Chapter 68: Settlement (I)

Chapter 68: Settlement (I)

"Oh, don't get close! She'll bite you!"

After the boy comforted his sister, he opened the glass door leading to the second-floor terrace.

He tied the sheets of his home tightly together, just like he had seen on TV, tied them to the terrace railing, and let them hang down outside.

The length of the two sheets together was just enough to reach the ground. The boy pulled them hard, said hello to his sister who was hiding at the door, and slid down from the second floor along the sheets.

Although their family has always lived in Qixia Village, the land for building the villa was newly approved. His father, who is a businessman, even hired someone to calculate the feng shui before building the house here. Therefore, the villa is relatively far away from other houses in the village.

It usually looks a bit remote, but at this moment, this remoteness makes Chen Chen feel safer, so he doesn't have to worry about other mutants in and outside the yard besides Grandma Gui.

The door to the entrance hall on the first floor was locked properly. Grandma Gui must still be wandering around in the living room on the first floor, unable to come out.

He walked around the yard and looked at the surrounding environment through the iron fence. There was no danger outside the villa.

When passing the corner, they glanced at the corner and saw that the dozen or so strawberry plants they had planted with Grandma Gui had already produced red fruits.

He hesitated for a moment, then went to the tool shed next to him, took out a small basket, and picked all the strawberries. He saw some red tomatoes in the vegetable garden next to him, so he picked those too.

The kitchen at home was on the first floor, and he didn't dare go downstairs, so he could only pick some strawberries to fill his sister's stomach.

The bamboo basket, which was not big to begin with, was gradually filled up. He placed the basket under the terrace and was thinking of taking it upstairs with him when he heard the sound of a car passing by not far away.

He hid in a corner covered by the wall near the door and saw two army green cars approaching from a distance.

Seeing that reassuring color, he subconsciously came out from the corner where he was hiding and stood at the door.

The people on the off-road vehicle in front were the first to notice this exceptionally beautiful house built in the countryside.

Their team, consisting of twenty-five people, was formed and dispatched by City A's leaders after they learned of the news from City B. Their primary mission was to investigate the existence of a mysterious train near the yet-to-be-built airport. They were also responsible for finding a suitable route to the airport.

City A has a larger population than City B, and its city center has also fallen. Currently, all those who have safely evacuated are being housed in temporary bases.

This temporary base was originally an ancient tourist town built by City A. This town is located at the foot of the mountain, in a remote area, and was recently built. Although the infrastructure is complete, there are not many people, making it a perfect place to accommodate disaster victims.

However, the town's capacity is limited after all, so they must find other suitable places to build a resettlement center for the citizens. Just when the leaders of City A were worried about this, the call from City B came, and they remembered that there was such a vacant place in the city.

If a train is indeed discovered this time, then the plan to build a resettlement site there will be a logical progression. If there is no train, the city leaders will not let go of this vast and fertile land.

Before coming, the city leaders took time out of their busy schedules to hold a small meeting with their team, so they all knew the importance of their work.

They are trailblazers.

The young team member in the back seat of the off-road vehicle leaned back in his chair, stretched out one hand to ask his teammate next to him to help bandage his injury, while the other hand still held the gun tightly.

In the front passenger seat, Captain Zhang Chongguang was looking at a map of the area and giving directions to the driving team members.

"At this rate, we might be able to reach the airport tomorrow."

Under normal circumstances, it would not take so much time to get to the airport, but now, there are zombies in almost every village and town. Even along the way, some low-lying villages have not even had the floods receded, making them completely impassable, so they had to take a long detour.

Under various crises, delays in the journey are inevitable.

But even though the road was dangerous, they had already covered most of the distance in nearly twenty hours since they set out yesterday afternoon.

Thinking of the team members who had not rested all the way and even experienced several battles, Zhang Chongguang thought for a moment and said, "Let's find a place to rest and set off after noon."

While the mission is important, the safety of the team members cannot be neglected. The road ahead will be no less dangerous than the previous one, and we cannot allow the team members to embark on this journey exhausted.

As he spoke, he looked into the distance through the front car window. He was thinking about where to find a suitable place to rest when he saw the lonely villa.

Sleepiness brought a pillow, and Zhang Chongguang immediately said, "Drive to the villa and see if we can rest there."

The driving team member heard the order and turned the car around and drove to the branch road where the villa was located.

Only when they got closer did they realize there was a little boy behind the door.

Two cars stopped at the entrance of the villa. Zhang Chongguang got out first. Seeing the boy's calm expression, he softened his voice and asked, "Little boy, are the adults at home?"

Chen Chen glanced at the villa behind him and shook his head.

"Uncle, there are only me, my sister, and Grandma Gui at home, but Grandma Gui doesn't seem to recognize us. There are also many strange people in the village. Can you help us send Grandma Gui to the hospital?"

Hearing the child say this, Zhang Chongguang was stunned.

