"We are having dinner now. Do you two naughty kids still want to eat?" Zhang said.
"Mom, let me eat." Yun Yiyi didn't fight with Third Brother Yun for the food. She sat down next to Zhang.
"Mom, I want to eat too." Brother Yun San hurriedly sat down and picked up his chopsticks to eat.
Tonight, Zhang stir-fried pork liver with pickled peppers, pickled ginger, and dried peppers, and added garlic slices before serving.
Zhang also made a vegetable soup with cabbage and two eggs. The main course was a pancake made by Zhang. It was a thin, large sheet of dough, simply rolled out in the pan, and cooked. When eaten, it was rolled in vegetables, and the aroma of the vegetables and the wheat flavor of the pancake made it incredibly delicious.
However, Zhang didn't make it often. It was mainly because it was too troublesome to make, and the Yun family all had big appetites, so they had to make a large stack every time to feed them. Today, because she had extra time, Zhang made it.
Yun Yiyi wrapped a few chopsticks of stir-fried pork liver in a pancake, put the pancake in her mouth and took a bite. It was fragrant and spicy, and so delicious.
"Mom, your cooking is so delicious." Yun Yiyi said vaguely while eating a piece of bread. She was afraid that Zhang Shi couldn't hear clearly, so she gave her a thumbs up.
"Mom, it's delicious. I love it." Brother Yun San also hurriedly praised.
"Yes, wife. You worked hard cooking today. Well, did you make many pancakes tonight? Can we still eat pancakes tomorrow morning?" Yun the Butcher asked uncertainly.
"Don't worry about eating. I made a basket of cakes this afternoon, enough for tomorrow morning. If you like them, I will make them for you next time." Zhang was very happy to see that everyone liked the food she cooked.
"Mom, you can fry some kimchi tomorrow morning and we can eat it with pancakes." Wow, Third Brother Yun has ordered all the dishes for tomorrow morning.
"Mom, let's make some mung bean soup tomorrow morning."
"Dad, I remember we bought mung beans in the provincial capital, right?" Yun Yiyi looked at Yun the Butcher uncertainly.
"I bought a lot, Yiyi. If you want to drink mung bean soup, ask your mother to get up early tomorrow morning to make it for you." Yun the butcher said readily.
"Mom, tomorrow morning, when you cook the mung bean soup and the mung beans start to boil, pour all the water into a clay pot. Save it for us to drink tomorrow morning. Mung bean water is especially good for cooling down the summer heat."
"Then, continue to add water to the pot to cook mung bean soup." Yun Yiyi said.
"Okay, then I'll put more water in the pot tomorrow and fill two large jars. Let the mung bean water cool down before drinking it. It's so cold, I'm sure you all like it." Zhang said after thinking for a while.
"Wife, tomorrow morning, cook mung bean soup first, then stir-fry some vegetables and eat some pancakes. That will be enough for breakfast. After all, we don't have that much time to cook in the morning." Yun the butcher said with his head tilted.
"Okay, I understand, Boss." Zhang replied.
Yun Yiyi and the others had been busy all afternoon and were hungry, so they ate quickly. After dinner, Zhang had everyone take turns washing themselves. After the children had changed into clean clothes, she sent them off to bed.
Butcher Yun went to give the donkey some grass and water. When he returned, the children were all asleep, and only Zhang was left washing clothes.
"Wife, it's getting dark now. Shall I take out our meat and fish and smoke them overnight?" Yun the butcher said in a low voice.
"Okay, boss, go ahead and do it. I'll help you after I finish washing the clothes."
"good."
Butcher Yun first built a fire, then took down the baskets of meat and fish from the donkey cart and placed them next to the fire.
Then, Yun the butcher pulled a bundle of thicker sticks from the firewood pile. He used the sticks to build a few simple wooden racks above the fire. Once they were set up, he hung the meat and fish on the racks and let the fire smoke them.
"Master, I have washed all the clothes and hung them up. Are you done?" Zhang asked as she sat down by the fire.
"I've already prepared everything, wife. Tomorrow morning I'll take my eldest son to the mountains to fetch water again. We have a lot of water at home, so we must store more."
"Okay, then wake me up early tomorrow morning to cook. It's not easy to cook mung beans until they bloom, and I'm afraid there won't be enough time in the morning." Zhang said worriedly.
"Wife, I'm telling you, wash the mung beans now, pour them into the pot, and add water. Then cook them tomorrow morning, and they'll bloom more easily."
"Boss, you always have more ideas. Why didn't I think of it?" Zhang patted her head and quickly stood up to look for mung beans on the donkey cart.
Zhang worked quickly and decisively. In just a few minutes, she had washed the mung beans and poured them into the pot. Then, she added half a pot of water.
"Wife, go to bed. I'll stay here for a while and then go to bed too."
"Okay, then I'll go to bed first. You should go to bed quickly too." Zhang said with a yawn.
"Don't worry, it won't be late."
Zhang went to sleep on the mat and fell asleep almost as soon as she lay down. She was tired after a busy day.
Butcher Yun waited for more than half an hour, turned all the meat and fish over, added more firewood to the fire, and then went to sleep.
Yun the Butcher lay down for a few minutes and began to snore.
Yun Yiyi waited for a while, making sure everyone was asleep, before she quietly got up.
She walked behind a tree and slipped into the space. She picked some peanuts and put the peanut vines aside. Then, she checked on the vegetables she had planted and found that they had sprouted.
Yun Yiyi looked carefully and felt that the seedlings all looked the same, and she couldn't tell them apart. Forget it, she would wait until the vegetables grew longer.
She picked up the bucket and watered the seedlings. Then, she grabbed a bundle of peanut stalks and slipped out of the space. She placed the peanut stalks in the basket in front of the donkey.
As soon as the little donkey saw Yun Yiyi coming, it stood up. As soon as Yun Yiyi put down the peanut vines, it started eating them with big mouthfuls. Yun Yiyi touched the little donkey's head, and the little donkey nudged Yun Yiyi's hand with its head.
Yun Yiyi smiled happily. She waited for the little donkey to finish eating the peanut vines, then she filled half a small basin of corn kernels from her space space for the little donkey to eat.
She took a moment to check on the smoked fish fire and saw it was nearly gone. She quickly added more wood, and when it was alight, she stood up and touched the meat and fish hanging on the wooden rack. The skin was dry, but there was still moisture inside; it definitely wouldn't hold up well in the long term.
Yun Yiyi waited until the donkey had finished eating the corn kernels and drinking the water. Then, she went to the fire, found a burning stick, and carefully checked the basket and the ground for any peanut stalks or corn kernels that had fallen out. Of course, there were none.
Yun Yiyi placed the still-burning stick back into the fire. She walked behind a tree and slipped into the space. She found that the corn in the space was ready to be broken, so Yun Yiyi turned into a laborer and started breaking the corn.
