Chapter 109: The Unconscious Foreigner
Everyone in the tent looked towards the door. A soldier walked in quickly. He stopped in front of Qin Yu, saluted, and said, "Reporting, while patrolling the base, our team found a foreigner collapsed on the ground. There were several zombie corpses beside him. The person has been taken to the observation tent to be treated by the military doctor."
Foreigners... and zombie corpses around them were such a strange combination. A person suddenly flashed through Su Qing's mind. There were very few foreigners in the base, and the only one she remembered was Daniel. The scene of discovering that he was raising zombies underground to generate electricity left a very deep impression on Su Qing.
Li Yi suddenly stood up and said excitedly, "An unconscious foreigner? Wow, could it be that Daniel? Zombie traces were found in the base before the zombie attack. Could it be him? He's keeping zombies in our base again?"
Very good! It seems Su Qing wasn't the only one who had thought about what happened earlier. After hearing Li Yi's words, she shook her head in denial. "Besides the research base, all the experimental zombies are still alive. If zombies appear anywhere else, they'll immediately sound the alarm. He can't keep them in secret forever."
"Little brother, is that foreigner a tall white man with blond hair and blue eyes?" Li Yi looked at the soldier who reported and asked while gesturing with his hands.
The soldier was stunned by Li Yi's question. He rubbed the back of his head awkwardly. "The man was wearing a raincoat. We moved him to the observation tent and I came here to report to the commander. I... I only noticed that he was quite tall, but nothing else..."
"Let's go over and take a look first." Qin Yu said to everyone, and then signaled the soldiers to lead the way.
The group followed the soldiers for less than two minutes before arriving at an observation tent outside the camp area. The tent was surrounded by a group of soldiers holding guns. Seeing them coming, several people at the door saluted Qin Yu, "Commander."
Then make room for the door on both sides.
Qin Yu saluted in return and walked into the tent first. Su Qing and others followed closely behind him and entered the tent one after another.
As soon as Su Qing entered, he saw a doctor in a white coat and several soldiers with guns surrounding a bed on one side of the tent. A heart rate monitor was placed on the table beside the bed and was beating continuously.
"What's going on?" Qin Yu stepped forward and asked.
The doctors and soldiers turned their heads when they heard the sound. The doctor took a look at the person who suddenly appeared in the tent, then turned his head back and moved his hands. After a few seconds, he put a syringe on the tray, then moved away, exposing the person on the bed to everyone.
Su Qing's sight just glanced at a blond head, and then her vision darkened. Qin Yu, Lu Chen, and Li Yi quickly stood in front of her, blocking the view of the hospital bed.
She was about to ask with a confused look on her face when she heard Li Yi yelling, "Hey, hey, hey! There are female comrades here, can you please pay attention to the impact! Cover it up quickly!"
The military doctor saw the commander and the other man move their bodies and stand in a row instantly after seeing the condition of the bed, then looked at him with cold eyes, and stood there in a daze for a while without moving.
It was Chen Kuo and Qingshan who strode over and together with other soldiers dug out a thin army green blanket to cover the exposed body on the bed.
"I haven't..." He finished the inspection.
Before he could finish his words, several glances fell on his face. The military doctor reacted belatedly and quickly swallowed the rest of his words.
Seeing that the person was wrapped up, the people blocking Su Qing finally dispersed. She stuck her head out and looked at the bed in confusion. The person wrapped in a blanket with only his head exposed was actually Daniel.
Daniel lay on the bed with his face purple and his eyes closed. His breathing was not obvious and he looked like he would die at any time.
"Report the situation." Qin Yu asked in a low voice.
"I... I did a rough check. There are no zombie scratches or bites on his body, but his face is bruised and swollen, and his ribs are broken. These should be caused by violent external attacks. These should not cause coma, but internal injuries cannot be ruled out. It's just that the conditions here are simple, so I just drew blood for testing, and the results will be out in half an hour." The military doctor replied quickly.
Li Yi walked over and stared at Daniel's miserable face again and again, "Who did this guy offend? He was beaten so badly."
Qin Yu asked again: "Where is the zombie corpse that appeared next to him?"
"They're stored in another tent. I've checked on those zombies, and their cause of death is somewhat... unclear."
"The cause of death is unclear?" Su Qing was a little surprised. "The way zombies die is nothing more than a headshot that destroys the central nervous system. What does this unclear mean?"
"Their heads and necks are intact, and there is no scar on their bodies, but they have lost their functions. However, I don't know much about the zombie virus, so I can't easily draw a conclusion." The military doctor explained.
After hearing this, Qin Yu immediately gave an order, "Chen Kuo, you must immediately transport those zombie corpses to the capital and hand them over to Professor Gu."
"yes."
Seeing this, Lu Chen said, "Captain Qin, Su Qing and I will also be going to the capital to deliver the equipment later. Why not let us take it over directly?"
Qin Yu glanced at Lu Chen and nodded, "Okay, let Chen Kuo go with you."
…
Since the siege crisis at the Dawn Base was temporarily resolved and the planes sent from the capital were preparing to return, Su Qing and his team simply flew behind them in a helicopter.
However, as they were approaching the capital base and saw the planes ahead lowering their altitudes one after another in preparation for landing, a voice suddenly came from the radio of the helicopter piloted by Shen Kuo.
