The next morning at 8:30, Yan Qing finally got up, feeling refreshed. According to the shift schedule, she was on the night shift from 5 am to 5 pm. So, she could get a good rest during the day.
When she woke up, she found that Yue Qi was not in the dormitory. After asking Xiao Tao, she learned that Yue Qi had left at around 7 a.m.
He officially started work today, but unfortunately, their work schedules don't align.
Yan Qing sighed; she would have to face the challenge alone again.
Xiao Tao, on the contrary, began to feel much more at ease. She had long wanted to spend time alone with the older sister. It was so wonderful not to have an annoying older brother.
Yan Qing pinched Xiao Tao's rosy cheeks and smiled, "Why did you wake up so early today? Didn't you want to sleep a little longer?"
"Don't even mention it! Apart from you, big sister, neither my big brother nor I slept well last night," Xiao Tao began to complain. "You have no idea how chaotic it was downstairs last night!"
"Oh?! Is that so?" Anyway, she was wearing sleep earplugs and didn't hear anything at all. It seems these earplugs are of good quality.
Xiao Tao pulled her to the window. "Big sister, look for yourself. Last night, those people were like madmen, tearing each other apart and fighting like their lives depended on it. When I woke up this morning, there were corpses lying all over the floor. It was terrifying."
Yan Qing looked out the window and saw that the small square in front of the dormitory building had been stained dark red with blood. She couldn't help but feel a moment of fear.
"Did they experience a massacre last night?" Otherwise, where would so much blood come from?
"No, big sister, what you're seeing now is the scene after the morning cleaning. When I got up at six o'clock, the ground was covered with corpses, many of them with broken arms and legs, not even a complete body." Xiao Tao said calmly, as if she had never seen anything like it.
Yan Qing gasped. The blood covering the entire square must have come from dozens of people.
"Could it be that all those people downstairs last night are dead?"
Xiao Tao held up two fingers, looking mysterious. "No, no, no! There are still survivors, big sister. Guess how many will survive?"
Yan Qing was quite frightened by Xiao Tao's nonchalant attitude. It seemed that Xiao Tao didn't take matters of life and death seriously at all!
However, given the magnitude of the tragedy this child has experienced, it's understandable that his thoughts might become a bit extreme.
Yan Qing could tell that the child genuinely cared about her. The thought that Xiao Tao would eventually leave her in this instance made her feel a pang of sadness.
However, for the sake of her child's future development, she needed a family member by her side. Yan Qing secretly made up her mind that no matter how difficult it was, she would find Dean Xiao and entrust her child to her.
After all, Dean Xiao was Xiao Tao's only family in this world.
However, the thought of Director Xiao gave her a headache. The experiences of the past two days had confirmed one thing: there was no such person as Director Xiao at Wenshan Sanatorium!
But surely the request from Xiao Zhonglin and his wife couldn't be fake? No parent would willingly leave their only child with a stranger. Parents' hearts are always full of love and concern, and for that reason alone, she chose to believe Xiao Zhonglin and his wife.
After tidying up and washing up, Yan Qing was having breakfast with Xiao Tao when there was a knock on the door.
Upon opening the door, Yan Qing was somewhat surprised to see Mu Yang smiling amiably, and couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.
"So it's Dr. Mu. May I ask what brings you here?"
Mu Yang's gaze, however, fell on Yan Qing, who was blocking the doorway, and his smile deepened slightly.
"What, aren't you going to invite me in for a seat?"
Yan Qing wasn't stupid. This man was clearly a two-faced wolf; he must have something to gain by contacting her. For her, it was bound to be a good thing, so why should she let him in?
So she stood there, her neck choked, not moving an inch, and said, "Dr. Mu, let's get straight to the point."
"Sigh!" Mu Yang sighed. "I never expected Dr. Yan to misunderstand me so much. It seems my good junior brother has been saying a lot of bad things about me." He even deliberately put on a very aggrieved look, but unfortunately, Yan Qing didn't buy it.
"It seems Dr. Mu is alright now, so I'll head back." She made a move to close the door.
"Hey—wait a minute!" Mu Yang stretched out a hand to block the doorway. "I really do have something to discuss with you, but since you won't let me in, let's talk here."
He pulled a duty roster from his pocket. "This is our new duty roster, arranged by Director Xu this morning. Due to some staff changes, the previous roster is no longer valid. Here, take it—"
Yan Qing took the duty roster from his hand and found that there were indeed many unfamiliar names added to it. In particular, in the column for nurses on duty, the names of Xiao Shuo and a few others had been removed, and several names she did not recognize had been added.
Yan Qing pointed to the name of one of the new nurses and asked, "Is this the adventurer who came in yesterday?"
“To correct you, it’s today—they joined this morning.” Mu Yang’s smile deepened. “Dr. Yan, you know I’ve always had the highest hopes for you.”
His words were quite intriguing, but Yan Qing pretended not to understand. She shifted her focus to the new employee, asking Mu Yang with a curious expression,
"Dr. Mu, why were those people making such a racket last night? It sounded like they were eating people! And the blood on the ground... I heard dozens of people died! Do you know what happened?"
Mu Yang nodded. "I guessed it last night. When has our doctors' dormitory ever had a dormitory supervisor before? But we had one yesterday. Aren't you curious?"
Of course she was curious, Yan Qing continued to stare at him.
Mu Yang seemed defeated by her persistence; he simply shrugged and gave up.
"Alright, I do know a little bit. There seems to be some trouble at the hospital's underground laboratory recently. Dean Xu is worried about not having enough manpower to help, so he's planning to select a few assistants from among our medical staff."
"Oh? Is that so?" This is big news. Yan Qing remembered Article 5 of the "Wenshan Sanatorium Rules":
The basement is a restricted area; no one is allowed to enter except the dean and his assistant.
The basement is definitely the core of this hospital. The only way to get in is to become the assistant to the dean. There is no other way.
And now, an opportunity has been placed right in front of her. But why does Yan Qing feel that everything is going a little too smoothly?
Yesterday, she and Yue Qi learned the secret of the underground laboratory from the fire escape, and today the door to this underground laboratory was opened to medical staff.
Something just doesn't seem right here.
