Chapter 154
How could she possibly show her embroidery work to just anyone?
Wen Shu vaguely brushed it off.
The next morning, the Lu family sent a carriage to pick him up. On the coldest day of winter, Lu Jiang, dressed in a dark blue robe with a moon-white cloak over it, leaned out of the carriage, looking every bit the gentleman.
The servants who accompanied Zhou Yun carried the boxes that Zhou Yun had prepared onto the carriage, and Han Xiang helped Zhou Yun to the empty carriage at the back.
At the courtyard gate, Wen Shu, dressed in a clean scarlet dress, held a hot water bottle in her hand, stamping her feet in the snow, and exhaling a thin mist from her mouth and nose.
"Ah Shu—"
Pei Lingjun called her name, and Wen Shu turned around. Before she could see what was happening, she felt a faint scent of pine wood waft over her. Then, a thick cloak fell on her shoulders, still warm from the man's body.
"It's so cold outside, why aren't you wearing something warmer?"
Wen Shu covered the hot water bottle with both hands, unable to move, and could only let Pei Lingjun tie the belt of the silver fox fur cloak neither too loosely nor too tightly.
The cold wind was kept at bay, and my whole body felt warm.
Wen Shu glanced at the nearly finished moving the boxes, sniffed her red, frostbitten nose, and said, "Who knew it would be so cold today..."
A man and a woman stood in a sparsely populated alley, their every action so intimate and familiar, as if they had known each other for a very long time.
Lu Jiang's hands, which were tucked into his sleeves, clenched slightly involuntarily.
"Ah Shu, it's getting late, we should go." Lu Jiang took a few steps forward, making a move to grab Wen Shu's wrist, but Pei Lingjun stepped forward and blocked Wen Shu's way, making Lu Jiang's outstretched hand look particularly abrupt.
"Thank you, Cousin Lu, but I'll just ride in the same car as A-Shu." The young man said with a smile.
Lu Jiang's expression hardened, as if he hadn't expected Pei Lingjun to make such a request. "Does Brother Song also intend to come to the Lu residence with me?"
"Wherever A-Shu goes, I will go."
Seeing the two men facing off in silence, with unseen tension simmering all around, Wen Shu quickly tried to smooth things over, "Cousin, Ling Jun has nowhere to go. It would be too lonely to leave him alone in the courtyard."
Lu Jiang gave Wen Shu a deep look, a smile playing on his lips. "In that case, Brother Song, let's go together."
The two of them became a trio.
The space inside the carriage became cramped.
Wen Shu leaned against the back wall of the car, while Pei Lingjun and Lu Jiang sat on opposite sides.
"I heard Brother Song is from Jinzhou? Why did you go to the Wen residence all of a sudden?"
Pei Lingjun remained calm and spoke softly, "My parents passed away early, leaving me all alone with no one to rely on, so I had no choice but to seek refuge with the Wen family."
Wen Shu held her breath and concentrated.
In the center of the carriage sat a small brazier of charcoal, several pieces of charcoal burning red-hot, yet without a trace of smoke.
Lu Jiang smiled slightly. "But the Wen family has fallen. Brother Song, won't you seek your future elsewhere?"
Wen Shu's gaze swept between the two of them, and she tried several times to interject, "Um..."
They were all ruthlessly interrupted.
“No need for Cousin Lu to worry,” Pei Lingjun seemed to be smiling, but the smile did not soften the coldness in his eyes and brows. “Compared to my future, I want to be with A-Shu more right now.”
It was almost a blatant declaration of possession. Lu Jiang's face immediately turned cold, and even the slightest bit of feigned smile vanished.
"Is that so?" His gaze fell on Wen Shu, who was trying to make herself as inconspicuous as possible, and he asked, "Ah Shu, do you have any thoughts about marriage?"
With a 'thud,' it felt like a heavy punch to the heart, leaving a dent in the soft flesh.
Wen Shu opened her eyes wide, completely bewildered as to how this topic had somehow ended up on her, and in such a direct way.
"Ahem..." Wen Shu frowned. "To be honest, all I want to do right now is run the pharmacy. I haven't really thought about anything else. Cousin, please don't ask."