I originally saw that there were children and they seemed to be living a good life, so I thought there were adults in their family. However, I didn't expect that the only adult had already turned into a zombie.

"Then can you let us in to take a look?"

"OK."

Chen Chen nodded and was about to open the door for everyone, but suddenly remembered that the keys to the front door were in Grandma Gui's hands, and he hesitated for a moment.

"Grandma Gui keeps all the keys to the house. Why don't you wait a moment, uncle? I'll get them out."

The Grandma Gui that the child was talking about had obviously turned into a zombie, so Zhang Chongguang naturally would not let a child take such a risk.

"It's okay, we can get in without a key, just step back first."

Chen Chen took a few steps back as he was told. The next second, he saw his uncle take two steps back, suddenly kicked the ground, and his whole body flew up, instantly passing through the door of his house.

The people in the car behind had also gotten off. Zhang Chongguang asked three people to go with him and asked the rest to stay where they were. The four of them followed Chen Chen in.

The door to the entrance hall on the first floor was locked, and they couldn't get in. After knowing that Chen Chen came down from the second floor, they followed Chen Chen up to the second floor.

They brought a lot of tools with them, and even with Chen Chen in his arms, Zhang Chongguang easily climbed up to the second floor, and the people behind him followed closely.

Chen Ling heard some noise on the terrace in her room and thought it was her brother coming back. She ran to the window excitedly and saw several figures in uniform standing next to her brother.

"Brother, is this the police officer?"

Chen Chen didn't know what the difference was between Zhang Chongguang and his group and the police, but his unconcealable righteous aura made him feel at ease.

"Yes, it's the police. They're here to help us." Chen Chen said to his sister, "Just stay here for a while. I'll take the police downstairs and be back soon."

"good."

Chen Ling nodded obediently, and Zhang Chongguang also winked at a team member behind him, indicating that he should stay and look after the little girl.

After Chen Chen instructed his sister, he opened the door and led Zhang Chongguang and the other two into the corridor.

Although the country villa is not big, it has very good lighting. Even the darkest corridor in the middle of the house looks very bright.

Chen Chen walked in front and introduced quietly, "There are only three of us at home, my sister, Grandma Gui, and I. My sister and I usually live upstairs, and Grandma Gui lives downstairs. Ever since the night the rain stopped, something has been wrong with Grandma Gui."

"I called outside, but couldn't get through."

Zhang Chongguang looked at the boy and stopped beside a wooden bookshelf while speaking.

Before he could react, the boy in front of him moved the wooden bookcase away with both hands, and a passage leading downstairs suddenly appeared in the place where it was moved.

"This is the staircase leading to the first floor. Grandma Gui wanted to come up before, but I was afraid she would hurt my sister, so I blocked the staircase."

Zhang Chongguang and his team's eyes were still on the wooden bookcase that had been moved away. The two team members in the back row even wiped the bookcase with their hands to confirm the material.

But they didn't remain surprised for long, as they had to turn their attention back downstairs because everyone heard the increasingly clear sound of footsteps approaching.

Zhang Chongguang didn't say anything. He looked at his two teammates and quietly went down the stairs.

Chen Chen originally wanted to catch up, but was stopped by the team member who was left behind. The team member made a booing gesture at him and stood guard at the stairs with him.

A few minutes later, a chaotic sound came from downstairs, and then the sound calmed down, leaving only bursts of fierce and helpless roars.

After the team members going downstairs made a gesture at the stairs, the remaining team members took Chen Chen downstairs.

After many days, Chen Chen saw the appearance of his living room again.

The living room, which had been clean and tidy, was now a mess. Broken porcelain pieces had been left all over the floor without anyone noticing. The wild flowers in the vase on the coffee table had long since withered, and the trash can was filled with a sour, fermented smell.

Their amiable Grandma Gui was tied tightly to a chair in the dining room with a rope, and was yelling at the two people who were cleaning in the living room.

"Grandma Gui..."

Just as Chen Chen was about to take two steps forward, he was stopped by the people around him.

"Oh, don't get close! She'll bite you!"

When Zhang Chongguang heard the sound, he handed the broom in his hand to his teammate, walked up to him and squatted down.

"Little boy, I haven't asked you what your name is yet?"

Chen Chen withdrew his gaze from Grandma Gui and answered, holding back tears, "Chen Chen, Erdong Chen, the morning."

"Okay, Chen Chen, right? Now that there's no one else at home, you're the head of the family, so uncle has something to explain to you."

Zhang Chongguang didn’t know whether the child in front of him could understand what he said, but he didn’t want to hurt his relatives without the child’s knowledge.

He told the child about the zombies in a language he could understand and asked for his opinion.

After hearing this, Chen Chen turned around and glanced at the elderly woman in the chair. His voice choked with sobs, "So, there's no way Grandma Gui can be cured?"

Zhang Chongguang didn't want to extinguish the child's hope, but he had to tell the truth.

"Yes, at the moment we have no way..."

As he spoke, he couldn't bear to look at the child's injured eyes.
