Chapter 2

In the cultivation continent where Gu Fan originally lived, all the cultivators pursued immortality. In addition to refining some life-saving or life-threatening elixirs, high-level alchemists also loved elixirs that improved their cultivation, such as foundation-building elixirs, golden elixirs, and infant-forming elixirs. These were the most valuable, but they were also the good things that low-level alchemists like Gu Fan could not make no matter how hard they tried.

Cultivation limits the level of alchemy one can achieve. For example, Gu Fan found the most powerful life-saving elixir she could create was this red flesh-regenerating and blood-tonifying pill. As the name suggests, as long as no bones were broken, any flesh wound, such as bleeding or laceration, could be healed with this pill. Minor injuries were cured with just one pill, while more severe injuries might require multiple.

High-level cultivators look down upon this kind of flesh-growing and blood-replenishing pill. Low-level cultivators without any background must prepare several doses whenever they go out for training. In the eyes of ordinary people, the flesh-growing and blood-replenishing pill is simply a panacea.

According to Gu Fan's understanding, all humans on Earth are mortals. Except for those with wood-type abilities, other people with abilities have to take medication or undergo surgery when they are injured, not to mention ordinary residents without abilities.

Therefore, Gu Fan was confident that with her alchemy skills, she could live a rich and comfortable life in this base.

Lying on the wooden bed, Gu Fan imagined his future life while waiting for the flesh-growing and blood-replenishing pills he had just sent out to take effect.

In the cell opposite, Meng Lianying leaned against the head of the bed, looking at Gu Fan with a complicated expression.

He suddenly regretted it.

Could this seemingly beautiful and harmless woman be sent by his enemies to harm him? How could there be a miracle drug that could heal wounds and remove scars in just one hour?

It's all his cousin's fault. If his cousin hadn't come to pick him up, if he hadn't been afraid of being hurt by his cousin's ridicule, he wouldn't have impulsively taken a red pill of unknown origin.

The more he thought about it, the more uneasy he became, and then he felt uncomfortable all over. Sometimes his neck felt itchy, and sometimes his throat felt tight, and even his vital parts began to feel hot.

Meng Lianying scratched himself twice secretly and then looked at his watch.

It is three o'clock in the afternoon, and there are still three hours until six o'clock.

If the medicine is poisonous, can he hold on until his cousin comes to save him?

Meng Lianying reached for his watch, ready to ask his cousin for help immediately and ask his cousin to arrange for medical staff to come over.

But, what if this medicine really works, and he has made his cousin and the medical staff work in vain? Wouldn’t it be even more embarrassing if it got out?

Meng Lianying scratched his hair, almost going crazy.

Time passed minute by minute, and suddenly, he felt a strange itch on his right leg where the monster had bitten him. Meng Lianying sat up straight, bent his knees and lowered his head, peeled off the edge of the armor that had been bitten by the monster, and stared at the bloody area with wide eyes.

The black dirty blood slowly flowed down like water being squeezed out of a sponge, and only stopped when the color turned completely bright red.

Next, the blurred flesh and blood began to heal slowly at a speed visible to the naked eye.

Meng Lianying: ...

As if someone had pressed a needle on his acupoint, Meng Lianying just hugged his knee and watched the wound heal for more than half an hour.

In the end, the place that had been bitten by the monster was actually fine except that the skin color was too pink.

Meng Lianying jumped off the bed, kicked and jumped a few times in the open space, and his movements were completely unimpeded, as if his right leg had not been injured.

"Hey, where did you get this medicine?"

Walking to the fence, Meng Lianying stared at the woman on the wooden bed and asked.

Gu Fan rubbed his eyes, sat up slowly, and tilted his head to look at him: "Are you healed?"

Meng Lianying nodded, his eyes fixed on her armor pocket. "Who are you? How much of this medicine do you have?"

Gu Fan smiled and began to deceive: "I am a retail investor. The medicine was made by my grandfather. He is an S-level wood-type mutant. Now he is going to do something big. Before leaving, he sent me to the Jiangnan base."

After the great radiation, not all humans gathered in the three major bases. Those humans who were free and had not registered their identities in any base were collectively referred to as retail investors.

Gu Fan knew that her alchemy skills would attract the covetousness of the forces in the base, and they might even capture her and force her to do hard labor to make medicine. Therefore, before finding out the situation in the base, Gu Fan needed to invent a grandfather to support herself.

On Earth, wood-type mutants do not have strong combat capabilities, but they can save lives and are worth winning over.

With the support of a mysterious S-class wood-type mutant, I believe no force will act rashly against her.

Meng Lianying believed Gu Fan's words without a doubt, and he looked at Gu Fan in a much more polite manner.

"I see. Well, before your grandfather comes over, you should come with us first. Oh, let me introduce myself. My name is Meng Lianying, a Gold-type psychic. I have four A-level friends, and we've formed a mercenary group. If you join us, I guarantee that no one in the entire Jiangnan base will dare to cause trouble for you."

Gu Fan's thoughts turned, and he showed an expression of disbelief: "If you are really that powerful, how did you get injured and be locked up here?"

A blush of embarrassment quickly crossed Meng Lianying's fair face. He rubbed his head and explained, "We're really powerful, but this time when we were on a mission, we encountered a tiger-lion with strength close to S-level. I was bitten, but I managed to escape. As for why I was imprisoned here, it actually has nothing to do with my strength. It's all my cousin's fault. He keeps a close eye on me. When he found out I left the city, he deliberately had the guards at the base entrance lock me up as a punishment."

"Your cousin, the one who just communicated with you?"

"Well, he's S-rank. He looks down on me because he's so powerful, and treats me like a child."

Gu Fan was shocked.