"Warning! You are about to enter the capital's controlled airspace. Please stop immediately and report your identity."
"Special Operations Team of the First Military Region of the Capital Group Army, Shen Kuo."
The helicopter circled in the air, waiting for a response. A moment later, another command came over the radio: "Entry permitted. Please land the helicopter at the military airport for inspection."
"receive."
Su Qing looked out the window and saw that military defenses had been set up outside the capital base. Several trenches and other defensive fortifications had been built on the open ground. All the people coming and going were soldiers in military uniforms, and not a single ordinary person was to be seen.
“Martial law has been declared in the capital.”
Lu Chen followed Su Qing's gaze and glanced down. "The zombies have become extremely organized and difficult to deal with. It's only natural to impose martial law."
Su Qing laughed at herself, "Yeah, after all, the Dawn Base is a lesson for us." She just didn't take it seriously and was caught off guard by the zombies.
The helicopter slowly landed on a helipad in the military area. After Chen Kuo stopped the plane, he said, "Stay in your seat and don't move. Someone will come up to check."
As soon as he finished speaking, the cabin door was opened and a team of soldiers armed with live ammunition came up. They carefully checked the information of the people on board and inspected every corner of the plane before signaling them to get off.
Li Yi's father, Li Song, saw them coming down and quickly stepped forward. He looked apologetic and said, "I'm so sorry, Chief Su, Master Lu. We have to go through the procedures during this extraordinary period."
Su chuckled and replied, "I understand. No need to apologize."
Behind him, Shen Kuo, Li Yi, and the soldiers were carrying body bags down from the helicopter. Li Song looked up and asked in confusion, "What are these?"
Lu Chen explained, "We found several zombie corpses with unknown causes of death at the base and brought them here for Professor Gu to see." He then asked, "Where is Professor Gu now?"
"Professor Gu has been staying in our military compound since arriving in the capital. Let Mu Dong take you there."
The group quickly followed Dongzi to Professor Gu's residence, which was a two-story building with its own entrance and courtyard. Dongzi stepped forward and rang the doorbell.
The door opened, and Zeng Li looked at the people outside with great surprise, "Boss, Su Qing, why are you here?"
"Is Uncle Gu here?" Lu Chen asked.
Zeng Li walked over and affectionately took Su Qing's arm and led her to the yard. She replied as they walked, "I'm here, come in."
Su Qing followed Zeng Li in and looked around. The courtyard was not big, with a bare concrete floor. After a few steps, they arrived at the door of the small building.
Zeng Li opened the door and shouted into the house, "Gu Yan, the boss and Chief Su are here, come out quickly."
"Achen?" Gu Yan, who was sitting on the sofa reading a book, heard the voice and stood up. He looked at the people who entered the house one by one and asked, "Did you dig up something?"
Lu Chen glanced at Gu Yan. "Yes, they've all been dug out." He paused, shifted his body, and exposed the soldiers carrying the body bags behind him. "They also brought some things that need Uncle Gu to take a look."
Gu Yan looked at the black bags in confusion.
Seeing that Gu Yan was a little confused, Shen Kuo explained, "We found several zombie corpses with unknown causes of death. We need Professor Gu to check them out."
"Wait a moment, I'll go call my father out." Gu Yan said and turned to go upstairs.
Zeng Li asked everyone to sit down and rest.
The small building was not very big and was simply decorated, with rough white walls and a gray cement floor. Due to the gloomy weather outside, an incandescent lamp was lit on the roof. There was a worn fabric three-seater sofa in the living room, and a square table and a few wooden chairs in another place. There were no other furnishings, and it looked almost devoid of life.
When Su Qing and the others sat down, the space in the room suddenly became a little small.
"Classmate Li, why don't you go home when you are already in the capital? Instead, you are here with Gu Yan?" Li Yi leaned on the armrest of the sofa next to Zeng Li and teased.
Zeng Li rolled her eyes at him and said, "It's none of your business!" She turned around and took Su Qing's arm again, and asked with concern, "How's things going at the base?"
"The personnel are temporarily housed in a temporary camp. Those who want to leave for the capital will be transported here by planes dispatched by the capital. I also plan to move the base near the capital." Su replied softly.
"Ah? Relocating the base is a big project." Zeng Li said in surprise.
"These days, zombies are becoming increasingly difficult to deal with, and with the frequent occurrence of extreme weather, it's difficult for us to survive on our own. Being closer to the capital would also be more convenient."
Zeng Li nodded in agreement, "That's right..."
"Comrade Xiao Su, I wonder how my equipment is doing?"
Professor Gu's voice suddenly came from behind. Su Qing stood up and looked over, and saw Professor Gu hurriedly coming down from the second floor, followed by Gu Yan and his student Zhao Jiajun.
"Professor Gu, the machines have been dug out, but they still need to be inspected by professionals to see if the data inside can still be extracted."
"Oh, okay, Gu Yan said you brought a few zombie corpses and wanted me to see them?" Professor Gu asked again.
Shen Kuo raised his hand to signal the soldiers to bring the bodies over, and the bodies were placed on the ground one by one.
Professor Gu and Zhao Jiajun half-knelt on the ground, opened the body bags and carefully examined the zombies.
A crowd of people gathered around nervously watching the two's actions.
