Jiang Chan led Xiao Tao, winding her way through the dilapidated alleys, deliberately choosing the quietest and most deserted paths.
She had no destination in mind; she just wanted to find the most inconspicuous corner to settle down temporarily, and then devour a large meal of meat from the space!
Finally, at the end of a narrow alley that could barely accommodate one person, we found a small shop with a shabby "Fulai Inn" sign.
The door was crooked and the window paper was torn; it looked even worse than the shady "Welcome Guests" establishment from last night.
This is it!
The more worn and inconspicuous the better!
Jiang Chan spent ten copper coins to book the cheapest room, the one furthest inside.
The bed in the room was as hard as a rock.
But Jiang Chan didn't care. After dismissing the waiter, she eagerly took out a still-warm scallion pancake from her spatial storage and handed it to Xiao Tao, saying, "Are you hungry? Eat up!"
He took out a pancake for himself, ready to tear it open and enjoy it.
"Cough! Cough cough cough!"
A heart-wrenching, violent cough, as if it were about to tear out one's lungs, came through the thin wall from the next room with extreme clarity!
One sound after another! Incessant! Especially jarring in the quiet environment!
Jiang Chan paused, her hand holding the pancake still, her brows furrowing deeply. This place had terrible soundproofing!
"Cough cough! Ugh... cough cough cough..."
The cough turned into dry heaving, which was enough to send chills down anyone's spine.
Jiang Chan stood up irritably. "Xiao Tao, you keep eating. I'll go downstairs and see if I can get a different room."
She simply couldn't stand the noise.
Downstairs at the counter, the drowsy shopkeeper waved his hand impatiently, "Change rooms? Girl! What kind of fancy place do you think this is? There are only two rooms, and they're all the same!"
Jiang Chan: "..."
She returned to her room with a dark expression.
The coughing from next door subsided slightly, but turned into heavy, painful panting.
Before it had even stopped for long, the coughing started again.
The sound was like a dull knife cutting into flesh, drilling into the ears and making one dizzy.
Xiao Tao huddled in the tent in the middle of the room, her little hands clutching the thin blanket tightly, her eyes filled with fear. "Sister Jiang... the uncle next door is coughing so badly..."
"Don't listen, zip it up, go to sleep."
...
As dawn broke, the coughing from next door stopped.
Dead silence.
A more unsettling deathly silence.
Jiang Chan had just opened the door to go out.
Creak—the door next to it opened at the same time.
"Miss Jiang, you're here too?!" A familiar and delighted voice rang out at the same time!
It's Chen Yan!
"How could it be you?!" Jiang Chan blurted out, her voice filled with barely suppressed frustration and disbelief!
She clearly chose the opposite direction! How could we run into each other like this?!
A powerful sense of absurdity struck her hard!
What a damn coincidence! And that male lead who's always haunting me!
Is the plot of this broken world so cruel that it's impossible for her and him to be bound together?!
The sense of security brought by the two mountains of grain and meat in the space was instantly shattered by Chen Yan's face!
Just then.
Clang! Clang!
Suddenly, a loud banging came from downstairs at the inn!
"Open the door! It's the government!"
"Everyone stay where you are! Don't move!"
A series of harsh roars and heavy footsteps surged up like thunder!
"Ah! What are you doing!"
"Sir! Spare my life!"
The screams and cries of other tenants downstairs were filled with terror!
Jiang Chan and Chen Yan's expressions changed drastically!
Several constables dressed in black robes with their faces covered in thick cotton cloth rushed in, brandishing sticks!
The strong smell of lime powder instantly filled the air!
"Don't move!"
The lead officer shouted sternly, "An epidemic has broken out! Take them all away! To the quarantine area!"
"Let us go!"
Chen Yan raised his hand to stop the officials who were about to grab him.
"You're asking for death!" A burly officer next to him swung a stick and smashed it down on him!
Chen Yan had no choice but to dodge to the side!
Taking advantage of this brief moment, another officer roughly reached out and grabbed Xiao Tao, who was standing next to Jiang Chan!
"Get out of the way!" Jiang Chan, like a mother wolf protecting her cubs, unleashed astonishing strength, pulling Xiao Tao back sharply to dodge the hand. Her scarlet eyes glared intently at the officers who rushed in. "Stop!"
"You've gone too far!" The burly officer raised his stick again when he saw that she still dared to resist!
Jiang Chan suddenly turned to the side, her movement as fast as lightning!
His right hand, like an iron clamp, precisely gripped the wrist of the officer who was reaching out!
"Ugh—!" The officer was caught off guard and felt a piercing pain and an electric shock-like numbness shoot straight from his wrist to his head!
With a scream, the stick in his hand clattered to the ground!
"court death!"
"Take her down!"
The other officers were both shocked and furious, and brandishing their clubs, they were about to pounce on them!
"Stop!" Jiang Chan shouted sharply! Her cold gaze swept over the officers rushing towards her. "I'll go with you."
Jiang Chan's voice returned to its stagnant calm, as if the fierce attack had never happened.
She pulled Xiao Tao closer to her, "Don't touch her, I'll walk by myself."
The officer, whose strength had been squeezed out, clutched his wrist, his face ashen, gasping for breath in pain. He stared at Jiang Chan with a mixture of fear and resentment, but dared not approach her again.
The leading officer stared intently at Jiang Chan for a few seconds, then glanced at his subordinate who was grimacing in pain, and finally snorted heavily, "You're smart to know what's good for you! Take him away!"
He waved his hand, stopping his men from forcibly pulling him away, and simply pointed the stick at the door, his eyes full of warning.
We left the dilapidated and gloomy inn.
The dim light of the early morning was so bright it made one's eyes blurry.
However, the scene on the street was even more chilling!
