Chapter 140: The Venomous Snake Baring Its Fangs

On the other side, the crescent moon hangs high in the sky, casting a layer of silver-white gauze over the golden sand sea.

The temperature in the desert is very low at night, and the wind that blows from time to time carries a hint of chill.

Li Lin and Kassadin waited outside the gate of the ancient tomb for half a day before they walked down the steep slope and marble steps to the outer perimeter of the tomb.

Li Lin gasped in shock upon seeing the grandeur of the mausoleum. "Hiss—I've only seen this kind of scene in movies and games..."

Kassadin heard his mumbling and was a little surprised. "Game? How can you recreate this kind of scene in a game? And... that electric thing?"

"It's nothing, just a name in my hometown." Li Lin smiled and didn't want to dwell too much on this issue.

Kassadin is not a person who asks too many questions and knows when to speak and when not to speak.

Seeing that Li Lin didn't want to answer this question at all, he just skipped it.

Then, Kassadin's gaze circled around the hall in front of him several times, taking in everything.

He noticed four corpses lying on the ground at a distance from each other, and two of them had been charred, with their original appearance completely unrecognizable.

"It seems the expedition team discovered quite a few mechanisms... but also triggered some hidden magical traps."

Kassadin thought for a moment, then turned back to look at Li Lin and said in a very serious tone:

"This exploration is much more dangerous than my previous trip to the Tomb of Horlock. Even though Sivir and the others have broken through most of the traps, I still hope that from now on, you will completely obey my instructions."

Influenced by him, Li Lin also became serious and nodded heavily, "Don't worry."

The day before, he asked Kassadin many questions about what to pay attention to when exploring such an ancient tomb.

In addition to the traps and mechanisms, the most dangerous people in the ancient tomb are the guardians Bakay.

But Li Lin knew very well that the tomb where Azir was buried contained a terrifying existence even more dangerous than Bakay...

The mad ascended being - Renekton, the Desert Butcher.

There is also Xerath, the ancient wizard who betrayed Azir.

Led by Kassadin, they followed the traces of the expedition team on the ground, avoided the mechanisms that had been dismantled by them, and finally reached the stairs leading to the depths.

"Oh, Kassadin," Li Lin said as they walked, pretending to have suddenly remembered something. "You should know the legend of the Grand Scholar, right?"

Grand Maester is the Shuriman name for the god-warrior Nasus.

Because he was knowledgeable, he once was in charge of the empire's great library.

"Of course, Nasus is well-known in Shurima." Kassadin's voice was filled with admiration at the mention of the name. "Why are you asking this now?"

"I remember that Nasus has a brother named Renekton?" Li Lin asked in a puzzled manner.

"True, but he vanished with the fall of Shurima millennia ago... Many say he was annihilated along with Emperor Azir in the collapsing sun disc.

"But they all forgot the Ascended's immense vitality. Furthermore, according to the ancient texts left behind at the time, Nasus and Renekton were dispatched to deal with an urgent threat and were not present at all."

Kassadin snorted coldly, expressing his disdain for those who were illiterate and liked to spread rumors that had no basis at all.

Then, he told Li Lin what he knew, which was mostly from ancient books and a few stories from wise elders:

Emperor Azir has a trusted slave named Xerath, but this ungrateful thief attempts to seize Azir's ascension power.

At the highest point of the Ascension Altar, the sun priests have summoned the great power of the sun to the world.

However, Xerath pushed Azir off the altar, causing him to lose the protection of the rune ring and instantly turn into ashes in the surging sun fire.

Afterwards, Xerath used the powerful power he had gained to raze the City of the Sun to ruins and fought with his god-warrior brothers who hurried back after hearing the news.

In order to destroy this evil guy, Renekton sacrificed himself and chose to die with Xerath...

These stories are told by Kassadin by combining ancient books and legends passed down orally from generation to generation by the elders, and are relatively close to what actually happened thousands of years ago.

But some of his stories were fabricated by later generations and contain inaccurate content.

For example, it was not Xerath who destroyed the City of the Sun, but the huge astral power from the heavens was stolen by this unrecognized guy, and the resulting explosion destroyed the capital.

And Renekton did not die with Xerath, but he and his brother Nasus sealed him in a magic sarcophagus they carried with them when they went out to deal with an eternal fire beast spirit.

But Xerath's power was beyond their imagination. He shattered the sarcophagus and engaged in a fierce battle with the god brothers. Ultimately, with Renekton restraining them, the two were sealed together by Nasus within the Tomb of the Emperors...

"But I remember that Renekton and Xerath didn't die together. Instead, they were sealed in the Tomb of the Emperors by Nasus..."

After Kassadin finished speaking, Li Lin took the opportunity to bring up the background he knew.

"Huh?" Kassadin was startled by his words and subconsciously glanced down into the depths of the mausoleum. "Where did you hear that?"

"Oshla Vaz'an was once the northern trade warlord of the Shurima Empire. There is an ancient tome about Shurima preserved in the Piltover Library."

Li Lin made up some nonsense and found a fairly convincing reason.
