"Hey, get up, it's time to get ready to leave." Ma Dongmei impatiently shoved one of them on the shoulder.
The man swayed slightly, then wobbled and fell into the car.
"What's going on?! Not a sound, not even a fart, what's going on?! Say something!"
It was only a little past 7 a.m., but the blazing sun was already making everyone sweat profusely, with body temperatures at least 40 degrees Celsius.
The high temperature had everyone in a bad mood, and some members of the team were already dissatisfied when they saw these people delaying the progress without saying a word.
Regardless of the sarcastic remarks from others, the five people in the car remained expressionless the entire time, their eyes wide open, showing no reaction to the sounds from the outside world.
Besides the K3 base, teams at other bases also have members in the same situation.
The number of abnormal personnel in K3 is relatively small, only five, while the other bases mostly have at least ten.
Even worse, some small, unfortunate bases had teams of about 20 people, half of whom were lying motionless in their vehicles.
The group exchanged bewildered glances, a chill creeping down their spines in unison.
These people were in such a strange state that, if their eyes weren't open, their bodies would look like those of a dead person.
Just a few hours ago, everyone was perfectly fine, and the whole night was peaceful without even a dog barking. But when I woke up, there were dozens of living dead people.
"Brother, blink if you feel uncomfortable." Zhang Xiaojuan, who was the most curious, leaned forward and gently nudged the person closest to her.
He ran his fingers across the man's temple, then suddenly lightened the pressure.
The person who was pushed tilted their head to an odd angle, their empty, blank eyes staring straight at Zhang Xiaojuan.
Zhang Xiaojuan felt a chill run down her spine from the stare and quickly withdrew her hand. "Awake?"
Gurgle.
As soon as he finished speaking, his round head suddenly rolled twice in the direction Zhang Xiaojuan was pointing and rolled out of the open car door.
Everyone at the K3 base turned to Zhang Xiaojuan.
"Holy crap! I didn't use any force! You all saw it! I just touched it lightly!"
Zhang Xiaojuan was startled and instinctively jumped back a big step.
The others present also felt their scalps tingle and subconsciously took several steps back.
Lu Sheng's cold eyes narrowed slightly as he glanced at the head that had rolled away.
The head was stuck on the side of the road and was picked up by Lü Song.
“That’s not right.” Xu Yi broke the silence in a low voice, “How can there be no blood after the head and body are separated?”
Only after Xu Yi's reminder did everyone realize that something was amiss.
Ma Dongmei was the first to rush over and lift up the headless torso, pulling the severed neck into the sunlight.
Everyone present immediately surrounded them, and the scene before them made everyone's pupils constrict.
There wasn't even a drop of blood at the severed opening of the headless torso...
Not only was there no blood, but there was also no fat or muscle; all that remained was a bare spine and a limp human skin.
Ma Dongmei's spirited eyebrows furrowed, and without hesitation, she reached into the broken end and scooped out a handful.
Splash!
As she moved, a strange friction sound came from the headless torso.
As her fingers penetrated deeper, Ma Dongmei's expression grew increasingly strange.
"It's all grass here..."
She pulled out her hand and took out a large clump of thin, long, tangled vine-like material.
On the other side, Lü Song immediately reached into the head and found it was indeed a clump of thin vines.
"Look, it has nothing to do with me! I really just touched it lightly!" Zhang Xiaojuan was sweating profusely and quickly stepped aside to avoid it.
Everyone was stunned by the horrifying scene before them, and for a moment they looked at each other, not knowing what to do.
In the end, Lu Sheng pushed aside the stunned crowd and grabbed the remaining four people to check them.
Sure enough, the bodies of the remaining four people were also completely filled with thin vines, and two of them even had small leaves sticking out of their ears and nostrils.
These people are all just skin and bones, their insides completely hollowed out and parasitized by dodder, like scarecrows dressed in clothes in a field.
"What the hell is this thing..." Ma Dongmei threw the headless torso on the ground and wiped her hands while trying to suppress her nausea.
Xu Yi adjusted the frame of his glasses on the bridge of his nose. "Dodder."
"Isn't dodder just that kind of roadside weed? How could it get inside your body?" Su Ke asked with a uncomfortable expression.
"Dodder has an extremely strong parasitic ability; a single plant can sow thousands of seeds and reproduce rapidly. Once this mutated plant burrows into the ear or nostril, it will quickly drain the host's fat and blood until only a skin remains."
Xu Yi's words sent chills down the spines of everyone present.
Even the smallest blade of grass, which was common in the pre-apocalyptic world, can silently kill several people in a single night. Does humanity really have a future?
"The seeds of this thing fly everywhere and it grows very fast. Immediately check each other's bodies and deal with any abnormalities immediately."
After saying that, Lu Sheng immediately pulled Sun Tiantian to his side for a thorough examination.
These mutated plants are often more terrifying than zombies and mutated animals. While other alien attacks at least provide an audible warning, these mutated plants can kill silently in one's sleep.
The others were already so frightened that their hair stood on end, and many even took off their clothes on the spot for their companions to check.
After some effort, they found a few more unfortunate birds that had been parasitized by dodder.
Some people don't even realize they have grass growing in their ears, and only feel a sense of dread after discovering the abnormality.
After disposing of all the corpses possessed by the dodder, the combined force had lost one-sixth of its members.
