think of looking closer.

But in general, Jin Lei's general direction is correct. He is not just about plundering. He knows how to develop sustainable development, has plans, means and abilities, and is a relatively qualified manager.

Wenyu then introduced each floor to her, almost in detail, until the third floor, when Wenyu paused for a moment.

"What's wrong?" Jiang Mi noticed it and turned his head to look at her. The elevator door happened to open, revealing a somewhat dim environment behind. A strange smell instantly filled the elevator. Jiang Mi frowned.

Wenyu pursed her lips and whispered after a while: "This is where the women of the base live."

A separate floor for women?

Jiang Mi raised her eyebrows. The special smell she just smelled, combined with Wen Yu's words and behavior at the moment, gave her a vague guess.

"There are very few women in the base, and even fewer awakened ones. In addition, their physical constitutions are relatively weak, so..." Wenyu seemed to be choosing words, "In order to survive and have a stable environment, they all volunteered to exchange for supplies in this way."

Jiang Mi nodded with an indifferent expression.

It is already difficult for women to survive in the apocalypse. If they have the ability, few women would choose to sell their bodies to survive.

She didn't look down on him. It was actually very humane of Jin Lei to set aside a floor specifically for these women. At least he didn't force these women to do this.

Wenyu seemed to be afraid that she might misunderstand, and continued to explain: "These women can make their own choices. The boss also stipulated that they cannot go too far. Moreover, this method is the best protection for these women. Otherwise, the base simply cannot accommodate so many useless people."

"I know, no need to explain." Jiang Mi was feeling a little depressed and didn't want to listen anymore.

Wenyu noticed that she was in a bad mood, so she stopped talking and pressed the elevator button to go down.

The first and second floors are where ordinary base personnel come in and out, but this building is Area A, so only the core personnel of the base can work here. Ordinary base members can come in and out, but are not allowed to go to the second floor or above.

"The building on the left is Area B, and the building on the right is Area C. These are where other ordinary members of the base work and live." Wenyu walked beside her. The two of them stood outside the building in Area A. People passing by would call her Sister Wen when they saw her, but they didn't see any intrigue.

Jiang Mi asked casually, "Where is Area D?"

Wenyu pointed to the back of the building, which originally belonged to the inpatient department.

"There." Wenyu looked at her, "Do you want to go over and take a look?"

Instead of taking her there directly, I asked first. It seems that Area D is different from the previous three buildings.

"What do you do?" Jiang Mi asked as he walked towards it.

The inpatient department looks larger than the main building, but it is not that high, only the sixth floor. There is a large balcony on the top, and when you look up, you can see several solar panels.

"Area D is mainly for research." Wenyu pushed open the heavy glass door and let her in.

"Some of the mutants we captured are held here for research." Wenyu explained and led her to the second floor.

"The basement is full of mutants. The environment is not good, so I won't take you to see it. Let's go upstairs."

The upstairs was cleaned very cleanly, so clean that one could even smell the disinfectant. Jiang Mi felt as if she had returned to the hospital before the end of the world.

But then a roar that was not like that of a human interrupted her thoughts.

Wenyu led the way. The lights in the corridor on the second floor were not on. Only the dim green indicator lights on both sides of the wall were working, making the entire corridor look eerie. The occasional screams made it look like a scene from a horror movie.

"Ms. Jiang shouldn't be afraid, right?" Wenyu suddenly said with a smile.

Without waiting for Jiang Mi to answer, she continued, "When this place was built, I came here once before, and it wasn't so scary. The lights were basically on. Later, more things were imprisoned here, and the power consumption increased. Solar power alone could no longer meet the demand. In order to save electricity, we had to shut down most of the unnecessary power systems."

"Then it became like this. It's actually not that bad during the day, although the corridors are still very dark. But it's the scariest at night. I usually don't like to come here, and I have people bring the mutants I catch here."

Jiang Mi smiled, "Are you afraid of ghosts?"

"Don't be ridiculous, I'm really scared. Even though I've never seen a ghost before and it hasn't hurt me, I still get scared when I think about it." Wenyu laughed and said, "Maybe people are just like this. I never thought that one day I, an ordinary office worker, would be able to kill people without blinking an eye. At the end of the world, the thing I feared most was being harassed by my boss. Now, the thing I fear most is slow death."

"It's too torturous to watch myself turn into a monster day by day, and then count down my life. Sometimes I just want to die."

Her tone was light, but she was analyzing herself in a profound way.

There is no longer the hysteria seen before, and the calmness is heartbreaking.

Jiang Mi listened silently for a long time before replying: "When people are alive, there is always hope. When they die, there is nothing. Times are changing. What if one day everything gets better?"

Wenyu hummed softly and said with emotion: "Yes, I thought so too. I lived in fear day after day with this thought in mind."

The topic became a bit deep, and Jiang Mi felt heavy-hearted, even more so than when he saw the third floor of Area A.

Wenyu did not continue this topic. Perhaps she felt relieved after saying it out loud. Her tone became much more relaxed afterwards. She was not pretending to be relaxed. Instead, she really put her worries aside for the time being. Her words and actions became much more casual.

Until the two of them walked into a laboratory, where a deformed mutant was locked in a huge iron cage. He could still vaguely see a human form, but he was on all fours, his skull had become like a rugby ball, his eyeballs were squeezed out of place, his ribs were protruding and staggered, making his torso look very thin, his whole body was covered with mucus, and his black-green tongue stretched out of his mouth and dragged on the ground.

It's hard to imagine that this is a living person.

"This was one of our former companions." Wen Yu crossed her arms and looked at the mutant with an indifferent expression.

"He was contaminated and became like this after his awakening failed."
