Chapter 354 Can't we eat this?

"Huh? I didn't expect you to agree so quickly, sister." Freya was very happy and sat down next to Shiyin. "Old Tang just said that you've never agreed to let anyone go with you before."

"He just likes to make wild guesses. Some of his words are best left unsaid." Shi Yin shrugged. "That's because they're all too weak. If I let them stay with me, I'd have to figure out how to save them, which would be too much trouble."

"Then how do you know if we're strong or not?" Freya asked curiously.

“Intuition.” Shi Yin blinked. “It’s not about trying to get close to you. It’s kind of strange, but I feel a bit close to you guys.”

Upon hearing this, Freya and Nanzhu frowned slightly.

Those chosen by the new world are not unaffected by the zombie virus; rather, the virus has subtly altered certain nerves or genes within them.

However, their superpowers suppressed the rampage of the zombie virus, which is why they looked like ordinary people. Once they became zombies, they would definitely be among the highest echelons of the elite.

Of course, only those in high positions survive.

Freya and Nanzhu had already vaguely realized this.

But judging from Shi Yin's appearance, she doesn't even know this? Just how far back in time is this?

"But have you eaten anything before coming up here... I only have enough for myself, I won't leave any for you." Shi Yin picked up a bowl of porridge and drank more than half of it in one gulp: "I'll reluctantly wait for you for a bit, but if you want to fight on an empty stomach tomorrow morning, then just pretend I didn't say anything."

Freya and Nanzhu didn't expect Shiyin to agree so easily.

They had prepared a long explanation to persuade Shi Yin, such as that they could cook, serve tea and water, and investigate the surroundings... This sudden turn of events caught them off guard.

After thinking about it, I decided to go get something to eat first.

They both lack space and it's impossible for them to take out food. If they don't eat something tonight, they'll really go hungry tomorrow.

Upon hearing that the two had succeeded, Old Tang was visibly surprised, yet also overjoyed, and spoke with much more confidence when introducing them.

Hearing that they were people recognized by Shi Yin and would fight alongside him, everyone looked at them with much more enthusiasm. Some people even brought them two bowls of rice and packed several days' worth of dry rations for them.

It was supposed to be several days' worth of rations, but if they had come to this world before, they probably would have eaten it as a snack in a day.

These things, which looked like compressed biscuits, were a strange grayish-brown color. Freya smelled them, but they had no smell at all, only a smell of tree bark. The three pieces of bread were incredibly hard, almost as hard as bricks when squeezed.

Just as the two of them had imagined, the bowl of porridge and the bowl of soup were completely tasteless.

The soup had no saltiness at all. The bits of meat and egg that slid down your throat were indistinguishable from grains of sand, making you wonder if it was just a bowl of soup scooped up from a muddied river, with a couple of grains of salt added.

The same goes for this bowl of porridge. When Freya saw the chef grinding tree bark, she wondered if it was edible. But after swallowing it herself, she was certain...

This thing is probably inedible, right?

When you drink the powder made from the tree bark mixed with rice porridge, it really stings your throat like grains of sand, and it even gets stuck in your teeth. The tree bark added to make the porridge more filling makes it hard to swallow.

But the people around them were eating with great relish, even enjoying it immensely, as if it were some supreme delicacy. Some of the young and strong men had already eaten three bowls.

"By the way, are you all getting enough to eat here? We still have steamed buns." Old Tang seemed to have thought of something: "We people who do physical labor always prepare steamed buns to fill our stomachs. You guys must be doing a lot of exercise following Shi Yin, right?"

"No, thank you." Freya glanced at the steamed buns in the center of the table and stiffly refused the suggestion.

She didn't want to eat the steamed buns mixed with mud and coarse grains, even though it was supposed to be edible soil, but Freya felt she was already full...

Nan Zhu, of course, also silently refused. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. It's not an easy thing to do. At least, they were newcomers and really couldn't swallow it.

However, in order not to be hungry and hold them back halfway through the game tomorrow, the two of them still forced themselves to swallow all the porridge and soup in front of them.

However, it's hard to say whether their stomachs will react negatively, such as to diarrhea...

As expected, Shi Yin kept her word. When they finished eating and came out, Shi Yin was still sitting in the same spot. The bowls and chopsticks were gone, probably put back in their place and handed over to the servants.

"Judging from how pampered you all are, was your original shelter too comfortable, or was it because you were of such high status?" Shi Yin asked curiously.

Freya and Nanzhu didn't know how to answer; they both fit the bill.

“I guess you guys probably won’t be used to sleeping on this communal bed in the shelter. Why don’t you come to my base?” Shi Yin suggested.

"Does your sister have a base?" Freya finally understood why Shion didn't stay with the people in these shelters.

So, I do have a place to stay.

“Of course, I have a home.” Shi Yin shrugged. “Come with me.”

It wasn't until the two followed Shi Yin into a building that they realized whether what Shi Yin called a lie was actually a lie.

This place looks like an ordinary house of about 120 square meters. It's on the first floor, and it may have been cleared out. At least there is no sign of any plants on the first floor, and it looks almost exactly the same as before the apocalypse.

Opening the door felt like stepping into another world.

The room wasn't exactly tidy, but it had a perfect, homey feel. The table and floor were spotless, the bookshelves in the study were full of books, and the desk had unfinished lesson plans and half-read classics.

It's as if more than one person lives here.

"Rest here. Freya, you can stay in my room. Nanzhu, I'll prepare a guest room for you." Shiyin put her guitar aside and took out a blanket from the closet: "I'll sleep in my parents' room, it's empty now."

“Mom and Dad…” Nan Zhu noticed the photo of them together on the cabinet and felt a sudden pang of pain in her heart.

"Ah, don't misunderstand, they just got off temporarily on this road." Shi Yin didn't seem sad. She put the bedding in the guest room and went to prepare food. "Let me tell you a secret, I'm a reincarnated person."

"Huh? Is that so?" Although she already knew, Freya still pretended to be surprised.

“Yes, they’ll be back after this is over, and we’ll see each other soon.” Shi Yin smiled happily as she spoke of her family: “You’ll cook for yourselves? You don’t want to see me blow up the kitchen… You still have a concept of a kitchen, right?”

“Let me do it, Miss… cough, Shiyin, I’m very good at cooking.” Nanzhu stepped forward and took the things from Shiyin’s hands: “You can do some other things, such as what we can do tomorrow.”
