Chapter 217 The Horror at the Tollbooth

Qi Peng's lawnmower team uses large lawnmowers, which are specially supplied to the village and town collective agriculture, and are about the same size as large excavators.

With small front wheels and high rear wheels, it has a strong recoil force and is equipped with two sets of mowing equipment at the front and rear, making it easy to move through the wildly growing mutated plant communities.

Through the modification of superpowers and machinery, each lawnmower has been expanded with a control room, allowing six people to sit on one machine.

One of the seats was a fixed driver's seat, where Qi Peng sat in front to operate the lawnmower. The other five seats were occupied by Lu Sheng and her two friends, plus Qi Yue and another girl who looked about seventeen or eighteen years old.

To save space, Lu Sheng temporarily put Zhuangzhuang and Huojian into his spatial storage, leaving the three boys and a few villagers to squeeze onto a lawnmower in the back.

Qi Yue tied a hemp rope around the neck of the carrion pig, and the person sat in the cart while the pig followed on the ground.

Lu Sheng glanced back and saw that there were ten carrion pigs, tied together with hemp rope, obediently following next to the lawnmower.

"You guys are going to K3 too?"

Upon hearing the word "also," Qi Yue excitedly grabbed Lu Sheng's arm, "Great! We're going the same way, so feel free to ride our lawnmower!"

After saying that, she glanced at the group of people staring at her from the side and awkwardly added, "Let's all be together, it'll be more lively, otherwise it'll be quite boring on the way."

Then he grabbed a handful of corn kernels from his pocket and stuffed them into the hands of Lu Sheng and the other two.

It's the kind of snack you could occasionally buy from a trolley at the rendezvous point before the apocalypse. It's made of pure corn kernels stir-fried with sugar and salt, making them crispy and crunchy, and they taste delicious.

"Are all of you planning to join the K3 base?"

Lu Sheng slowly chewed the dry, fragrant corn kernels, subtly observing Qi Peng and Qi Yue.

This family is a rare kind-hearted person in the apocalypse, and their friendly and natural attitude makes people feel comfortable.

But after nearly four years of living in the apocalypse, she still has an instinctive wariness of strangers.

"We're doing just fine in the village, we're not going to the base!"

Qi Yue shook her head repeatedly, "The K3 base sent out a message on the radio to collect grain. Our village doesn't have much of anything except grain, so we wanted to use the extra grain to exchange for some industrial products."

"We farmers aren't very capable. Our only skills are farming and raising pigs. We don't have to worry about food, but we lack other supplies." Qi Peng turned around from the driver's seat and gave Lu Sheng and the others a simple and honest smile.

Lu Sheng and the other two exchanged glances out of the corner of their eyes, and their wariness eased slightly.

No wonder these people are so hospitable; they've never experienced hunger before and don't know that in the apocalypse, people can fight to the death for a bite to eat.

People feel better when they are well-fed, and they are more friendly towards others.

"But after the acid rain, many soil layers were corroded, making it impossible to grow crops. Weren't you affected?"

Sun Tiantian glanced curiously at the carrion-eating pigs outside.

They were all plump and healthy, and it was obvious that they had never been hungry.

"The villagers have awakened agricultural superpowers, including the ability to generate powerful fertilizers, shorten growth cycles, optimize soil, and some that control pests."

When talking about their areas of expertise, Qi Yue and Qi Peng were clearly radiant.

Lu Sheng and the others were dumbfounded.

It's true that everyone has their own expertise; professional tasks should be done by professionals.

"The village has more grain than in the years before the apocalypse, and the warehouse doors are almost too big to close. But we don't have the means to produce normal daily necessities, so we're thinking of exchanging some grain with the K3 base."

After Qi Peng's explanation, Lu Sheng and the others finally lowered their guard.

Since they were all traveling the same way, the group chatted and laughed while sitting on the bumpy lawnmower, and before they knew it, they had traveled more than ten kilometers.

Finally, the lawnmower team led Lu Sheng and the others to the outskirts of the city, dozens of kilometers away from the K3 base.

The night was pitch black, and the highway, overrun by mutated plants and animals, looked eerie. The fog lights cast shadowy outlines of the tollbooth in the distance, now covered in weeds.

The boundless night was like a giant maw ready to devour everything, eerie and silent.

Before even getting off the lawnmower, Qi Peng leaned half his body out of the car window and looked around, a sense of unease rising in his heart.

"This place is a bit eerie."

Having spent many years in the fields and among plants, Qi Peng has developed a keen sense of smell for them.

After the eternal night descended, although the world was shrouded in darkness, all living things except humans evolved to be more adapted to the environment.

The lawnmower is very loud, and normally it would startle animals and plants hiding in the shadows.

But the surroundings were eerily quiet.

Not to mention the mutated animals that usually rampage around, there wasn't even a single annoying chirp or bird call.

Lu Sheng picked up his flashlight and swept it across the jagged, tangled bushes beside him, only to see a patch of withered, dry vines on the ground.

Most flying insects are attracted to light, especially after the end of the Eternal Night Era when natural light has completely disappeared; flashlights are a deadly attraction for these insects.

Lu Sheng swung his flashlight around a few times, but didn't attract even a small flying insect.

There must be something wrong around here.

"Brother Qi, are we still going to the K3 base?" another quiet girl in the car asked timidly.

Qi Peng leaned forward and looked around again, then gritted his teeth and said, "We have to go. How can we not go? This is all the lighting equipment we have left in the village. If we can't get supplies in return, we won't be able to go back."

Having made up their minds, the lawnmower team slowly drove towards the toll station.

This expressway is considered a vital route connecting the capital city with neighboring provinces, and its toll stations are quite large.
