The lights on the fifth basement level went out, and it was pitch black, so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face.
Lu Sheng and his group held their breath, making the rhythmic chewing sounds even clearer.
Ji Feng raised his flashlight, casting a beam as thick as a bowl into the depths of the corridor. The snow-white walls were covered in splattered blood, and scattered pieces of bloody human tissue lay on the floor.
Mutilated fingers, clumps of hair, and some internal organs broken into small pieces.
The beam of the flashlight slowly swept along the wall deeper into the corridor. At the corner of the corridor, several zombies were pouncing on an unlucky guy, enjoying a sashimi buffet.
The zombie's sharp teeth were like files, tearing off strips of fresh flesh from the man's body and chewing them up in large mouthfuls.
The moment the flashlight swept across them, several zombies raised their heads in unison, their gray-white eyes rolling around as they stared blankly at Lu Sheng and the others, letting out low growls.
The injured man, still breathing, tilted his head back and looked pleadingly at Lu Sheng and the others.
Help me.
Her vocal cords were torn, and only faint words could be discerned from her slightly trembling lips.
Then, her tear-filled eyes suddenly turned strangely, and when she opened them again, they had turned completely gray.
"She's turned into a zombie!" Ji Feng strapped the flashlight to his wrist and turned back to warn Lu Sheng and the others.
Zombies don't eat their own kind. One second she was a pitiful woman who was food, and the next she was staggering into the horde of zombies.
Unable to use their superpowers, the remaining people, except for Lu Sheng, immediately took out the weapons given to them by Xu Yi and tried to fire at the zombies.
Under the overwhelming firepower, more than a dozen level-five zombies were quickly riddled with holes.
"No matter how high your superpowers are, you're still afraid of being hit by firearms." Zhang Xiaojuan excitedly rubbed the slightly warm barrel of the gun as she fired it for the first time.
Xu Yi narrowed his eyes and pointed the gun at several surveillance areas in the corridor where red lights were flashing.
Several shots rang out in quick succession, completely turning the fifth basement level into a blind spot for surveillance cameras.
Having cleared the obstacles in their path, Fang Rongrong, supporting her pregnant belly, looked strained with each step. "The Ji family's bunker laboratory is just ahead. Let's go inside and see if we can find anything useful."
Following the directions Fang Rongrong pointed out, the group quickly found the location of the laboratory.
The entire laboratory is extremely large, occupying almost half of the entire fifth basement level.
The laboratory is neatly divided into three parts: on the left is a storage room for various text and image materials and experimental records and reports, and there are several offices with clearly defined functions.
The central circular area is a separate workbench area. Most of the utensils and machines on the workbench show obvious signs of use, indicating that someone used it not long ago.
The right-hand area was divided into individual small rooms like a prison, each made of special explosion-proof glass, with a figure in a white and blue striped hospital gown lying on the single bed inside.
People locked in isolation wards are like specimens, just waiting to be cruelly dissected and analyzed.
Lu Sheng frowned as he looked around the isolation room. Most of the single beds were equipped with metal restraints, binding the various superhumans tightly to the beds like pigs.
Most of those imprisoned inside are mid-to-high-level superhumans, as well as some mutants who have been parasitized by other species.
Fang Rongrong, heavily pregnant, strode into the archives and quickly flipped through the latest experimental records on the shelves.
As she flipped through the pages, her expression grew increasingly serious.
Finally, Fang Rongrong revealed a look of horror, supporting her stomach as she slowly leaned back in her chair, "I didn't expect Ji Lingang's experiments to be progressing so quickly... He's already experimenting with artificial crystal cores..."
Artificial crystal nuclei?
Zhang Xiaojuan scratched her head, still somewhat skeptical. "This thing can actually be made by hand?"
No one can explain the origin of the crystal core clearly; it is simply a product that emerged simultaneously with the arrival of the apocalypse and the mutation of zombies and supernatural beings.
Fang Rongrong handed a thick stack of experimental records to Lu Sheng and Xu Yi. "The speed of zombie evolution has always been far faster than the upgrade speed of superhumans. Ji Lingang had previously suggested whether it was possible to use artificial intervention to improve superhumans as quickly as possible."
“At the time, I thought he was talking nonsense, but now, looking at these records, his experiments have made groundbreaking progress.”
Fang Rongrong walked unsteadily to the vicinity of the experimental table and searched for a while before finally picking up a sealed bottle. "This is the artificially modified crystal nucleus."
The bottle was filled with a pale yellow, viscous liquid, and tiny crystal nuclei were encased in the liquid, emitting a faint glow.
Several cracks of varying depths are evenly distributed on the surface of the crystal nucleus, and viscous liquid slowly seeps in.
"Ji Lingang not only successfully developed the live human crystal core transplantation technique, but he can even perfectly replicate the crystal cores and superpowers of zombies onto experimental subjects."
Fang Rongrong cautiously approached the glass partition and pointed to the female superhuman on the bed with a blank and numb gaze, "Look at her forehead, there are stitches."
Several people gathered around, and they all frowned in unison.
There was a centipede-like suture mark at the woman's hairline, clearly a perfunctory treatment after craniotomy.
Fang Rongrong found the corresponding experimental data based on the number on the isolation room. "This person was originally a fourth-level wood-type ability user. Ji Lin just took out her crystal core and cultivated and modified it outside the body, fusing it with the crystal core solution of a strength-type zombie."
As soon as she finished speaking, the woman on the bed suddenly woke up.
"Awooo!"
The woman let out two angry roars, and instantly, bulging blood vessels appeared on her skin, while her limbs and bones grew rapidly at a visible speed.
