The next day, Ye Lei woke up early. When he finished washing up and went downstairs, Xu Jiao had already prepared a sumptuous breakfast.
"Good morning, Brother Lei!"
Xu Jiao greeted Ye Lei warmly when she saw him come down.
"Good morning!"
Ye Lei waved his hand, sat down at the table, and took a piece of bread to eat.
After taking only a couple of bites, everyone filed down from upstairs, greeted each other, and then the family began their breakfast.
"Xia Yuhe, Bei Anna, have you spoken to your father on the phone?"
This was something Ye Lei had planned in advance.
"I called, but each time they said they were very busy, and the noise was very loud, so they must really be busy."
Xia Yuhe said.
"Me too, Brother Lei, what's up?"
Beanna felt that Ye Lei's sudden question must mean something was wrong.
"Would you like to meet them?"
"think"
The two answered in unison, "In this apocalyptic world, only family ties are truly precious."
"Let's go after we finish eating!"
"Are we going to that military-run shelter?"
"Yes, it's been so long since we've been there. We should go and take a look."
"Brother Lei, you must have some kind of plan, right?"
Beanna has been at the police station for so long; she's much more mature than the school beauty.
"Our policewoman is so smart. I do have some plans."
"Tell me about it!"
Everyone put down their chopsticks and looked at Ye Lei.
"During this trip to the Desheng generator, I discovered that the military was collecting crystal cores in order to awaken more people's superpowers."
"Ah! Wouldn't that be a huge threat to us?"
After spending many days together, everyone knew that Ye Lei was able to protect them and help them survive in the apocalypse because of his special abilities.
"Whether it's a threat or not, we don't know yet, but I need to figure out what the military's purpose is in doing this!"
"Perhaps it's to fight against hostile forces and protect our country. Isn't that the mission of a soldier?"
"I hope so, so I plan to go to the shelter. You can also ask your father about this while you're there, understand?"
"I understand, this is all for our own good."
The two of them spoke with great conviction.
"Okay, now that we've eaten, let's set off!"
"yes"
Xia Yuhe and Bei Anna stood up and went back to their room to pack their gear.
This time, Ye Lei only brought the Bloodthirsty Bats with him; the other zombies were left in the shelter.
He sensed that the shelter was becoming increasingly exposed to the survivors, and that it was fraught with danger. Only by holding the base could he better prepare for any adventure.
After a long and stressful hour-long drive, the stadium, located in the suburbs, finally came into view—it is now a temporary shelter set up by the military.
Looking from a distance, one can clearly see that there are quite a few zombies wandering around the stadium. It is likely that the aura emanating from the surviving humans has attracted zombies from further away.
As the vehicle got closer to its destination, zombie remains began to appear frequently along the roadside.
The debris piled up, gradually forming small hills that emitted a strong stench of decay.
The pieces of broken flesh were severely rotten, with yellowish-green liquid constantly flowing out, emitting a suffocating stench.
In this sweltering heat, a yellow mist appeared and disappeared, like a mysterious and terrifying veil shrouding the surroundings.
At the same time, an extremely pungent and unbearable stench spread through the air like a plague.
No matter how tightly the car windows are closed, or how many times the air conditioner is turned on and switched to recirculation mode, it is impossible to prevent this odor from entering the car.
It's like an invisible demon, sneaking in through the air conditioner's vents and wantonly eroding every inch of space, leaving people nowhere to hide.
Ye Lei frowned slightly, took out three dust masks from his spatial storage, and gave them to Xia Yuhe and Bei Anna. After the air was filtered again, it felt noticeably better.
"Brother Lei, look, there are soldiers ahead."
Bena pointed ahead, where all the military personnel were clearly visible, dressed in white protective suits, with even their heads completely covered.
In such hot weather, I don't know how they managed to get through it. Maybe they had cooling measures inside their clothes to keep them safe and sound in 56°C heat.
When the soldiers saw them coming, they also came over and politely saluted.
Ye Lei had no choice but to stop the car and roll down the window, as a wave of heat rushed in.
"Hello, the shelter is already full and is no longer accepting survivors. Please leave!"
He spoke very politely; he was truly courteous.
"We came to visit relatives and didn't plan to stay here."
"In that case, please get off the bus and register!"
Ye Lei had no choice but to get out of the car and fill in the relevant information in the registration book. The soldiers checked it and only allowed them to enter after confirming that everything was correct.
After parking the car, Ye Lei led Xia Yuhe and Bei Anna into the stadium. As soon as they entered, they were shocked by the scene before them.
The stands were packed with colorful tents of all shapes and sizes, resembling a vibrant ocean of color.
Some of these tents are brightly colored and others are simple and elegant, but without exception, they are all temporary dwellings hastily set up by people to provide shade from the sun.
Some of the survivors stood, some sat, and others lay directly in the stadium, in one of the few shady spots.
After days of suffering from the high temperatures and malnutrition, everyone looked listless and dazed, as if they were walking on the edge of life and death, and might collapse at any moment and never wake up again.
Their eyes were empty and bewildered, devoid of any life, as if their souls had been ripped from their bodies, leaving only empty shells like walking corpses.
The vast football field area in the center of the stadium was now tightly surrounded by layers of incredibly sturdy obstacles, forming an impregnable defensive line.
The enormous generator placed to one side was constantly emitting a deafening roar, as if announcing its powerful power and energy to the outside world.
Without a doubt, hidden within these layers of encirclement must be a crucial core area—the headquarters!
It's easy to imagine that compared to the harsh environment and rudimentary facilities outside, the conditions here must be far superior.
The sign at the entrance reads "Unauthorized personnel are prohibited from entering," clearly indicating to everyone that not just anyone can go in.
Sure enough, just as Ye Lei was about to go in, he was stopped by the soldiers at the door.
"Excuse me, sir, this is the headquarters. Unauthorized personnel are not allowed to enter."
The soldier pointed to the sign next to him and said politely, "However, the cool breeze blowing out from inside indicates that it will be much more comfortable inside."
