After dinner, Jiang Feng and Su Xue went to the rooftop to cool off. The scorching weather seemed to have remained constant since the apocalypse. Not even a breeze, let alone rain, hadn't blown. If it weren't for the pressure well behind the house that could pump groundwater, Jiang Feng might have moved.
Sitting on the edge of the roof, Su Xue leaned against Jiang Feng and told her story.
Just as she said, kids nowadays know a lot and like to compete with each other, but she stands out at school and has no interest in those kids' games.
She was extremely smart since she was a child and entered junior high school at the age of ten. Compared with her peers, she preferred to sit alone in one place and daydream, liked to walk to the Green Grass Lake, and also liked to tease the black cat at her grandmother's house.
The school was on summer vacation, she had few friends in the city, and her parents were busy with work, so she came to her grandmother's house in the countryside.
She quite likes this place and runs around here all day, playing in the mud and catching grasshoppers like a country kid.
But suddenly one day, when she was playing outside, it started to rain heavily, so she hurried back home.
But after returning home, she found herself terribly cold and fainted as soon as she climbed into bed.
When she woke up, she found herself extremely hungry. She still shudders when she thinks of that feeling.
So she opened the door and went downstairs to look for food, but just as she reached the first floor hall, she saw her grandmother, her face pale and her expression ferocious, rushing towards her. At this time, she was stunned, not knowing why her always kind grandmother had become like this, and could only scream to vent her fear.
But after screaming, she found her grandmother lying on the ground. She had no idea what was going on. She was just even hungrier and her body was extremely weak. Instinct drove her to drag her body to find food.
Everything happened so fast that I didn't even have time to be sad. I had finally finished my meal when I heard a loud banging sound outside the door.
She was so scared that she didn't dare to open the door. She thought it was the police coming to arrest her, so she quickly hid upstairs.
After an unknown amount of time, the knocking on the door stopped, and she was hungry and cold.
Finally, she couldn't stand it anymore and started looking for food in all the rooms upstairs. Finally, she finished eating everything she could and went downstairs to find something else to eat. But when she saw her grandmother's almost rotting body, she was frightened again. After a violent struggle, driven by hunger, she covered her grandmother's body with a quilt, constantly deceiving herself that her grandmother was asleep, and constantly convincing herself that it was not her fault and that she really just screamed.
Finally, she moved all the food and drink upstairs and never went downstairs again. It must have been three days when she noticed the zombies roaming outside. The sight from the window terrified her. No matter what it was, as long as it was alive, the zombies would pounce on it, bite it, and devour it.
Even the kitten that went out to find food was bitten on its hind legs, and soon after it escaped back, it turned into a zombie cat. Su Xue finally gritted her teeth and killed the kitten that had just turned into a zombie, and then threw the body into another room.
As time went by, the food became less and less, while the number of zombies outside increased.
The first thing that was consumed was the water, and then the food was gradually eaten up. She didn't know how long she had been lying in bed. She just felt that her stomach was getting hungrier and hungrier, and finally she simply lost consciousness.
Her body was getting weaker and weaker. She could clearly feel her strength draining away bit by bit and saw many false illusions. At this moment, she remembered a fairy tale she had read, in which there was a little match girl.
In my despair, I dreamed of being with my grandmother. She was walking in front of me, and I was running to catch up. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't catch up. All I could see was an increasingly blurry figure.
Just when she felt she was about to die, the door opened.
A man wearing ugly clothes and armor, with an unshaven face, looks like a beggar who has been wandering for a long time.
He saw her, but left immediately. At that moment, she felt that the whole world had collapsed. It turned out that even a beggar thought she was worthless.
Fortunately, he came back not long after, bringing food and water.
Having said that, Su Xue raised her head and looked at Jiang Feng, with an indescribable meaning in her eyes.
Jiang Feng touched his chin somewhat awkwardly. After all, at that time he was only thinking about saving people and didn't think too much about it.
After listening to Su Xue's calm story, Jiang Feng couldn't help but hold her in his arms and pat her head gently. After letting her go, he didn't say anything to comfort her, because in this era, she had to be strong. How could she grow up without paying a price?
Jiang Feng now understood her abnormal behavior today. She was already extremely insecure, and it was probably because she didn't look like a good person because of the way she dressed.
Moreover, he was a little too hasty in forcing her and forcing her to dig out the corpse core. If he had known earlier, even Jiang Feng would feel nauseous and want to vomit when digging out the corpse core himself. Forcing her to do so was like forcibly enslaving her.
So for her own safety, she wanted to test Jiang Feng's bottom line and deliberately threw a tantrum and acted capriciously.
However, because she did not receive any punishment after all her mischief, and she cried to vent her anger, she now truly believed in Jiang Feng.
"Just follow me from now on. I can't say anything else, but at least no one will bully you." Jiang Feng said slowly, looking at the little Lolita beside him.
"Um"
They stayed in silence for a long time, but Su Xue raised her head beside him and said to him: "This is unfair, you have to say it too."
