Chapter 31

Liu Mingfeng knew that three people had come in. One of them was Lin Yuwei, but he didn't know who the other two were. As the door opened, he saw Lin Yuwei walking in front, followed by an older man and a middle-aged man. When Zhao Xiuxiang saw the two of them come in, she quickly went forward to greet them.

"Old Hua, Brother Wei, what brings you here at this hour?"

Upon hearing Zhao Xiuxiang's question, both men waved their hands. The middle-aged man, whom Zhao Xiuxiang called Brother Wei, answered her question first. He was handsome and refined, wearing glasses, but the glasses were clearly tied up with something on the temples, so they must be broken.

“Sister-in-law Xiuxiang, we were all very worried when Qiaoqiao had her accident the other day. We heard that she was back today, so my grandfather and I came to see her. There were other people who wanted to come, but even though your house is at the foot of the mountain, it wouldn’t be good if too many people came and were seen by others. So it was just the two of us who came.”

While the two were talking, the old man called Grandpa Hua went straight to the bedside. He first looked at Liu Mingfeng, who was sitting on the edge of the bed with his hands and feet in casts, and then walked to Wu Qiaoqiao, who was lying on the bed with her hands outstretched, and took her pulse.

When Liu Mingfeng saw the old man walk over to Wu Qiaoqiao and take her pulse, he was a little nervous, afraid that the old man might find something unusual. He knew the old man because he was a comrade-in-arms of the original owner's parents, uncles, and aunts.

The old man's name was Huasheng, a homophone for peanut. Because his family had always been a single-lineage line, his family named him Huasheng, which means "many sons and many blessings," hoping that he would have many brothers. Perhaps it was because of this good name that he did have many brothers in his generation. He had three brothers from the same mother, and several half-brothers from different mothers.

Grandpa Hua Sheng comes from a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. When the war began, he resolutely joined the army and saved countless lives in the rear. The reason he appeared in Liujiatun was because during this chaotic period, those who had saved him and were now in high positions sent him here to be demoted in order to protect him. He knew that the middle-aged man was also a demoted person, but he didn't recognize him. However, judging from how familiar Zhao Xiuxiang was with him, they must be acquaintances.

Sure enough, when Hua Lao was taking Wu Qiaoqiao's pulse, Zhao Xiuxiang introduced this guy to Liu Mingfeng. This guy was named Wei Songbai. He was a friend of Wu Qiaoqiao's parents. They had studied abroad together and returned. Wu Qiaoqiao's parents went to work at a research institute, while he went to teach at Kyoto University. He was sent down to Liujiatunzi because his students reported him. In order not to drag his wife and children down, Wei Songbai cut off his relationship with them.

After Wu Qiaoqiao's parents passed away, Wei Songbai took care of the three elderly people and Wu Qiaoqiao. In fact, Wei Songbai and his wife even recognized Wu Qiaoqiao as their goddaughter. When Wu Qiaoqiao's grandmother and maternal grandmother passed away, it was also the couple who helped.

Wu Qiaoqiao only knew that her grandfather had been sent down to the countryside before he passed away, but she didn't know where he had been sent. When she came here and saw Wei Songbai, the two of them reconnected. Wu Qiaoqiao often secretly sent Wei Songbai some food and supplies. At first, she kept it a secret from the Liu family, but later she found out that the Liu family had been taking care of those who had been sent down to the countryside and lived in cowsheds.

So, after Wu Qiaoqiao became pregnant and her belly grew big, Zhao Xiuxiang would occasionally bring Wei Songbai along when she delivered things to the people in the cowshed. After Zhao Xiuxiang finished introducing him, Liu Mingfeng saw Wei Songbai looking at him with a critical eye, knowing that a father-in-law would inevitably become more and more critical of his son-in-law.

At this moment, Hua Lao put down his hand that was taking Wu Qiaoqiao's pulse, and then walked to Liu Mingfeng's side and asked him to extend his hand. He then took Liu Mingfeng's pulse carefully. After taking Liu Mingfeng's pulse, Hua Lao sat down on the stool next to him.

As soon as Zhao Xiuxiang saw Hua Lao sit down, she immediately asked about the two people.

"Mr. Hua, how are the two children doing? Should we prescribe some medicine for them to recuperate?"

"Both children are doing well. As for Qiaoqiao, the priority now is to prevent her from getting hurt again, otherwise it will be dangerous when she gives birth. I won't prescribe any more medicine, since all medicines have some side effects and are not good for her or the baby. As for Mingfeng, I will prescribe some medicine for him to help him recover faster."

Upon hearing what Elder Hua said, Liu Mingfeng quickly pointed to the plaster cast on his body and asked Elder Hua.

"Grandpa Hua, can we remove this cast? Would it be okay to put on a splint after removing the cast? It's really inconvenient with it in this cast."

Upon hearing Liu Mingfeng's words, Elder Hua got up and walked over to Liu Mingfeng, reaching out to pinch his injured area. Although it was inconvenient because of the cast, since he came from a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, he must have some real skills. After a careful examination, Elder Hua sat back down in his original position.

"Yes, this cast can be removed. I'll come and remove it for you tomorrow. I think the little girl is asleep, so we don't want to wake her up with the noise of removing the cast. After the cast is removed, we'll put a splint on you. Here are two prescriptions for you, one for internal use and one for external application. Find someone to get the herbs for me. I'll personally boil the ointment for you. Change it every two days."

When the old man came to examine him, Liu Mingfeng used his mental power to guide the examination slightly, so that the old man would think he was still injured and would not know that his injury had actually healed. He was very happy when he heard the old man say that the cast could be removed, because he would probably have to go up the mountain every day in the future, and it was really inconvenient to have a cast on.

"Thank you, Grandpa Hua. Please write down the prescription. I'll ask Tan Jing to go to town to get the medicine for me tomorrow."

Grandpa Hua nodded in agreement. He knew Tan Jing; he had connections and could get things from the black market, so sometimes villagers would ask him for help when they didn't have ration coupons. However, before writing the prescription, Grandpa Hua asked Tan Jing to prepare another prescription for him to get more medicine. Apparently, someone in the cowshed was sick, and although Liu Ercheng had sent them medicine, they hadn't recovered.

After Grandpa Hua finished writing the prescription, Zhao Xiuxiang saw the two out. However, before leaving, she brought out two dishes from the kitchen. These were specially cooked for the people in the cowshed that evening, because Zhao Xiuxiang knew that when Wu Qiaoqiao returned today, someone would definitely come to see her, at the very least Grandpa Hua would come.

Grandpa Hua and Wei Songbai carried the two bowls of food out of Liu's house and headed towards the cowshed. However, they took a more secluded route to avoid people from the village who might come out at night. They didn't really care about the villagers; everyone just kept quiet about it. It was mainly the educated youth who were concerned.

If they take these two dishes back, the people in the cowshed can have a couple of good meals again.
