"What? Miss, you and Young Master Xiao are going out?" Wang Ma exclaimed in surprise, her eyes wide.
“Absolutely right!” Ye Ning replied calmly.
"Isn't that extremely dangerous, Miss? Can't we not go? It's freezing cold outside, and it's chaotic. What if we run into bad guys?" Wang Ma said anxiously. They had learned about everything that was happening outside through their phones, and now, in their eyes, the outside world was a den of dragons and tigers.
"Don't worry! Nothing will happen. Even if something does happen, Jingchen will protect me!" Ye Ning comforted her.
“Wang Ma, Uncle Liu, while we are gone, please try not to turn on the lights at night. If you are using heating, please be careful not to produce too much smoke, so as not to attract unwanted attention.”
"I'll keep Erhuang at home. It will alert you if any strangers approach."
"There's one more thing you need to pay special attention to: unless Jingchen and I come back, don't open the door for anyone. I mean anyone, no matter what their reason is."
"Have you remembered what I said?" Ye Ning finished explaining the points to note in one breath.
"Got it!" Aunt Wang and Uncle Liu nodded.
"This is a satellite phone. I've already saved my number in it, but please note that you shouldn't call this number unless it's urgent." Ye Ning handed the satellite phone to Wang Ma.
After explaining the situation to the shelter guards,
Xiao Jingchen and Brother Long Fei, on the other hand, began modifying and test-driving the snowmobiles.
In addition, Ye Ning also needs to make some preparations.
Because she had already filled the space to the brim with supplies, she now needed to move out some of the less important consumables.
For example, towels, and toiletries.
Three days later, everything was finally ready.
The first outing in the apocalypse has officially begun.
At six o'clock in the evening, as the blood-red sun began to lose its last glimmer of light.
The shelter doors finally opened again quietly.
Xiao Jingchen, holding Ye Ning's hand, slowly walked out from inside, with Long Fei following closely behind them like an iron tower.
They wore ordinary down jackets on the outside, but underneath they wore specially made winter clothing.
The snowmobiles were painted grayish-white, matching the color of the snow under the moonlight, and were also equipped with noise-dampening devices so they wouldn't be easily spotted at night.
To avoid revealing their location, they decided to set off after sunset.
"Miss, Young Master Jingchen, please be careful!" Aunt Wang and Uncle Liu waved their hands with tears in their eyes.
"Alright, we know. It's cold outside, you should go back!" Ye Ning sat on the back of the snowmobile and hugged Xiao Jingchen's waist tightly.
Big Yellow sat in a custom-made small seat in front of the car.
"Alright! You can all go back now! We'll be back soon!" Xiao Jingchen, who usually disliked formalities, surprisingly said a few warm words this time.
The roar of the engine began, and the snowmobile started speeding along.
Ye Ning felt gusts of snowflakes brushing against her hair, and the biting cold wind felt like a steel knife scraping her bare skin, causing her to shiver involuntarily.
"Ye Ning, are you cold? Should I drive slower?" Xiao Jingchen noticed the change in her body and asked her considerately.
Ye Ning shook her head. "No need, Jing Chen, I'm fine. Let's hurry and get going!"
Xiao Jingchen didn't say anything more, but he noticeably slowed down his driving.
Two hours later, they finally reached the border of the city.
A circular building came into view, suggesting that this place used to be a shopping mall.
Although they had taken precautions to keep warm, riding snowmobiles for long distances in such temperatures would be unbearable, so they decided to rest there for a while.
Xiao Jingchen and Long Fei looked around, took out shovels from their tool bags, aimed at a spot, and dug hard. A hole was quickly created.
Long Fei was the first to crawl in. After seeing that there was no danger, Xiao Jingchen pulled Ye Ning's hand and crawled in. Then they covered the entrance with snow to prevent it from being discovered and causing unnecessary trouble.
It was indeed a shopping mall inside, and a relatively well-preserved one at that.
They entered from the second floor of the mall, which was the women's clothing section. The racks were densely packed with thin summer clothes, all covered in frost.
Snow in August was something I'd only ever seen in books, but who knew it would actually happen today?
"Let's go downstairs! Lighting a fire here might attract attention," Brother Longfei suggested.
Neither Ye Ning nor Xiao Jingchen gave a definite answer.
The three of them went down to the first floor. It used to be a supermarket. Since it hadn't been dug up by anyone else, the supplies inside were still relatively well preserved. Except for the ventilation openings, the supplies in other places were not damaged by the wind and snow.
Long Fei and Xiao Jingchen started a fire, while Ye Ning wandered aimlessly around the supermarket.
If I see something I like, I just put it into my space.
Ye Ning remembered watching an animated series when she was a child. In one episode, the protagonist of the cartoon traveled to a world where he was all alone. He could take anything he wanted from any shopping mall, clothing store, or anywhere else. There was no homework and no pressure.
Back then, Ye Ning, who was troubled by her studies, was very envious of the protagonists in cartoons. She wished she could do whatever she wanted without any worldly constraints.
