"With the original strain, can we develop a zombie virus vaccine?" Han Rui, the curious child, came over.
Xu Yi carefully placed the sample into his own space. "Once we have the strain, we can try to develop the most basic live vaccine. However, vaccine development is a long-term project, which may take years to calculate."
"It's okay, just trust Teacher Xu!" Zhang Xiaojuan excitedly ran a long lap in the sunshine and returned to the car, sweating profusely.
The joy of seeing the sunlight again lasted for less than an hour before everyone felt slapped in the face.
Sunshine might not bring hope, it might bring utter despair.
"Holy crap...why is it so hot...?"
Halfway through the journey, Zhang Xiaojuan had stripped down to just a tank top and shorts. The others weren't in much better shape; apart from Lu Sheng and Xu Yi, everyone else was drenched in sweat, their clothes completely soaked.
The RV was stuffy like a giant steamer, and they were all human buns inside.
Even with the air conditioning on, the temperature kept rising, and the leather interior of the RV was so hot to the touch that it was almost burning hot.
Han Rui hurriedly rolled down the car window, hoping to get some fresh air and cool off, but the moment the glass was down, a wave of heat rushed in.
"How hot is it outside?" Han Rui gasped for breath, reaching her hand out the car window to test the temperature before immediately pulling it back. "Hot, hot, hot!"
She hurriedly blew hard on her fingers, but her palms swelled up red and swollen.
Sun Tiantian immediately made a bunch of ice balls and distributed them to everyone to cool them down, while Shi Nian blinked her beautiful big eyes and held Han Rui's fingers in her own hand.
A cool chill came over her, and Han Rui realized that the temperature in her palms had dropped.
"Niannian is amazing." Han Rui endured the pain and used her plant-based superpower to grow an ear of sweet corn that could be eaten raw, and handed it to Shi Nian.
Shi Nian sat up straight with delight, holding Han Rui's hand in one hand and picking up a corn cob with the other, taking small bites. "I'm a half-zombie, so my body temperature is about the same as a dead person's, which is very refreshing."
Everyone: "..."
“Child, sometimes we don’t need to be so honest.” Zhang Xiaojuan hesitated before continuing.
With Sun Tiantian and Xiao Yu working together to make a lot of ice, the temperature inside the RV was kept within a acceptable range. However, everyone sat upright, and no one dared to touch the roof or doors.
These places are so hot right now, they're like branding irons; you can burn your hand just by touching them.
The car's interior thermometer shows a real-time temperature of 48 degrees Celsius.
"Is it that time of year again when it gets extremely hot?" Sun Tiantian's hands were aching from rubbing ice hockey so much. "Why does this feel even harder to endure than the last time it got so hot?"
Lu Sheng took out the sunglasses she had bought at the mall from her spatial storage and distributed them to the people in the car. "Last time it was just heat, but this time it's direct ultraviolet radiation that will burn your skin and mucous membranes. You should put on your glasses first."
The perceived temperature is not as high as it was during the extreme heat of the early post-apocalyptic period, but Han Rui was burned as soon as she stretched out her hand, which clearly indicates that the intensity of ultraviolet radiation outside is too high.
"Aren't ultraviolet rays good for your health?" Zhang Xiaojuan asked, looking bewildered. "Didn't they always say on TV that it's good to go out and get some sun, that ultraviolet rays are beneficial to health?"
Han Rui looked him up and down with the same look she gave a stray dog. "Don't you know? Excessive ultraviolet radiation can cause cancer. Skin cancer is terrifying."
"Ultraviolet radiation is part of solar radiation. Previously, the atmospheric ozone layer could absorb 99% of ultraviolet radiation, so under normal circumstances, we could not feel the harm of ultraviolet radiation. But after nuclear contamination, the atmosphere has been destroyed, and now we are facing direct ultraviolet radiation that is tens or hundreds of times stronger than before the apocalypse."
As Xu Yi explained to everyone, he sped up the car.
Zhang Xiaojuan tucked the ice puck between her neck and armpits and couldn't help but curse, "This life is fucking awful. If it weren't for these people taking revenge on society, we wouldn't be in such a miserable state now."
"What would happen if you were accidentally exposed to direct ultraviolet rays?" Sun Tiantian asked, handing the ice puck to Lu Sheng.
Lu Sheng glanced out the car window with a serious expression. The scorching sun had baked the weeds on both sides of the road until they were withered and curled up, and even the air outside the window was blurred and distorted.
"Given the current intensity of ultraviolet radiation, blisters will form within minutes, potentially leading to other complications. From now on, please try not to leave the base."
At least the system's gifts are generous; based on the previous description of the base, the base's interior is not affected by the external environment.
What would normally be a journey of several hours was completed in less than two hours thanks to Xu Yi's high-speed driving.
The mountain was littered with the corpses of mutated animals and insects, and the RV made a crunching sound as it drove by.
When the little panda saw the RV approaching from afar, it immediately ran out of the apartment, and as soon as the door opened, it hugged Lu Sheng's leg and rubbed against him affectionately.
"You've been working hard lately, watching the house all by yourself." Lu Sheng patted the little panda's fluffy head and took out a watermelon popsicle from his spatial storage for it.
The fluffy little dumpling hugged the popsicle and munched on it happily, then, as if giving a work report, clung to Lu Sheng's leg and led her to inspect the various projects within the base.
Pigs, cows, sheep, and chickens are all plump and juicy, vegetables and fruits are growing well, and even vending machines and supermarkets have doubled their revenue.
Lu Sheng even had a strange feeling that if it weren't for these people causing trouble, the base might have been even more profitable under the management of the little panda...
Back in their familiar surroundings, the remaining few finally survived.
"Nowhere is as good as home, home is so comfortable, sob sob sob." As soon as Zhang Xiaojuan entered the door, she picked a handful of big strawberries from the experimental field and ate them with teary eyes.
