Chapter 26 Hunting Rifle
"Wow, Uncle Jiang, you have a gun!" The fat man's eyes widened when he saw the gun in Uncle Jiang's hand, and he shouted in surprise.
Of course, this was an act. Like Han Shuo, the fat man had already seen the hunting rifle shortly after entering the house.
On the contrary, Li Shurou, whose observation skills were not as keen as the two, was somewhat surprised when she saw the hunting rifle.
"Haha! Yes, this is the real thing, not like the toys you played with when you were kids." Uncle Jiang laughed heartily. He then placed the hunting rifle in front of Han Shuo and the others.
This time, Han Shuo didn't try to be serious anymore. He reached out and took the shotgun in his hand, examining it carefully.
"Judging from its weight and craftsmanship, it should be a genuine gun without a doubt."
Although Han Shuo had never seen a real gun, he still had some ways to distinguish between real and fake, especially at the muzzle, where it was obvious that the bullet had left the barrel.
"Uncle Jiang, where did you get this?" Han Shuo played with it for a while before putting it back on the table. The fat man quickly snatched it away, his eyes shining as he carefully examined the gun.
For Fatty, his love and obsession with guns far exceeded that of Han Shuo.
Jiang Bo made no attempt to stop them, allowing Han Shuo and the other two to play with his hunting rifle.
"Sigh, what man doesn't like guns? I'm no exception. I went to great lengths to get one when I was young, and I've kept it ever since."
“The government doesn’t allow private individuals to own these things, so I hid them away as treasures. I never expected they would actually come in handy now.”
After saying that, Uncle Jiang saw that the fat man had touched the trigger of the shotgun and quickly reminded him.
"Xiao Bin, be careful, kid. There are bullets in this gun. Don't let it go off accidentally."
Uncle Jiang grew increasingly fond of the fat man, and even his way of addressing him became more affectionate.
"Okay, okay." The fat man didn't even look up, continuing to play with it.
"Alright, alright, if you guys don't eat soon, it'll get cold."
Seeing that the group was talking endlessly about guns, Jiang Bo's wife, who had no interest in guns, urged them to eat.
Han Shuo suddenly remembered a saying: A man is a boy until he dies.
"Hehe, that's right. Men only act like a bunch of children when they're together, even someone as old as Uncle Jiang is no exception."
"Alright, stop playing around, Xiao Bin, hurry up and eat. Your aunt is getting impatient." Uncle Jiang looked at the fat man with a kind expression.
"Oh, I see." Although the fat man was a little reluctant, he ultimately decided that since the hunting rifle wasn't his, he handed it back to Uncle Jiang.
Uncle Jiang got up, put the hunting rifle back in the cabinet, and closed the door. He did so casually, without locking it.
Soon, the people at the table changed the subject and continued eating amidst laughter and chatter.
Han Shuo kept thinking about the hunting rifle from earlier. He knew that given Jiang Bo's past family circumstances, there was a good chance he could actually get his hands on a real gun.
It makes sense that Uncle Jiang had a gun and the two elders are still alive.
Hunting rifles have greater killing power but shorter range, but in today's situation, they are much more convenient.
Apart from soldiers, very few people have ever touched a real gun, let alone used it.
If you were to place a sniper rifle here, although it would have a wider firing range, someone without extensive training might not necessarily find it as effective as the hunting rifle in front of them.
When dealing with zombies, a shotgun is simple and straightforward. You can say that you don't even need to aim. As long as you know how to fire, its powerful firepower and range will likely kill a zombie in one shot at close to medium range.
While pondering, Han Shuo maintained a normal smile and dined with everyone.
...
After dinner, everyone chatted in the living room for a while. During this time, Uncle Jiang asked Fatty about how they got here.
The fat man carefully dealt with the situation using a mix of truth and falsehood, leaving no room for doubt.
This made Uncle Jiang really worried for the three of them. He kept saying things like, "It's not easy to survive. You three kids have suffered so much."
Before they knew it, it was almost midnight. Seeing that it was very late, everyone prepared to go to sleep.
Uncle Jiang arranged for Han Shuo and the other two to rest in rooms on the third floor, saying that the third floor was the most comfortable.
The original plan was to have three rooms on the three-story building, one for each person, but in the end, Han Shuo insisted that the three of them sleep in one room because he didn't want to trouble the two elders to clean.
Fortunately, the house was big enough and not too cramped. Uncle Jiang shook his head, still smiling, and said that they had a good relationship. He didn't try to dissuade them further and just went along with it.
And so, Han Shuo, Wu Chengbin, and Li Shurou successfully settled down here.
...
The next day, leaving Fatty and Li Shurou at the Western-style building, Han Shuo made up an excuse to go out.
He was still a little uneasy and decided to investigate the area.
"Strange? Uncle Jiang said he encountered zombies and took them all out with his hunting rifle, so why isn't there a single corpse nearby?"
Han Shuo circled the farm extensively but found no zombies, not even a single corpse.
"It's estimated that Uncle Jiang disposed of the body elsewhere."
This place is indeed quite remote. Han Shuo remembered that they drove all day yesterday to get here.
Still somewhat unwilling to give up, Han Shuo continued walking outside.
After walking about two kilometers, Han Shuo encountered the first zombie that emerged from the woods.
The farm is on higher ground, and from here looking towards the farm, you can no longer see that three-story building.
"Yes, no wonder the two elders have survived until now, this place is indeed safe."
Han Shuo drew his Tang sword and casually finished off the zombie.
"Even if a few zombies wander by occasionally, this location is unlikely to pose a danger in the short term, and once they get close to the farm, Uncle Jiang's shotgun can easily take them out."
Han Shuo suddenly felt that he liked this place more and more, compared to the greenhouse where he and Fatty had previously stayed.
This place is not only difficult to detect, but also easy to defend and difficult to attack. In particular, the brick walls of the Western-style building make it even more difficult for zombies to break through.
"I hope these two elderly people are truly as kind as they appear." Through this brief observation, Jiang Bo and his wife didn't seem suspicious. Han Shuo also hoped everything would go smoothly without any surprises.
"Never mind, let's go back." Han Shuo had been out for almost half a day, and if he lingered outside for too long, it might worry the fat man and the other man.
"Hmm? What's that smell?"
A gentle breeze blew by, and Han Shuo suddenly caught a whiff of something.
"It stinks!" Han Shuo sniffed carefully.
"The sound is coming from the north of the woods, let's go check it out!"
With these thoughts in mind, Han Shuo stopped his plan to go back. He was very sensitive and could not afford to be careless in the slightest.
...
The further north they went, the clearer the smell became. Soon, about five minutes later, Han Shuo finally arrived at the place emitting the stench.
"Ugh—! This smell is suffocating."
This was a depression filled with dead zombies, some headless, some missing limbs...
Han Shuo pinched his nose, wanting to get closer to observe.
