Lu Sheng's expression shifted slightly.
These villagers also knew about crystal cores, and no one around the man showed any surprise while he was speaking.
It seems the villagers have killed zombies.
"Okay, is this enough?"
Lu Sheng took out fifty intermediate-level crystal cores and gestured to the middle-aged man leading the crowd, "Fifty cores, for three nights."
She gave the current market price; if these villagers knew anything about the outside world, they should know the value of these crystal cores.
Sure enough, upon seeing the shiny white crystal cores, the middle-aged man leading the group's eyes lit up, and he immediately took them from Lu Sheng with a beaming smile. "That's enough! This is more than enough! You should have said so earlier if you had money!"
"You must be exhausted from your journey. I'll arrange accommodation and dinner for you right away. Make yourself at home here. Money talks."
The villagers who had been watching with cold faces suddenly became all smiles, and even the way they looked at Lu Sheng and her group changed. They were all as happy as if it were New Year's Day.
Han Rui, holding Lu Sheng's arm, was somewhat surprised by how quickly the villagers' expressions changed. "Their faces change so fast. Money really can make the devil turn the millstone."
"I'm afraid that what they're after isn't just your money."
Lu Sheng sneered.
Surrounded by villagers, the group marched into the village, attracting onlookers from every household along the way. Even She Niu Han Rui couldn't withstand the pressure of being watched and hid behind Zhang Xiaojuan with her head down.
Bang bang bang.
As the group walked past a small courtyard, a low, clanging sound suddenly came from their side.
Bang bang bang.
Several sounds came from a dirty little wooden hut at the edge of the yard.
Lu Sheng and the others were drawn to the sound and looked toward the small house.
The makeshift wooden hut, constructed from a few rough planks, emitted a nauseating, fishy stench that could be smelled from several meters away. There was also a yellowish-brown stain on the door panel that looked like a urine stain.
"What was that sound?" Han Rui asked softly.
The village chief, who had been walking ahead, suddenly stopped, his face darkening. "Aunt Zhang, what's wrong with your livestock shed? Go check it out right now!"
The middle-aged woman named Aunt Zhang was stunned for a moment, then quickly smiled apologetically, "Oh dear, my old dog is sick and very restless, so we couldn't bear to kill it and kept it in the small room."
After saying that, Aunt Zhang rushed to the small wooden house and kicked it twice. "You damn dog, are you trying to die?! Quiet down!"
As she continued her cursing, there was indeed no sound from inside.
Lu Sheng glanced at the dilapidated wooden house out of the corner of his eye, only catching a fleeting glimpse of a pupil through the cracks in the wooden planks.
The village chief arranged for Lu Sheng and the others to stay in the village committee's office building, which had three large rooms.
“Our accommodations are limited, so please make do. If you need anything, just let us know.” The village chief pointed to Xu Hao, a short man standing next to him, “This is my nephew. If you need anything, just ask him.”
Xu Hao stared greedily at Lu Sheng and the others with his triangular eyes.
These women are so beautiful, with delicate, fair skin and slender, graceful figures. He had never seen such beautiful women before.
"What would you like to eat? We don't have much else, but we have plenty of grain," Xu Hao boasted proudly. "We still have a lot of rice, cabbage, and potatoes in our cellar. You haven't had rice in a long time, have you?"
Xu Yi politely but distantly ushered Xu Hao out the door, saying, "We ate on the way here, thank you."
As the group was talking, a figure draped in a worn-out floral bed sheet suddenly rushed over from the other side of the corridor and crashed into Xiao Yu, who was standing on the outermost side.
"Want to play Eagle Catches Chicks?" A rough young male voice came from under the flowery bed sheet.
Xiao Yu frowned and shielded Sun Tiantian behind her.
Seeing this, Xu Hao grabbed the floral bed sheet and kicked it away, yelling and cursing, "You crazy bastard, get out of here!"
Let's go!
The flowery bed sheet wasn't angry after being hit; it stumbled and ran towards the door, tripping over the door frame as it reached it.
Xu Hao cursed a few times, then turned to Lu Sheng and the others to explain, "My cousin was the only college student in the village, but he fell from a tree and broke his head."
"What's the point of studying every day? It'll only make you stupid."
Lu Sheng had no interest in listening to his complaints and simply closed the door, effectively telling him to leave. "Sorry, we're sleepy, we're going to bed now."
Xu Hao was rebuffed. He touched his lips sullenly and muttered under his breath, "You little bitch, just you wait. You'll be begging me for help someday."
Watching Xu Hao walk away from the window, Xiao Yu suddenly stretched out her hand, revealing a crumpled piece of paper in her palm. "That's the floral bed sheet that was given to me earlier."
"Huh?" Zhang Xiaojuan looked completely bewildered. "When did he give it to you?"
"When he bumped into me, he stuffed the crumpled paper into my hand."
The group of people opened the crumpled paper with a puzzled look, and Lu Sheng couldn't hold back his excitement at first glance.
There are three lines on the crumpled paper. The first two lines are calculus formulas learned in the second year of university!
Why does Lu Sheng remember it so clearly? Because she failed her course.
These formulas were ones she had studied intensively before her make-up exams, and she remembered them vividly.
The third line of the crumpled paper contained only two words.
Run!
The group of people looked at each other, bewildered.
"Didn't Xu Hao say that person was crazy? It's probably just a prank?" Han Rui guessed, resting her cheeks on her hands.
Although Sun Tiantian became a poor student after the college entrance examination, she helped Lu Sheng copy a lot of notes when he was working, so she was still very familiar with these formulas. "I don't think so. He even wrote down two calculus formulas from university textbooks, as if he wanted to prove to us that he was a university student."
“Is it possible that he’s actually faking his madness?” Xiao Yu carefully unfolded the paper ball. “Look at his handwriting. It’s very neat, and the strokes have a unique style. Most people don’t have such good handwriting.”
Sun Lu also agreed with Xiao Yu's statement, "Moreover, he carefully selected his target. Xiao Yu is the tallest among us and seems to have the best physical condition, so he chose Xiao Yu to pass the paper ball."
"Then why did he pretend to be crazy, and why did he remind us to run?" Han Rui asked, puzzled.
Xu Yi remained calm, took out a lighter and lit the paper ball. "Keep the matter of the paper ball a secret from the villagers."
The remaining people nodded.
"But along the way, I felt that the people in the village were nothing special, just ordinary folks who love money a bit?" Xiao Yu looked bewildered.
Xu Yi adjusted his glasses. "No, there's something very unusual about the village."
"What's wrong?" The remaining people immediately sat up straight.
The scenes along the way after entering the village flashed rapidly through Lu Sheng's mind.
Finally, an idea flashed through Lu Sheng's mind.
"The age distribution of men in the village is relatively normal, but there are no young women."
