“Last time, without Ji Chuan, two survived.” Shi Yin looked at the list in her hand: “The time before last, more survived, a total of five.”
Lin Beiyue and the others exchanged glances, some of them already a little scared. Judging from Shi Yin's words, what were they going to do, and what was the mortality rate?
"Now I'm giving you a choice. I can remove your rebirth and prophetic abilities, or you can choose to be ordinary citizens," Shi Yin said loudly. "But we will erase this part of your memory."
"You have two choices: First, awaken your powers ahead of time, but the mortality rate is 70%. Second, become ordinary people, and I will send you home. We will make you lose your memory and will not allow you to hoard goods."
Two people's expressions changed instantly.
They are reborn. Before their rebirth, they were not only miserable but also pathetic. It was only because of their rebirth memories that they were able to stand up. Then they suffered from amnesia and hoarded goods. What difference is there between them and those who were not reborn?
Wouldn't that just be repeating the same mistakes? They might even die before the end of the world.
"Didn't they say that when a meteorite falls, we'll immediately gain superpowers?" Someone raised their hand tremblingly.
"You are members of a special team, so of course you should be ahead of everyone else. If you were the same strength as ordinary people, why would we recruit you?" Shi Yin retorted. "We are creating miracles, so everyone should become a part of the miracles."
"If you become ordinary people, you will awaken superpowers after the apocalypse. If you rely so much on rebirth and prophecy, and you can't even be a good ordinary person without these two abilities, then it's only right that you die in the mouths of zombies."
Shi Yin spoke in a flat tone, her voice devoid of any emotion, and even her words were utterly ruthless, as if everyone were facing an AI.
No, it should be said that AI can now mimic human emotions and tone of voice.
“I’m giving you a choice: to become ordinary people. Ordinary people will be protected, and as compensation, I will give you special protection.”
"Taking back your superpowers and memories is the price and obligation you should pay. I don't want to hide anything from you. I'll lay out the pros and cons for you and hope you'll consider it carefully. Give me your answer within 10 minutes."
"Is Changning going to choose too?" Changning stared with her big, round eyes, looking around curiously.
She didn't quite understand much of what Shiyin was saying, but she could roughly grasp that if she didn't choose to follow Shiyin, she would have to forget Shiyin forever.
"Yes, you should too." Shi Yin patted Chang Ning's head and her tone softened a bit: "Chang Ning doesn't have to choose me. Even after forgetting me, you won't be bullied and you'll always be able to eat your fill. That won't change."
"I don't want to! I want to stay with my sister!" Changning tugged at Shiyin's clothes, looking just like a fawn abandoned by its mother: "My sister rescued me from the cage, you can't abandon me, my sister said she wouldn't abandon me."
"If you can endure the pain," Tokine said, "you might die."
"I want to follow my sister!" Changning was the first to firmly state her position.
Ji Chuan and Lin Beiyue also came out.
They didn't have many other choices. Shi Yin valued them highly, and they knew very well that while others could choose to be ordinary people, they had a better option: to stay.
Moreover, thinking about all the mess in her own family, Lin Beiyue clenched her fists.
She didn't want to lose her memory and become an ordinary person. Thinking about her final ending in her previous life and her dying wish, Lin Beiyue had long been determined to climb up, to survive, to become strong, to make her uncle's family pay for their blood debt, and to live up to her mother's expectations.
Ji Chuan's expression was much calmer. He seemed completely unconcerned about the pain or death he might face next, or rather, he had already prepared himself mentally and had no intention of backing down.
The remaining people looked at each other and hesitated for a while, but the longest they hesitated was no more than five minutes.
Of these people, apart from one person with prophetic abilities who had a normal family and enjoyed normal interpersonal relationships and emotions, the rest either suffered greatly or died unjustly.
Let alone the fact that they would have a hard time surviving if they returned to their original homes as ordinary people and lost their memories, even if they had a normal life, it's uncertain whether they could survive in the apocalypse.
They had all witnessed the post-apocalyptic landscape, a scene both stark and brutal.
Although Tokine's statement that staying means creating miracles sounds ruthless, is the end of the world really any better than Tokine describes?
Perhaps the best and most human choice would be to create miracles alongside Tokine?
Having figured this out, although some people still hesitated, they all chose to take a step forward.
"Is that so? You've thought it through. There's no turning back now." Shi Yin didn't react much to these people's choices: "Choosing me means you have two options: death or becoming a superhuman. If you become ordinary people, you might have a better chance of surviving."
Silence fell; no one moved.
Shi Yin said no more. Seeing this, Hermod waved his hand, signaling Shi Yin to lead everyone to follow him.
Behind this building is a laboratory, designed by experts from the Yanlong faction and temporarily built by Hermod with the hand of gods and demons. It is fully equipped and has a strong metallic feel, as if it should be a product of high technology or cyberpunk from thousands of years in the future.
Helmod led the group to stand at the door. The camera at the door recognized Helmod's iris and then his palm print, and quickly opened the door.
The moment they took their first step inside, everyone couldn't help but shudder.
The air here was thick with the cold, metallic scent of metal. Even though the sunlight was shining brightly outside, everyone still felt a chill through their fingertips.
The further you go in, the more oppressive the environment becomes.
It was encased in layers of metal, without even a single green plant to adorn it.
Every so often, several mechanical arms would emerge from the walls, holding light panels that would approach Helmod and the others. They would carefully examine and record their identities before allowing them to pass.
Lin Beiyue noticed that the ceiling and the surrounding walls did not seem to be made of a single piece of steel plate. The three sides seemed to be divided into countless small grids with narrow gaps in between. Without careful observation, it was impossible to see anything.
Lin Beiyue couldn't imagine what was hidden behind those squares if any of the identity scans had gone wrong.
Could all the invaders be buried here in an instant?
There was more than one laboratory here; they also passed by two or three rooms, but each of the glass windows was covered by curtains made of steel plates, so they couldn't see what was happening inside those rooms.
Only occasionally could one faintly hear muffled knocking sounds, so quiet that they quickly subsided, making one think that one had just been hallucinating.
Helmod led everyone to the innermost laboratory, where the curtains were drawn back, revealing large sections of glass.