Before coming to the base, the mercenary she had interrogated as a prisoner had said that the Jiangnan base had a total of five S-rank experts. Out of respect and caution for the powerful, Gu Fan carefully inquired about the five S-rank experts. Four of them were over fifty years old, and only one was only twenty-seven years old. He was probably Meng Lianying's cousin.

The twenty-seven-year-old S-level expert was called Lu Ya.

The Lu family was a formidable force, having produced three S-rank experts. Lu Ya's grandfather, Lu Sheng, now seventy-eight years old, was one of the first generation of psychics to emerge during the Great Radiation. It was Lu Sheng who led a group of experts in establishing the Jiangnan Base, and as such, it was only natural that Lu Sheng would be promoted to the position of the four marshals of the Jiangnan Base.

Lu Ya's father, Lu Rong, was also an S-level warrior, but he died young in a battle to eliminate monsters ten years ago.

As for Lu Ya, he was detected to have S-level gold-type supernatural powers at birth. At the age of twelve, he began to participate in military battles to eliminate monsters. Up to now, Lu Ya has become the young marshal of the 250,000 Lu family army in the base. He has made great military achievements and his popularity in the base even exceeds that of his grandfather, Marshal Lu.

Gu Fan never thought that his imprisonment was related to Lu Ya's cousin.

However, with Lu Ya backing Meng Lianying, it is indeed safer for her to stay with Meng Lianying for the time being.

"You're the first friend I met at Jiangnan Base. Okay, until I get familiar with this place, I'll be your companion."

After seemingly considering it seriously, Gu Fan accepted Meng Lianying's invitation.

Meng Lianying was very happy. With Gu Fan's medicine, their mercenary team would be safer when going out on missions.

"By the way, why were you locked up?"

Gu Fan got angry when he mentioned this: "I was setting up a stall on the roadside, selling medicine for merit points, but they insisted that I was selling fake medicine. Not only did they confiscate my medicine, they also locked me up for three days."

Meng Lianying raised his voice: "All your medicines were confiscated?"

Gu Fan patted his pocket and said, "There are a few more hidden here."

Meng Lianying was also very anxious. These were life-saving drugs. What a waste it would be if the police mistook them for fake drugs and destroyed them!

Meng Lianying immediately called Lu Ya.

After about a minute, the call was finally connected, and a cold, unhappy voice came out again: "I'm in a meeting."

Meng Lianying: "Cousin, I have a friend who has also been detained. She has something very important in her backpack. Please call Director Zhao and ask them to leave her bag alone."

Lu Ya: "What's your friend's name?"

"Gu Fan, the medicine seller."

A clear and ethereal voice sounded. It was Gu Fan who answered for Meng Lianying. After all, Meng Lianying didn't know her name yet.

There was a pause of a few seconds on the other end of the line, and then the call was disconnected.

Captain Meng breathed a sigh of relief and smiled at Gu Fan, "Don't worry. Even though my cousin looks down on me, he's quite responsive to my requests in other areas. He will definitely take care of this matter."

Gu Fan envied him. Meng Lianying's status in the Jiangnan base meant he was just a relative of the leader of a major sect. He could sleep soundly and act with impunity.

Although she was envious, Gu Fan had already accepted her fate. She was just a low-level minion, and it was already pretty good for her to have a skill and be able to earn money to support herself.

"I hope you can keep the matter of the flesh-growing and blood-replenishing pill a secret for me."

Gu Fan looked at Meng Lianying and discussed seriously, "Grandpa didn't give me many high-grade medicines. I'm afraid that if the news gets out, everyone will come to me to buy them, causing trouble. Grandpa is used to keeping a low profile. He only wants me to use some ordinary medicines to sell for merit points to buy a house and live. He left the Muscle Regenerating and Blood Nourishing Pill for me to save my life. If you weren't so seriously injured, I wouldn't have given it to you."

Meng Lianying was surprised and said, "Is that so? Well, don't worry, unless you agree, I promise not to tell anyone else, including my teammates."

Gu Fan smiled at him and said, "Thank you. The first time I saw you, I felt that you were a trustworthy person."

Meng Lianying was twenty years old, and this was the first time he was trusted by a beautiful girl. He couldn't help but feel warm in his heart and secretly vowed not to let her down.

A man and a woman who looked close in age but were actually eighty years apart were chatting in the cell across two layers of bars. Meng Lianying was mostly introducing the situation in the base, the prices of goods and housing, and Gu Fan blinked his clear black eyes, listening with relish.

Her ignorance of the base fits perfectly with her self-made identity as a retail investor.

Finally, the time began to approach six o'clock in the afternoon.

Meng Lianying began to get nervous and paced back and forth in the cell. Gu Fan watched him walk around a few times and said with a smile, "You seem very afraid of your cousin."

Meng Lianying complained: "You'll know in a moment."

Finally, the sound of a door opening was heard in the distance, and someone saluted respectfully: "Young Marshal!"

"Well, where are the people?"

"This way, I'll lead the way for you."

Meng Lianying gritted his teeth and lay down on the wooden bed.

Gu Fan sat at the end of the bed facing the aisle, waiting to admire the demeanor of an S-level strong man.

With steady, powerful footsteps, a man in black military uniform entered her field of vision. He stood tall, even taller than the cell door. His profile was handsome yet icy, like the countless high-ranking cultivators Gu Fan had admired. His gaze was untouched by the mundane, his mind focused on the question.

Suddenly, he turned around and locked his sharp gaze on her face.

Gu Fan habitually lowered his eyes and bowed his head slightly to show respect.

Lu Ya took another look at her fair and smooth face and walked to the prison door of Menglianying.

The author has something to say:

Lu Ya: How old are you?

Gu Fan: Exactly one hundred years old.

Lu Ya & Meng Lianying & Officer Wang: ...
