The crystal cores they dug out of the zombies' heads were about half the length of a thumb. After being cleaned, they were crystals that could refract light in the sunlight, making them look very beautiful and sparkling, much like the crystals from before the apocalypse.
However, the crystal cores that Xiao Yu pulled out of these zombie brains were of varying sizes, with the largest being as long as a finger joint and the smallest barely larger than a soybean.
Moreover, these crystal nuclei looked like they had lost water; they were dirty and dry, with a murky and dull color, completely lacking the texture of crystal.
After washing it clean, you can still vaguely see tiny cracks covering the crystal core.
“These crystal cores are so poorly made, they look like those cheap jade bracelets sold on TikTok.” Zhang Xiaojuan took one from Xiao Yu’s hand, examined it for a while, and then handed it to Xu Yi with a look of disgust.
Xu Yi held up the crystal cores and examined them for a moment in the light. "These crystal cores have shrunk. They will crumble into powder if they are subjected to the slightest impact or stimulation."
"Can a zombie still live if it loses its crystal core?" Sun Tiantian endured the nausea and dug out a few more brains. Sure enough, all the crystal cores were dry and covered with cracks.
Lu Sheng shook his head. "The crystal core is like the heart for zombies and superhumans. Damage to the crystal core is no less than an explosion to the brain. Without the crystal core, it is very difficult for zombies and superhumans to continue to survive."
Everyone was lost in thought, but Fang Rongrong had a somber expression.
She bent down to examine all the zombies' heads, her voice filled with astonishment, "I never imagined that Ji Lingang actually succeeded in his research..."
"What did you succeed at? Teacher Fang, don't keep us in suspense." Ji Feng spoke with a slightly coquettish tone, as was his habit.
Fang Rongrong's gaze darkened, and she crushed the crystal core she had just dug out into powder. "These crystal cores were all dug out of the heads of other zombies or superhumans by Ji Lingang and transplanted into these people."
"Huh...? This is equivalent to a brain transplant, right?" Zhang Xiaojuan swallowed in surprise.
"All the zombies you see now were originally innocent test subjects imprisoned by Ji Lingang," Fang Rongrong said, pointing to the uniform white and blue striped hospital gowns worn by the zombies.
"Back when I was still in the lab, Ji Lingang had proposed to conduct experiments on crystal nucleus transplantation, but I declined at the time with some excuse. I never expected that he would actually succeed in just a few months..."
Fang Rongrong's expression was serious. "The dryness and cracks are caused by the rejection reaction after the crystal core was transplanted."
"Are you crazy? There are so many wild Calabash Brothers outside, why do you have to create and raise Ultraman in a lab?" Zhang Xiaojuan was very puzzled, and the look in her eyes when she looked at Fang Rongrong seemed to have already categorized her and Ji Lingang as people who were just bored and had nothing better to do.
Fang Rongrong gave a wry smile, "It's not as simple as you think."
"Ji Lingang, that old fox, won't do anything without a profit. The spray that controls zombies has certain limitations; it's generally more effective against fresh zombies."
"Ji Lin has just started his research on crystal core transplantation, probably to create a zombie army that he is satisfied with and that is easier to control."
Ji Feng blinked innocently, "That's exactly the kind of thing that old dog Ji would do."
Everyone present felt a chill run down their spines, and had a physiological aversion to Ji Lingang, whom they had not yet met.
There are already more wild zombies than living people outside, and this old man is still going all out to create new ones. Is he afraid that the world is not chaotic enough?
Even a mosquito's leg is meat. Although the quality of these crystal cores was relatively poor, Lu Sheng and the others still took them all, adhering to the principle of not wasting resources.
Fortunately, the system did help out once, allowing users to exchange these inferior crystal cores for half the price of high-quality ordinary crystal cores in the system store, so it wasn't too much of a loss.
Led by the monsoon, the group quickly descended the stairs to a deeper area.
The scattered groups of zombies they encountered along the way were all swallowed up by the rocket, one by one, without giving Lu Sheng and the others any trouble.
To avoid giving Ji Lingang too much information, Xu Yi kept an eye on his surroundings and destroyed any surveillance equipment he found along the way.
This resulted in Ji Lingang seeing Lu Sheng and the others appear on the surveillance footage only to have the screen turn into a jumble of static every time he saw them.
When he reappeared in the next shot, the zombie test subjects in the corridor were already neatly laid out on the floor. He hadn't seen Lu Sheng and the others deal with the zombies at all.
"Damn it... these little brats..." Ji Lingang's cheek muscles trembled slightly with anger.
He has always valued his appearance, and despite being over fifty, he looks like he's in his thirties, even younger than his own son, Ji Boyan.
But now, in his rage, even his technologically enhanced handsome face finally showed a trace of age.
Meanwhile, Lu Sheng and his group had already cleared three consecutive underground fortresses and were entering the fourth level.
Completely different from the three floors above, the fourth floor is the core area of the Ji family bunker. This floor is like the heart of the entire bunker, divided into several work areas with different functions.
All rooms in the area are equipped with advanced iris detection electronic locks, and each area even has a thoughtfully provided tea room.
The refrigerator in the break room was equipped with nutritionally balanced light meals and a hot and cold beverage machine, much like a large company before the apocalypse.
After a long day of searching, everyone was exhausted and thirsty. Zhang Xiaojuan suggested that they go to the tea room to rest for two minutes, drink some ice water, and then continue searching.
"Am I getting old? Why do I feel so tired today?" Zhang Xiaojuan took a cup of Xiangpiaopiao instant milk tea from the cabinet in the tea room and presented it to Xiao Yu with both hands. "Give me some hot water. I'm used to your water, and I don't like the water here."
