Chapter 4 Going Out
Han Shuo got goosebumps watching this scene; no fewer than 30 zombies quickly overwhelmed the woman.
The woman's voice never came out again.
After the zombies finished eating, they quieted down again and wandered around like zombies.
"Damn, stupid woman!"
Han Shuo cursed under his breath. Because there weren't many zombies in the neighborhood at first, Han Shuo could only see less than ten here and there.
The woman's dying screams attracted many zombies from outside.
These zombies are still in the neighborhood and haven't left!
"It looks like we have to take action by tomorrow at the latest!"
According to the previous plan, Han Shuo had the Tang sword and was still somewhat confident. Now, however, there are dozens more zombies, making it several times more difficult to go out.
"If this continues, with two more clueless guys attracting more zombies every day, I'm afraid I'll just starve to death at home."
The plan could no longer be delayed. Although Han Shuo was a little anxious, he could only force himself to calm down.
Looking down at the zombies, Han Shuo felt a chill run down his spine, because nearly ten had unknowingly gathered near his building.
Every now and then, one would rush into the street outside the residential area, but none of the ones inside the residential area would go out.
Han Shuo guessed that the bloodstains left by the woman below were attracting the zombies with their pungent smell. As for the woman's corpse, it was long gone, devoured by countless zombies, leaving not even a fragment of bone behind.
"We must act immediately!"
Han Shuo immediately made a decision: he only had enough food for one more day.
Although drinking water alone won't kill a person in a short time, Han Shuo didn't want to starve himself to the point of being unable to fight, because that would be no different from death.
With a heavy heart, Han Shuo ate all the remaining bread in the bag.
The food was completely gone, but Han Shuo needed to be in top physical condition at this moment.
"If we manage to gain something and obtain some food, there is still hope. If we are unlucky and die out there, at least it will be a quick end."
Starving to death was the outcome Han Shuo could least accept.
...
As the cigarette in his mouth burned out, Han Shuo took out another Tang sword from the cupboard in the room.
The Tang sword looked exactly like the one he had practiced with before.
However, this Tang sword had been sharpened and was kept at home as a collection.
Then he put on the largest backpack to carry the food.
Ready!
Han Shuo gently stroked the Tang sword in his hand.
"Old buddy, it's up to you now!"
After saying that, he opened the door and carefully walked out.
...
There were no zombies outside the door at the moment; he had already observed them through the peephole before coming out.
I quietly closed the door without making a loud noise.
"The 6th floor! Ugh, I should have rented a lower floor!"
As soon as he stepped out, Han Shuo was faced with a dilemma; getting down from the 6th floor wouldn't be easy. He didn't know how to use the elevator. Although the elevator lights were still on, it shouldn't be broken.
But he didn't want to be trapped inside by zombies as soon as he stepped out of the elevator.
"Take the stairs."
After looking around, Han Shuo found that the 6th floor was still relatively safe, with no trace of zombies. There were two households per floor, and Han Shuo didn't know if anyone was in the other household at the moment.
At least the door is locked, so there's no need to worry about zombies suddenly running out.
Sixth floor, fifth floor, fourth floor, Han Shuo moved slowly, trying not to make a sound.
The area ahead was relatively quiet, and no signs of zombies were found.
As he descended each floor, Han Shuo would close the door of the current stairwell behind him.
First, there was the fear of zombies surging out from inside. Second, there was the desire to ensure a safer return.
"Hopefully these guys won't open the door."
Han Shuo continued walking quietly.
When they reached the fourth floor, Han Shuo instantly focused his attention, because there was a pool of blood on the wall at the corner between the fourth and third floors!
Han Shuo turned sideways and looked down through the gap in the middle of the stairs.
Sure enough, directly below him, one floor away, lay a corpse.
I'm a little nervous, but not panicked.
Han Shuo couldn't be sure if the corpse would stand up. As he walked down, he gently drew his Tang sword from his waist.
One step, two steps. At this moment, the Tang sword in his hand was already aimed at the corpse.
Han Shuo was just one step away from crossing the threshold and continuing his journey.
Suddenly! Han Shuo saw the corpse's nose twitch slightly, as if it were sniffing something.
Without hesitation, he quickly plunged the Tang sword into the corpse's head. The moment he did so, the corpse's eyes opened.
"Phew, that was close! It turns out that corpse was a zombie too!"
Seeing that the zombie was completely unresponsive, Han Shuo breathed a sigh of relief. Then his expression changed, and he forcibly suppressed the churning in his stomach.
"Me? I killed someone?"
Although Han Shuo knew in his heart that zombies were no longer part of the human race, he still felt a great deal of turmoil as he plunged a Tang sword into his head for the first time.
Even in his room, Han Shuo had already given himself a pep talk countless times.
But the fact that it happened before his eyes still made him feel uneasy. Even the hand holding the knife trembled slightly.
"In the end, no matter how calm I am on weekdays, I'm still just a normal person."
Quickly drawing his Tang sword, Han Shuo stepped over the zombies and went straight to the third floor.
Leaning against the wall, he remained calm for a long time before his heart finally settled. The Tang sword in his hand stopped trembling. Han Shuo's eyes became even more resolute.
"My only goal is to live! In order to survive, I must adapt to this feeling!"
...
Without wasting any more time, Han Shuo took another step.
Fortunately, apart from a zombie on the fourth floor, no further danger occurred until Han Shuo went downstairs.
Now, the most important moment is about to begin.
"Zombies primarily rely on sound, sight, and smell."
"Keep your voice down as much as possible, try to conceal your position, and as for your sense of smell..."
"I have no blood on me. Even if a zombie has a keen sense of smell, it would take it at least two meters to detect me."
While hiding by the wall, Han Shuo observed and quickly calculated in his mind.
The closest zombie to Han Shuo is currently 5 meters away, with its back to him. There are also four other zombies wandering aimlessly nearby.
"Judging from the route, they won't be heading this way anytime soon."
After observing the surroundings, Han Shuo turned his gaze to a convenience store in the distance.
This convenience store is located inside the residential area, and it's currently the closest one to him. It's about 100 meters away as the crow flies, but walking straight ahead would be too obvious, so Han Shuo decided to take a detour.
Plan your route and get started!
"Be careful, be careful, be careful." He silently encouraged himself. Unlike the three people he had met before who ran quickly as soon as they stepped out of the building, Han Shuo quietly slowed down.
He tiptoed toward the nearest zombie, making sure the zombie's back was facing away from him.
The first one is too close; Han Shuo definitely can't get around it.
When Han Shuo slowly walked to within three meters of the zombie, he rushed over instantly.
Having learned from his first experience, Han Shuo knew that the zombie's weakness was in its head, so he stabbed it in the back of the head.
The training techniques honed over 20 years were put to full use at this moment.
