Lu Sheng raised a finger to make a shushing gesture, quickened his movements, and glanced around at the same time.
From the moment she entered, she noticed that all the lights in the building were on, the incandescent light was dazzling, and the light was so intense that it created a strange sense of oppression.
Most of the people around were excited, and they were all full of anticipation for the experiment.
A young woman in her early twenties was chattering away next to Lu Sheng, lovingly stroking the sterile gowns displayed in the closet, "They're pure cotton! Feel them! They're pure cotton!"
In the post-apocalyptic world, resources are relatively scarce. In order to minimize wear and tear and extend the lifespan of clothing, materials are made of relatively rough and durable components. Comfortable pure cotton fabrics are rare.
The male researcher next to Meng Rui frowned slightly. "Keep quiet here. Don't speak louder than 20 decibels."
Oblivious to her excitement, the young woman continued to enthusiastically arrange the slippers in the closet, exclaiming, "Even the slippers are soft! Look!"
As soon as she finished speaking, a cool breeze suddenly swept past her from behind.
The male researcher had already slipped behind her, grabbed her by the back of the neck, and slammed her head hard against the cabinet door.
Bang!
After a loud metallic clang, two lines of blood dripped from the cabinet door.
Everyone tensed up at the sudden turn of events.
Most of the selected people were strangers to each other, and no one was willing to stand up for the woman. They all stared at the two of them in astonishment.
The young woman let out a painful whimper, covering her mouth and nose with both hands. Blood kept gushing out from between her fingers, quickly forming a puddle on the ground.
Meng Rui showed a hint of reluctance and raised her voice slightly, "Alright, Deng Ran!"
The male researcher glanced at Meng Rui, then expressionlessly released her and slowly straightened his clothes. "Once you're in the research institute, you have to follow the rules. Everyone needs to cooperate to make things more comfortable."
"You'd better remember everything I say, or don't blame me for being rude if you don't listen."
He spoke slowly, each word distinct, and those around him nodded instinctively. The changing room, which had just been as noisy as a market, fell silent instantly.
Sun Lu frowned and secretly made a seven gesture to Lu Sheng.
This researcher named Deng Ran is so fast that even she can't keep up with him; his ability level has likely already reached the seventh rank.
The research institute was indeed full of hidden talents; even a junior researcher there was a hidden master.
"Go arrange your accommodation first, I'll look after things here."
At the critical moment, Meng Rui broke the suffocating atmosphere by giving Deng Ran a reason to leave.
Deng Ran glanced at Meng Rui as if he wanted to say something, but in the end left without saying a word.
Only after his footsteps disappeared into the corridor did the young woman dare to raise her head tremblingly and let out a soft sob.
Meng Rui came over to check the injury and sighed helplessly, "Your nose is broken."
She then glanced at the number on the cabinet and wrote it down in her notebook. "Bear with it, I'll bring you some medicine when I have time."
"You all better be careful; you won't always be this lucky." Meng Rui looked around at the young faces in the room. "You must strictly abide by the institute's regulations, understand?"
Everyone present nodded repeatedly, their excitement at successfully advancing vanishing in an instant.
But the thought of being able to live a life free from financial worries in the future made many people who were considering quitting grit their teeth and persevere.
After everyone changed into sterile gowns and slippers, they put their wristbands on their wrists and lined up to follow Meng Rui as they walked towards the accommodation area.
The dormitories were arranged according to their numbers, and the accommodation conditions were similar to those in the dormitories when I was in school. There were six people in each room, with three bunk beds in total. Each dormitory room was equipped with a private bathroom. There were no windows in the rooms, and there was a faint dampness in the air.
Lu Sheng quietly observed the surrounding environment and security measures as he walked, quickly organizing and analyzing the route from the entrance of the research institute to the dormitory and memorizing it.
Although it was supposed to be part of an experiment, the entire route was monitored every three steps and guarded every five steps, making it no different from a prison.
But apart from Lu Sheng and Sun Lu, the rest of the people didn't seem to care about any of this, and some even felt quite pleased that their safety was guaranteed.
It wasn't until rooms were assigned according to number that someone exclaimed in surprise, "Aren't there gender segregation in the accommodations? Mixed-gender rooms?"
Deng Ran glanced at the man and said, "Yes."
"This isn't really appropriate... It's so inconvenient to take off your clothes to sleep." The person speaking glanced timidly at Deng Ran and lowered their voice weakly.
Finally, he silently shut his mouth.
Deng Ran's cold gaze swept over everyone again. "Any more objections?"
Everyone fell silent, too afraid to utter another word.
Lu Sheng and Sun Lu were assigned to a dormitory room near the corner of the stairs in the corridor, and the two of them shared a bunk bed.
A quick glance revealed at least four or five hidden surveillance cameras in the room, and even the bathroom had concealed surveillance equipment.
The institute staff assisted everyone into their rooms and evacuated shortly afterward. After everyone left, some curious residents slipped out of the dormitory to take a stroll, only to discover that both staircases on either side of the building were locked with electronic doors.
This means that these researchers' activity range is limited to their dormitories and corridors; they can't go anywhere else.
Soon it was lunchtime, and the research institute arranged for someone to deliver boxed meals, distributed per person, to the door of each dormitory.
Today's meal is braised beef brisket with radish and cold shredded potatoes, plus a serving of sweetened soy milk for everyone.
