Chapter 8 Extreme Cold, Catching the Thief

Shen Zhijie said, "Jiang Yao, please explain this to us."

Jiang Yao didn't speak, but just looked at Xiao Mu.

Xiao Mu stared at Shen Zhijie with cold, silent, and gloomy eyes.

In his charming, deep voice, he said, "What if I said this chicken is our own?"

Shen Zhijie laughed awkwardly, "Auntie, we really brought this chicken ourselves."

"You can't accuse us of stealing chicken just because we ate chicken, right!"

Aunt Zhang shouted, "Everyone in the village knows my chickens were stolen. We're conducting a suspicious investigation right now. How come you all happen to be eating chickens!"

Shen Zhijie said softly, "If you don't believe me, look, all our chickens have these special packaging bags."

Villager 1, somewhat indignant, said, "Aunt Zhang, don't wrongly accuse an innocent person. Let's continue the investigation and we'll find out."

Hearing the noise, Old Zhang hurriedly came out of the kitchen. Seeing the situation, he explained, "This chicken wasn't stolen. They brought it themselves and asked me to make it into poached chicken."

"Don't believe me? Look, there are still these kinds of packaging bags in the kitchen!"

Villager 2: "It's strange today. Why didn't Dazhuang, who usually loves to join in the fun, come?"

Everyone looked at each other, and realized that Dazhuang was indeed missing.

Someone suggested, "Let's go visit Dazhuang's house!"

Aunt Zhang also noticed that Da Zhuang, who usually loves to join in the fun, was the first to appear, but he didn't show up today.

Everyone headed towards Dazhuang's house.

Shen Zhijie glared angrily at Jiang Yao and said, "Jiang Yao, why don't you explain this to us?"

Jiang Yao looked at Xiao Mu as if he were an idiot.

That's all the vision you have...

Jiang Yao turned and left...

Upon arriving at Dazhuang's house, we saw a cold house filled with empty wine bottles and a stove fire that had long since gone out.

Jiang Yao guessed that Da Zhuang was likely in grave danger, so she slipped into the west room when no one was looking, used her spatial ability to collect Da Zhuang's family's grain, leaving only a small portion there.

Someone went to check and found Dazhuang lying on the cold kang (a heated brick bed). It seemed that the temperature had dropped again last night, and Dazhuang hadn't woken up in time to add fuel to the stove, so he had frozen to death.

Before anyone could grieve, someone immediately suggested dividing up the burnable and edible supplies.

The supplies were pitifully small, and each person didn't receive much.

As we walked along, we discovered that many outsiders had somehow come to the village.

When we arrived at Erpang's house in the village, it was a low, dilapidated old house. The house was never sunny and had been neglected for many years, so it was really in a terrible state.

People standing outside can see what's inside the house.

Erpang, the village rascal, wasn't home at the moment; who knows where he'd gone to freeload again.

Zhang San heard early in the morning that all of Aunt Zhang's chickens had been stolen overnight.

He was worried that his pork would also be stolen, so he hadn't gone out.

Seeing everyone approaching, he opened the door and greeted them, "Have you found the thief?"

Villager 1 said, "No, but we found that Dazhuang had frozen to death in his own home."

Villager 2 said, "It must have been caused by drinking too much at night and not getting up to add fuel to the fire when the temperature dropped."

Villager 3 said, "I don't know when a lot of outsiders came to the village."

The village secretary frowned and sighed, saying, "The situation is special now, so please lock your doors and windows at night and try not to visit relatives unnecessarily."

"It's impossible to investigate these people. They won't let us investigate for no reason; we need evidence."

Unfortunately, since no one had found anything suspicious along the way, we had no choice but to leave the matter at that for now.

On her way home, Jiang Yao saw several mischievous children jumping and chattering happily on the ice. The adults who saw them scolded them and chased them home to prevent them from getting frostbite.

Children's world is always full of joy, but how long can that joy last?

Now, the village's supplies have been targeted. Many people saw when everyone bought the supplies. If other villages finish their supplies first, then Shichang Village will definitely be the next target.

If we wait for military rescue, it might not arrive for a while.

Who knows when the military will airdrop supplies?

On her way home, Jiang Yao passed an old house that was now inhabited by people from another village.

What's suspicious is that there's something familiar among the chicken feathers near his child's feet.

Jiang Yao quietly went to Aunt Zhang to get the grain, and told her about her discovery along the way.

Upon hearing this, Aunt Zhang slammed her hand on the table.

Led by Aunt Zhang, they rushed into the house and saw bones on the table. In the corner of the kitchen, there were piles of firewood, dozens of bags of grain, and chickens that had frozen to death.

Aunt Zhang, somewhat incredulously, pulled the chicken apart and saw the mark on its foot. She sat down on the ground and silently shed tears.

In rural areas, people are generally honest and kind, and neighbors get along well. When one family has a problem, everyone helps each other.

However, if someone steals chickens or dogs, they are often looked down upon by the villagers.

Villager 1 exclaimed in surprise, "It really was someone from another village who stole the chicken."

Villager 2: "Pay us money!"

Villager 3: "Call the police and arrest him. Who knows if he'll steal other people's grain again!"

After all, food is everyone's lifeline. If you can steal from Aunt Zhang today, you might steal from yourself tomorrow.

At this moment, Shen Zhijie suddenly rushed out and said, "It's all my fault. If I had brought more food to share with everyone, this wouldn't have happened."

"Jiang Yao, why don't you lend me some grain first, and I'll pay you back later."

Jiang Yao: "I have no food."

"If I had food, I could stay here."

I don't know who brought the village chief here.

Under questioning from the village chief, Liu Chuang confessed.
