Chapter 15 Prelude

Chapter 15 Prelude

"Get up quickly, Xiaobao has a fever!"

As more and more vehicles stopped near the bus, Jiang's father, mother and Jiang Dong also came back.

Seeing that Jiang's father and mother looked unhappy, Jiang Qian did not ask any more questions. She thought the situation at the foot of the mountain should be worse than before.

When they came back and heard from everyone that they could apply for supplies online, they smiled a little more.

"Okay, okay, there's hope now."

Jiang Qian sought the opinions of her family members and also filled out and submitted the application form online.

As for when it will be delivered? We can only wait.

Some people who had finished their calls early had already returned to the temple and told others the news. So, in the following days, cars came down from the mountain from time to time, all of them coming to the network to apply for supplies.

After ten o'clock in the evening, the cars that stayed on the mountain road gradually returned, leaving only the Jiang family's bus.

Jiang Mingchen had already dozed off due to sleepiness. Seeing this, Jiang Weimin drove the car forward a little further and found a relatively flat place to park. The whole family slept in the car.

The rain stopped, and the dark clouds in the sky gradually dispersed under the blowing of the night wind. The moon, which had disappeared for several days, finally appeared.

The nearly full moon was spreading its light in the sky, and the bright moonlight gave a not very detailed outline to the dark scenery not far away.

Jiang Qian lay on the cushion by the window, thinking about the prophecy she had heard before, and had no desire to sleep at all.

She looked at the moon outside through the window and listened to the sound of flowing water not far away. It was obviously the quietest summer night, but her heart was not calm at all.

But what she didn't know was that the temple not far from them was not peaceful at the moment.

Li Wenhui held her son in her arms and put her hand on the child's head, only to feel it was burning hot.

She saw that the child looked listless and thought he was just sleepy, but she didn't expect he had a fever.

This has been her biggest worry since she evacuated to the mountains after the heavy rain. Therefore, in addition to food, the most she took from the family car was her children's clothes. However, she didn't expect that even with such caution, the child would still get sick.

"Ayuan, get up quickly, Xiaobao has a fever!"

When her husband Zhang Yuan heard the shouting, he dazedly straightened up from the front passenger seat and rubbed his eyes. "What's going on?"

"Could he have caught a cold after jumping in a puddle outside in the evening?" Li Wenhui reached out and touched the child again. "I told you to keep an eye on him. What if he gets sick in this situation?"

"Don't worry," Zhang Yuan glanced at the child's red cheeks and pushed open the car door. "There are so many villages, there must be a village doctor. I'll go find him now."

"Then go quickly."

A child's illness is no small matter. Zhang Yuan was very quick and soon found a doctor from the neighboring village, followed by the child's grandparents.

Their family only drove out in this small car, which only had seats for four and was not very spacious. So upon arriving at the temple, the elderly couple went to sleep on the floor in the main hall, leaving the car, which had more privacy, for the family of three.

The old couple had already fallen asleep, but when they heard their son's voice they realized that their grandson was sick, so they quickly got up and followed him.

Father Zhang looked at his grandson's blushing face and asked worriedly, "What happened?"

The village doctor was very calm. He used a flashlight to check the child's condition and said comfortingly, "It's okay. He probably caught a cold, which caused the fever. The weather has been bad recently, and many adults in the temple have colds and coughs!"

Li Wenhui heard this, but still felt uneasy.

"Then, doctor, what do you think we should do? We need to get his fever down first, right?"

The village doctor was silent for a moment, then he took a flashlight and searched in the medicine box he brought with him. His brows furrowed, and he felt a little tricky for a moment.

"Originally, an injection or some medicine would be enough, but in this situation, I don't have any medicine suitable for children. Come with me and ask if any village has brought out fever-reducing medicine."

"Thank you, thank you." Li Wenhui hurriedly expressed her gratitude.

Zhang's father and Zhang Yuan also said, "I'll go with you."

Zhang's mother stayed in the car and helped Li Wenhui take care of the child.

But in the temple, Zhang's father and Zhang Yuan went with the village doctor to find doctors from other villages, but the answers they received were not optimistic.

"All the medicines are at the clinic. I don't have any here."

Because it had been raining heavily and the evacuation was notified in advance, most of the village doctors were packing up their things at home, and naturally they did not have time to bring any medicines with them when they evacuated.

However, many families nearby heard that their children were sick and dug out some fever-reducing drugs from their cars.

But the village doctors took a look and shook their heads, "This is for adults. The medicine is too strong and not suitable for children. It is generally not recommended."

"What should we do then?"

Hearing them talking, I knew there were sick children, and many people woke up. Every family has children, so even though the sick children had nothing to do with them, I felt particularly sympathetic when I heard them.

"Wasn't there medicine in the previous supply pack? Can't we use it?"

The village doctor shook his head and said, "No, those are basic medicines, none of which are suitable for children."

Someone grumbled quietly, "Who prepared all this supplies? They remembered to send milk powder, but forgot to put in some medicine for the baby."

"Well, having milk powder is good enough. No one can prepare it so comprehensively and take everything into consideration."

But there is no medicine right now, and no one can do anything.

Zhang's father and Zhang Yuan ran all over the temple and even knocked on the windows of every car, but they couldn't find any fever-reducing medicine suitable for the child.

The two stood at the temple gate, feeling anxious. Although the night wind was very cold, they were sweating profusely on their foreheads.

There is no medicine in the temple and I can’t get out. What should I do?

