Chapter 15
"But...but my sister is getting engaged soon..." the boy murmured, "How could this happen?"
While the boy was still in a daze, Pei Lingjun quickly wrote a letter: "Could you do me a favor?"
"What?"
The letter was stuffed into his palm, and Wenji looked at him in confusion.
Pei Lingjun placed a piece of white jade on the letter and patiently coaxed, "Help me deliver this letter, and the reward will be substantial. How about it or not?"
Wenji looked at the fine white jade in his palm, and after a long while, he blurted out, his face flushed, "But isn't this reward still given by my elder sister?"
"I can deliver the message for you, but you must leave my sister immediately. She's getting engaged soon, and if people find out she's keeping a mistress..."
"A mistress?" Pei Lingjun's calm and composed face finally cracked. No wonder the young man had looked at him so strangely earlier; he must have mistaken him for a bastard kept by Wen Shu at the medicine manor!
"Don't overthink it." Pei Lingjun shoved the item into his hand, his face darkening. "Your sister and I aren't in that kind of relationship. Deliver this letter to Boss Zhou of Baihe Restaurant as soon as possible."
Wenji clutched the item, looking suspicious. "Is everything you're saying true?"
Pei Lingjun raised his hand and swore, "It's more real than real gold."
The two, one big and one small, slipped out of the house. Pei Lingjun escorted Wenji to the top of the wall. As dawn broke, everyone in the village showed signs of waking up.
The boy climbed over the wall and quickly left when no one was paying attention.
Yesterday, when his elder sister picked him up from school, she took a detour to the medicine shop. He vaguely heard something about a young master in the carriage. This morning, his elder sister's bedroom was empty, not even Hanxiang was there.
The whole story is coherent; no one, not even ghosts, would believe there wasn't someone hiding in the medicine shop.
I sneaked over here early this morning, and there really were people there.
The letter was crumpled and creased. Chengwu bent over, put his hands in his pockets, and chattered like an old woman: "Young master, it's getting late. If you don't go to school soon, the old teacher will scold you."
After a moment's thought, Wenji put the old master's sternness out of his mind and shook his head, saying, "Let's go to Baihe Restaurant first!"
...
"Hey—what are you doing?! This medicine shop isn't a place just anyone can walk into!"
Granny Chen from the medicine shop was pushed by two or three guards and slammed into the door with a loud thud, attracting the attention of many servants inside the medicine shop.
"What happened?"
"Ouch! Someone hit me!!"
"Who is this person?"
...
Amidst a commotion, a carriage bearing the Wenfu sign came to a steady stop in front of the medicine shop.
Granny Chen, clutching her sore arm, and several servants from the pharmacy all turned to look in that direction.
The carriage curtain was lifted, and a female attendant with eyes on the top of her head stepped out, causing everyone's hearts to ease for a moment, only to tighten again immediately.
Wenxi, who hadn't left the mansion in a long time, habitually touched her pearl-encrusted earrings. Looking back, she saw the clattering of a carriage approaching from the end of the alley. She immediately smiled and thought to herself, "They've finally arrived."
The servants and young men at the medicine shop lowered their heads and greeted him with pale faces.
Granny Chen, being the manager of the estate, was trembling with anxiety, but she forced a smile as she spoke to Wenxi, "Young Miss? What brings you here? If the manor is short of ginseng or deer antler, we can simply send someone to deliver the message. How could we trouble you to come in person?"
"My fourth sister didn't return all night, surely Granny Chen couldn't be unaware of that?"
