Chapter 2

Wu Aiguo, the daughter-in-law next door, had just given birth and was in her postpartum confinement period. She heard a baby calling for her mother-in-law, though not very clearly. Just then, she saw her mother-in-law come in carrying two babies under her arms, put them on the kang (heated brick bed), and then quickly roll up the bedding she had used for the first two weeks after giving birth, preparing to leave. Seeing her mother-in-law rushing around, Wu Aiguo quickly called out to her to stop.

"Mom, what happened? What are you doing with this? Is someone about to give birth?"

“That damned Cai Shufen next door came with her family and took away Mingshan’s pension. I saw that their belongings were ransacked, so they must have taken quite a lot. They also searched Qiaoya’s room thoroughly and even beat her up. I need to call the brigade leader to take Qiaoya to the hospital in a tractor and call the police. This is for Qiaoya to put on the tractor.”

When Wu Aiguo heard that Wu Qiaoqiao, a fellow educated youth sent to the countryside and also her husband's cousin's wife, had been injured, she stopped talking to her mother-in-law and instead told her to quickly find the brigade leader to take Wu Qiaoqiao to the hospital. After all, Wu Qiaoqiao was heavily pregnant with twins, and if anything happened to her, it would be a tragedy for all three of them. She also said that she would take care of the two children in Mingshan's family.

My second aunt put down what she was carrying at the door and ran towards the field, calling out the team leader's name as she ran. Everyone was busy in the field at that moment, and they heard someone calling out the team leader's name and the tractor driver's name. Everyone straightened up and looked over, chatting amongst themselves.

"What happened? I think I heard Cuihua's voice. What was she shouting?"

"Yes, I heard it. It sounded like someone was in trouble. Oh no, I heard it clearly this time. It sounded like she said Mingfeng's wife was beaten up."

"What?! Which bastard dares to hit a woman from our village? And isn't Mingfeng's wife several months pregnant? Aren't they afraid of killing her at this time?"

At this moment, everyone clearly heard what Second Aunt, Zhou Cuihua, was shouting, and hurriedly ran towards the ridge of the field. The team leader Liu Youliang and the team's tractor driver, who was also the accountant's son Liu Mancang, ran in the lead and soon met Zhou Cuihua who was running towards them. One called her Youfu's wife, and the other called her Aunt Cuihua, asking what had happened.

Zhou Cuihua quickly explained the reason, which everyone already knew. The captain then instructed Liu Mancang to start the tractor. He, along with his wife, eldest daughter-in-law, and seven other men (excluding Liu Mancang), were to see if they could spot those three bastards on the way to the hospital. If they did, they were to take them directly to the police station.

Soon everyone ran to Wu Qiaoqiao's house. As soon as they entered, they saw Wu Qiaoqiao lying on the ground with blood on her head and body, and the yard was in a mess. From the open door, they could see that the room was also a mess. Because the tractor had not yet arrived, everyone was waiting for the tractor while cursing those three bastards.

During this time, Wu Qiaoqiao told the captain that if the police came to the house to collect evidence, the captain should tell the police that there was a small, long wooden box in the back compartment of the kang cabinet, containing several letters sent by Liu Mingfeng that the police might need. The captain should let the police know. Liu Youliang nodded and told Wu Qiaoqiao to stop talking and rest. Wu Qiaoqiao obediently closed her eyes.

Soon the sound of a tractor came from outside. Everyone quickly and quietly lifted Wu Qiaoqiao onto the mattress that Zhou Cuihua had taken out and placed on the tractor. Then they took the people they were going to take with them onto the tractor. Zhou Cuihua saw this and also ran onto the tractor. After all, this was her nephew's wife. After getting on the tractor, she turned around and instructed her eldest daughter-in-law, Zhou Hongxia, who shared the same surname as her, to take good care of her sister-in-law and the children at home.

Zhou Hongxia didn't object to her mother-in-law's instructions. After all, according to seniority, she should call Zhou Cuihua "aunt," and the two were from the same village. Moreover, Zhou Cuihua had treated her very well since she married into the family, so she was quite willing to take care of her sister-in-law. Although her sister-in-law was a sent-down youth, she didn't look down on them, and the two sisters-in-law got along very well.

As the tractor sputtered away into the distance, everyone, led by their respective team leaders, went back to work in the fields. While working, they also chatted about Wu Qiaoqiao and her sister-in-law, Cai Shufen.

When the tractor was halfway to the brigade leader's location, they saw three people riding two bicycles ahead. Cai Shufen was riding her mother's old bicycle with her, while her younger brother was riding the new bicycle they had taken from the Liu family. In addition, her mother's hands and the back of her brother's bicycle were tied with a lot of things.

The three men turned around when they heard the sound of a tractor behind them. Their expressions changed drastically. They recognized it as the tractor from Liujiatun. When they saw the faces of the old and young men who appeared from behind the tractor, they knew that their despicable deeds had been discovered. Then, the people on the tractor saw Cai Shufen's mother patting her back vigorously. Even before they could hear the old woman's voice, they knew she was urging Cai Shufen to get up quickly. Meanwhile, Cai Shufen's younger brother's two thin legs were moving around like wheels of fire.

However, no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't outrun the tractor. Soon, the tractor overtook the three of them. After the tractor stopped, the men jumped off and beat Cai Shufen's younger brother, Cai Dabao. Because the men of the Red Flag Brigade didn't hit women, no one hit Cai Shufen and her daughter. However, although the men didn't hit them, it didn't mean the women couldn't. Zhou Cuihua, the brigade leader's wife, Ma Daya, and Ma Daya's daughter-in-law, Qian Meimei, held down the two women and slapped them repeatedly until the mother and daughter couldn't even recognize each other.

Seeing that their men had beaten the three men to a pulp, the captain ordered everyone to quickly put the three men onto the tractor, along with the two bicycles and their cargo. After all, they needed to get Wu Qiaoqiao to the hospital as soon as possible, since she had already passed out.

What people don't know is that Wu Qiaoqiao was genuinely unconscious, but she controlled it herself. After all, her healing ability wasn't for nothing. Although her ability wasn't strong at the moment, saving her life and healing her injuries was a piece of cake. The reason she fainted now was simply to give those three people a little more punishment, since injuring someone and attempted murder are different crimes.
