The next day, a jeep was parked outside the Liaoning Provincial Railway Station. A middle-aged man was leaning against the jeep door. This man was Zhang Jianjun. He had received a call from the regimental commander of Liu Mingfeng's unit, who said that they were arriving today and asked him to help pick them up. So he drove the police station's car early that day and waited outside the railway station.
When Zhang Jianjun was leaning against the door and smoking, a train from Beijing to Liaoning Province stopped at the station. The people on the train got off in a hurry. Among them was a handsome man carrying a large package on his back and two in his hands. He walked out of the station with the crowd. When he stood at the door of the train station and looked around, his eyes suddenly lit up because he saw Zhang Jianjun leaning against the door.
Upon seeing Zhang Jianjun, the man immediately rushed over to him. Zhang Jianjun also sensed someone standing in front of him and looked up to see the man. Judging from the man's demeanor, he was a soldier. He had sharp eyebrows, bright eyes, healthy bronze skin, and a well-proportioned, strong build.
When the man saw Zhang Jianjun look up, he quickly stood at attention, saluted him, and then introduced himself.
"Hello, comrade. I'm Feng Minghao, an active-duty soldier in the XX Corps. Can I ask you something?"
When Zhang Junjun heard the man's introduction, he felt that it sounded very familiar. Then he remembered that Liu Mingfeng's cousin seemed to be called Feng Mingran, so he asked Feng Minghao.
"Hello, comrade. I'm Zhang Jianjun. May I ask what your relationship is with Feng Mingran?"
When Feng Minghao heard his brother's name, he immediately answered Zhang Jianjun. After hearing this, Zhang Jianjun patted Feng Minghao on the shoulder.
"So you're Mingfeng's cousin. You're here to visit your brother, right? Let's not talk too much for now. We're all family. I'm Mingfeng's old squad leader. I'm here to pick him up. Put your bag on the bus first, and we'll go to the station together later."
"Is cousin Mingfeng back too? I'm not here to see my brother this time. I'm here to see cousin Mingfeng's wife on behalf of my mother."
Hearing this, Zhang Jianjun was about to ask them how they knew when they heard the train whistle arriving at the station. He quickly helped Feng Minghao stuff his three packages onto the train and then pulled him towards the train station.
"Let's go, let's talk later. Mingfeng's train has arrived. Let's go in and pick them up. They are in the sleeper car."
After hearing this, Feng Minghao followed Zhang Jianjun and ran into the station.
Before the train arrived at the station, Liu Mingfeng and Liu Xiaobao had already tidied up the things on the table and taken the packages down to the ground. However, they were not in a hurry and planned to wait until everyone else got off the train before they went down. While they were waiting for everyone to get off, they heard a shout coming from outside the train.
"Liu Mingfeng, Liu Mingfeng"
The two people poked their heads out of the window and looked around. They saw two people running towards them, calling out Liu Mingfeng's name as they ran. Liu Mingfeng immediately recognized the person in front as Zhang Jianjun. He couldn't see the other person clearly because he was too far away. But when they got closer, he realized that it was Feng Minghao, the eldest son of his aunt Feng Mengmeng. So he waved to the window and called out the names of the two people.
Hearing the shout, the two ran over and stood by the window. Before Feng Minghao could greet his cousin, Zhang Jianjun spoke.
"Mingfeng, how many packages do you have? Come down from this window quickly."
When Liu Xiaobao saw that it was someone his brother knew and heard what the people outside the window said, he immediately pushed the two large packages and two small packages on the car down through the window. After the packages were pushed down, he turned around and carried Liu Mingfeng on his back and walked outside. In this way, they didn't have to wait for the conductor to help. Originally, two conductors came when the train was about to arrive at the station. Their intention was to wait until everyone got off and then they would come to help Liu Mingfeng.
Seeing his cousin being carried out of the carriage, Feng Minghao quickly greeted Zhang Jianjun, meaning that Zhang Jianjun was watching the packages downstairs while he went up to help. After saying this, he ran towards the train carriage door.
When Liu Xiaobao was carrying Liu Mingfeng halfway down the train, Feng Minghao arrived. The two of them then escorted Liu Mingfeng off the train. After getting off, Liu Mingfeng asked Liu Xiaobao to put him down. After Liu Mingfeng was put down, Zhang Jianjun and Feng Minghao both went up and hugged him. When Zhang Jianjun hugged Liu Mingfeng, he patted his back and said something.
"It's good that you're back, it's good that you're back. Now that you're safe and sound, your wife has someone to rely on."
After releasing Liu Mingfeng, Zhang Jianjun looked at the two large packages on the ground again.
"Mingfeng, what's in these two packages? Why are they so big? But they're not that heavy."
"These two packages look big, but they mainly contain two military overcoats. The rest were gifts from my comrades."
Zhang Jianjun: "Okay, then let's not talk about it. Let's take the things outside and go home."
After saying that, he took the lead, picked up two large packages and walked outside. Liu Xiaobao was about to carry Liu Mingfeng on his back but Feng Minghao got there first. Seeing this, Liu Xiaobao could only pick up the two small packages on the ground and followed Feng Minghao.
After everyone got in the car, Zhang Jianjun started the car and drove towards the county town. In the car, Liu Mingfeng introduced the two people to Liu Xiaobao, and also introduced Liu Xiaobao to the two people.
"Xiao Bao, this is Zhang Jianjun, my older brother's former squad leader. You can call him Brother Jun. This is my aunt's son. You can call him Brother Hao. Squad leader, Ming Hao. This is my younger brother whom I met in the army. His name is Liu Xiaobao."
When Zhang Jianjun and the other man heard that Liu Mingfeng recognized his younger brother, they hurriedly asked about Liu Xiaobao's situation. After learning that Liu Xiaobao was an orphan who had grown up relying on the kindness of others, they told Liu Xiaobao not to be shy and to make himself at home.
Zhang Jianjun also took out a package and gave it to Liu Mingfeng. When Liu Mingfeng opened it, he found that it contained a large bag of White Rabbit milk candy, two malted milks, and even a bag of milk powder which is hard to buy nowadays. He hurriedly asked what was going on and why they were giving him these things. Zhang Jianjun told him the reason for giving him these things.
“My sister-in-law was injured and hospitalized. It should have been your sister-in-law who went to see her, but she took the children back to her hometown to visit their grandparents. As a grown man, it wasn’t appropriate for me to go to the hospital to see my sister-in-law. So, since you’re back now, I’ve prepared these things for you to take back with you.”
"Squad leader, you don't have to be so polite. There's no need to buy so many things. It's too expensive."
"No need, no need. These aren't for you, they're for your younger brother and sister-in-law and the children. A grown man shouldn't be so fussy."
Seeing this, Liu Mingfeng had no choice but to accept the gifts. However, he also made up his mind that while he was recuperating at home, he would look for wild game in the mountains and if he found any, he would hunt some and send it to Zhang Jianjun's family. After all, his family was not well-off, and they not only needed to eat and drink, but also needed to send money back to their hometown to support their parents in their old age.
