Ten days passed swiftly, thanks to the constant temperature and humidity in the greenhouse and the nourishment from the drip irrigation system.
That morning, Old Man Sun was the first to enter the shed, and immediately burst into a thunderous exclamation:
"It's cooked! It's cooked! Fairy! The vegetables are cooked!!"
Whoosh!
Everyone dropped what they were doing and rushed frantically toward the enormous, transparent palace!
Push open the shed door.
A richer, more concentrated air, a mixture of earthy, fresh sap, and the unique fragrance of plants, wafted towards us!
The sight that came into view left everyone speechless!
The lush green carpet of seedlings has now transformed into a verdant green ocean!
These "abundant and fast-growing" vegetables demonstrate their amazing vitality!
Chinese cabbage: The leaves are large and thick, wrapped in layers, and are emerald green. Each head is as big as a millstone and weighs heavily on the ridge!
Radish: Beneath the bright red and white radish leaves is a radish body, half of which protrudes from the soil and is as thick as a child's arm!
Spinach: The leaves are dark green and broad, growing densely together, almost covering the ground!
There are also various other fast-growing vegetables: crisp celery, crunchy cucumbers, round tomatoes, green and red interspersed... The whole greenhouse is full of vitality and laden with fruit! Every vegetable is exceptionally strong and large, far exceeding people's expectations!
"Good heavens... this... this isn't a vegetable... this must be some kind of magical herb!" A man looked at the cabbage, which was bigger than his head, his voice trembling.
"I've lived for decades... and I've never seen such a big radish!" Old Sun squatted on the ground, stroking a thick white radish, his beard trembling with excitement.
"The Fairy Maiden possesses divine powers! The Fairy Maiden is benevolent!" The crowd erupted once again in fervent cheers and shouts of awe!
Looking at the bountiful harvest on the greenhouse, Jiang Chan felt a great sense of accomplishment. "Don't just stand there! Get to work! Harvest everything you can!"
At a command, the crowd surged into the vegetable patch as if they had been injected with adrenaline!
Click! Click!
The crisp sound of vegetable stalks breaking echoed throughout the room.
The heavy cabbages were carefully cut down.
The thick radish was pulled out with force.
The tender spinach was cut off in bunches...
The joy of harvest was evident on everyone's faces and hands. Soon, the picked vegetables piled up into small green hills in the open spaces between the fields, exuding a rich sense of life and the fragrance of a bountiful harvest.
Looking at these "mountains of vegetables," new worries appeared on people's faces.
"Fairy...so many vegetables...how are we going to store them? Even though it's getting cooler, they'll wilt soon..."
"Yeah, we need to eat quickly... but we can't possibly finish this much..."
Jiang Chan said calmly, "Pile them up in that open space over there, and make sure they're neatly stacked."
The crowd, not understanding why, obediently carried all the picked vegetables to a designated flat area outside the shed, carefully stacking them neatly to form a larger, green "hill".
Jiang Chan walked to the "vegetable mountain" and, under the watchful eyes of everyone who held their breath, stretched out her right hand and gently brushed the large leaves of the top layer of cabbage.
Whoosh!
It was like a magic trick!
The mountain of vegetables vanished without a trace right before everyone's eyes! Only the compacted soil remained!
Dead silence!
Absolute silence!
Everyone seemed to be frozen in place, stuck in a motionless or staring posture, their mouths agape enough to fit an egg! Their eyes were practically bulging out of their sockets!
Telekinesis! They've seen it before.
Creation out of thin air! They've seen it before.
But this… makes a “mountain” disappear with a wave of the hand?! This is no longer magic! It is… it is a divine power that controls the universe!
"Where are the vegetables?!" Old Sun's voice cracked.
“I’ve put it away.” Jiang Chan said calmly, as if she had done something insignificant. “It’s in a safe place and won’t spoil. I can take it out anytime I want to eat it.”
She paused, looking at the still stunned expressions on everyone's faces, and added, "Starting today, we'll have two meals a day. Rice and vegetables are all you can eat."
Two meals?!
"All-you-can-eat rice?! All-you-can-eat vegetables?!"
The overwhelming joy instantly dispelled the stunned silence! The crowd erupted once more! Cheers, sobs, and shouts of homage to Jiang Chan echoed along the riverbank!
People who have been starving crave food to the core! Two meals a day! Enough to eat! This is a life of paradise that they could only dream of! And all of this was bestowed upon them by this "fairy maiden" who could control the universe with a wave of her hand!
With a sufficient food supply, life on the riverbank finally settled down.
Two hot meals a day, accompanied by fresh, juicy, and plentiful vegetables, quickly restored the pallor of famine to everyone's faces, giving them a rosy glow. With renewed energy, smiles became more frequent.
In the evening, everyone sat around in the open space outside to rest. After eating and drinking their fill, their stomachs were full, and their conversation was no longer limited to their current work.
“When I… when I came out, my mother was sick… I didn’t know…” A man lowered his head and poked the ground with a tree branch.
"My kid... he's growing every day, he's probably as tall as the stove now..."
"I don't know if my family's land still exists..."
A low murmur arose, filled with worry and longing for loved ones far away. The atmosphere grew somewhat somber.
Old Man Sun sighed, "Alas... in these days... just being alive is difficult enough... if it weren't for the fairy maiden taking me in..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but everyone understood what he meant. Their survival and ability to eat were already an immense blessing and a miracle! How could they dare to hope for more?