Zhang Yuan squatted down with his head in his hands, thinking of his wife's words, and regretted it in his heart, "If I had watched him a little longer in the afternoon, Xiaobao might not have had a fever."

"What's the point of saying this now?" Zhang's father said, "Instead of regretting it, it's better to think about a solution."

"Is it impossible without medicine? People in the past survived without it! Even though adult medicine isn't suitable, it doesn't mean they can't be taken at all. If that time comes..."

It should be okay to eat less.

Just as Mr. Zhang was about to say this, he saw a familiar villager coming over.

"Haven't you found the medicine yet?"

Father Zhang shook his head. "No, we asked families with children in several nearby villages, but they evacuated in such a hurry that no one took them."

"If you're looking for medicine, why not go to Weimin's house and ask? Their grandson is only a few years older than yours, and they might have some fever-reducing medicine in their car."

Zhang's father and Zhang Yuan's eyes lit up, "Yes, and there's also Weimin's (uncle) home!"

When they evacuated, they drove such a big car, so they must have brought a lot of things.

But when they looked around, they didn't see the familiar bus, and it was the villagers who explained it.

"Weimin and his family drove out and probably won't be back tonight. When we came back, they were still on their way down the mountain. You can go look for them."

"Thank you, thank you, that's a great help! We'll go right away."

With hope, the two did not delay. After expressing their gratitude, they hurried back to the car and prepared to drive down the mountain.

The car's taillights disappeared in the distance in a short while.

Twenty minutes later, Jiang Qian, who couldn't sleep to begin with, saw a dazzling light coming from a distance.

Then, there was a sound of knocking on the car door.

Huang Liping poured a cup of warm water from her thermos and handed it to Zhang's mother who was feeding medicine to her child.

Li Wenhui held the child in her arms and looked at him, who was still sick, with red eyes.

After the child took the medicine, the Zhang family did not plan to disturb him too much.

"Thank you, thank you, you've been a great help. If you didn't have the medicine, we wouldn't know what to do tonight!" Zhang Yuan took the child from his wife and thanked the Jiang family.

"We're all from the same village, so don't be polite. These are the leftovers from when Xiaobao was sick last time. There are only these two plates left." Ren Ru took a pair of scissors and cut off one-third of the medicine from a plate.

"Take these, the fever will go away after you eat them. I have to prepare the rest for Xiaobao."

Li Wenhui didn't expect Ren Ru to give her medicine. She was grateful, but they really needed it. For the sake of her child, she didn't refuse. She just kept saying thank you, "Thank you, thank you."

The family left quickly.

But after being woken up, the Jiang family members who stayed behind were no longer sleepy.

Huang Liping found the thick clothes for the whole family from the luggage bags piled up next to her, and took out two thicker quilts.

"From now on, keep yourself warm. If you get sick now, it will be very stressful."

Thinking of the child they had just seen, the whole family nodded. Jiang Mingchen was almost treated as a protected animal and was treated with caution by the whole family.

While everyone was talking, Jiang Qian quietly found a bottle of alcohol and sprayed it everywhere in the car.

The Jiang family did not take the unexpected visitor seriously, but they did not know that the temple was already in chaos.

When the Zhang family returned, most of the people staying in the temple had already gone to bed.

For fear of waking others and also worried about the children, Zhang Yuan parked the car outside the temple, and both Zhang's father and mother stayed in the car.

The family leaned on the car seat to rest, but they didn't expect that in the middle of the night, a scream suddenly came from the temple.

The whole family was woken up by the screams, and the sick child was frightened and started crying softly.

Mother Zhang frowned. "What happened? A snake got into the temple?"

The temple is located in a remote area, so there are indeed many snakes and rats. If you enter the main hall, you may get a fright. Zhang's mother has been sleeping on the floor in the temple for the past few days, and this is what she fears the most.

Zhang's father listened to the noise gradually coming from inside and became curious. "I guess so. You guys stay in the car, I'll go check it out."

Zhang Yuan yawned, "Dad, wait for me, I'll go too."

The two returned to the temple under the moonlight and saw that the door of one of the side halls was surrounded by people.

Father Zhang: "What happened? Is there a snake?"

The people gathered outside shook their heads. "I don't know either. We were woken up by that scream."

At this time, inside the side hall, there was chaos and disorder.

Some people were scrambling to get out with terrified looks on their faces, some were curious and wanted to enter the inner area, and some were explaining the situation to the people around them.

"The four of us were playing cards behind the Buddha statue. I needed to go to the bathroom, so I came out. When I came out, I saw Uncle Da Gen lying there. He didn't look well, and his face was red."

"There was a kid with a fever earlier, and I thought Uncle Da Gen had one too, so I wanted to wake him up and ask if he wanted some medicine. But before I could get a response, I saw his face slowly turning blue. I was just wondering what was going on when Li Qing, who was standing next to me, probably heard me calling him and woke up. She took one look and started screaming."

"What's going on? I don't know."

The man's voice was clearly confused as well. "I was going to ask her. Li Qing, Li Qing, what's your name?"

The girl mentioned next to him had a terrified expression, "Zombies, these are zombies... run away, run away..."

"What?"

Most of the people living in the main hall are elderly. "Zombies? Aren't those something that only exists after a person dies? Dagen is fine. He was even talking to me peacefully during dinner tonight. He's just sick. Why are you cursing at me, girl?"

But the girl just now didn't say a word, just shook her head, looked at the people around her with horror, and quickly slipped away from the crowd.

The elderly people didn't understand and were just angry, but someone understood what she said. They looked carefully at the person lying on the ground in front of them in the dim light, their faces full of horror.
