Chapter 12

Chapter 12

He went out in the middle of the night with only a female servant by his side.

Wenxi finally smiled and said, "Go and get the pain-relieving ointment from my room. I'll give it to this girl as a reward."

The maid knew she had made the right bet. She kowtowed several times on the ground and slowly moved away. As long as the young lady still needed her, she couldn't remain a lowly servant doing odd jobs in the front yard forever.

The maid glanced at the dark sky outside and whispered, "It's unusual for Fourth Miss to go out so late at night. Should we send someone to look for her?"

"What's the point of looking? So much time has passed, she's probably all gone." Wenxi sat upright in the folding chair, her fingers unconsciously tracing the rough scars on the inside of her wrist. She made up her mind, "Go and find out where she's been these past few days."

The maid understood and, after helping Wenxi rest, made the arrangements.

Unlike Wenxi, who was calm and collected at the moment, Wen Shu was furious inside the medicine shop.

Her slender, pale fingers tightened, gripping the handsome young man's collar tightly, bringing them very close.

Wen Shu glared at him and roared, "If you want to die, then die! Nobody's stopping you! You've caused trouble outside and come back here. Are you afraid people won't know you're at the medicine shop?!"

Pei Lingjun hadn't yet recovered from the deafening sound of the door being kicked open when someone grabbed him by the collar and demanded an explanation. His head was spinning more and more, and he had no choice but to grab Wen Shu's shoulder and tell her to calm down, "Wen Niangzi, let go first..."

Wen Shu, panting heavily, let go of him and slammed him back onto the bed.

Hanxiang had never seen Wenshu so angry. She only dared to offer her a cup of tea to calm her down. Afterwards, she hid outside the door, feeling worried for the young man inside. She could only hope that he would have good fortune.

After coughing twice, Pei Lingjun caught his breath and explained, "Madam Wen, there's no need to be so angry. I originally wanted to ask for your help today, but alas..."

"...I have no choice but to risk leaving the manor."

Wen Shu swallowed a mouthful of the cold tea that stung her throat. She remembered that when she lost her composure and left during the day, this person had rushed up to her, wanting to say something, but she was in a bad mood at the time and didn't pay much attention.

With a thud, the teacup was slammed onto the table, spilling half a cup of tea. The woman looked up and asked coolly, "So, you're saying I was in the wrong?"

“...I wouldn’t dare.” Pei Lingjun avoided her gaze, feeling inexplicably guilty. “I haven’t left any trace along the way, so you can rest assured, Madam Wen.”

rest assured?

Wen Shu pondered these two words, truly unsure of what she should be at ease with. Should she feel at ease with openly taking in the valiant guards who wanted to raid her home, or with ambiguous arrangements for keeping him at the estate?

"When everyone at the medicine shop saw the blood all over the floor, they thought you were dead."

Pei Lingjun glanced at the pitch-black sky outside, his pale lips curving slightly, a barely perceptible smile appearing in his eyes: "So, Lady Wen came here in the middle of the night in the rain to confirm whether I'm dead or not?"

Wen Shu said irritably, "Of course, if you die, we can collect your body tonight."

Rainwater mixed with blood lay scattered on the ground, and with the bloody footprints outside, at first glance it looked no different from a crime scene.

The blood was caused by Pei Lingjun climbing over the wall to leave the mansion, which caused his wound to reopen.

Mulberry bark and white thread were soaked in medicine, and various sizes of medicine bottles were laid out. Wen Shu stepped forward with gleaming silver scissors, her face cold as she said, "Take off your clothes."

Pei Lingjun pressed his wound and smiled, "This is just a minor injury, no need for Lady Wen to help. I can do it myself—"

A cold, penetrating gaze swept over him, and Pei Lingjun shut his mouth. He unbuttoned his shirt, lay down on the bed, and started a conversation: "Madam Wen has excellent medical skills. May I ask which family you studied under?"

Blood clung to the gauze, and the already unhealed wound reopened. Wen Shu fought off her drowsiness and mustered her strength, saying, "Even the best medical skills are powerless against a patient like you who disregards their own life."
