Chapter 20
Seeing that the situation was deadlocked, Cui Pei cleverly said, "Didn't you say that you weren't in a hurry to use it, sir?"
Wenxi opened her eyes wide and stared intently at the official seal and certificate with all the necessary documents, her mind filled with doubt.
"It's all a misunderstanding." Wen Tao waved away the guards, a smile appearing on his face. But to Wen Shu, that smile seemed utterly hypocritical. "Yuan Zhuo traveled all the way to Anyang, only to make a fool of himself."
Wen Tao waved his hand, directing several guards, "What are you all standing there for? Why aren't you taking your nephew Yuan Zhuo to his residence?"
A farce that seemed destined to succeed and ruin Wen Shu's reputation ended so amicably.
Surprise and resentment surged into Wenxi's heart. Just as she was about to lash out, she glanced up and saw Wentao's warning look. No matter how unwilling she was, she could only swallow her anger.
"You shameful thing, aren't you coming back with me?"
"Wait." Pei Lingjun's lips curved slightly, his tone cold and hard. "Is that all? Miss Wen has slandered an innocent woman with baseless accusations. Shouldn't she apologize?"
Apologize?
Wenxi's eyelids twitched. Apologize to an insignificant concubine's daughter?
Wenxi subconsciously looked at Wentao, who turned and left, his meaning clear: he should clean up the mess he had made.
The young man raised an eyebrow, his features sharp and angular. Though he curled his lips, there was no real smile in his eyes. He stared intently into Wenxi's eyes, which was quite intimidating.
Her back trembled; without Wen Tao's support, her voice softened: "Yes, I misunderstood. I apologize to Fourth Sister..."
An apology can outweigh a slap in the face—there's no such thing as a free lunch in this world.
Pei Lingjun was about to lash out again, but Wen Shu stopped him and sent Wen Xi away with a few words. It would not do them any good to break off relations now.
The crowd scattered instantly.
Pei Lingjun followed Wen Shu, while the 'servant' beside her, not quite understanding the situation, lagged far behind.
Wen Shu turned half her body away, not wanting to pay him any attention.
But someone else came closer, a smile playing on his lips, and said, "Cousin Wen Shu, I never expected that you and I could work together so well."
Wen Shu stopped in her tracks, her face clouded with gloom. Pei Lingjun instinctively took a half step back, though he couldn't figure out why; it was purely instinctive.
"Why is Wenji here?" Wen Shu stepped forward and pressed, "At this hour, he should be at the school."
Wen Tao may not have suspected anything, but Pei Lingjun's servant came with Wen Ji. When did Wen Ji start hanging out with them?
“Wenji…” Pei Lingjun’s eyes darted around, and he suddenly became a little flustered. “It’s a long story.”
"Then let's go back to the manor. I'll wait for my cousin to speak slowly."
Pei Lingjun sensed a hint of gritted teeth in Wen Shu's words. He knew he had provoked Wen Ji first and was in the wrong. He paused, letting Wen Shu go first, and walked behind her.
Cui Pei finally straightened his back after hunching over for a while. He glanced at the young master's expression while gesturing towards the girl in front of him, his meaning clear: he wanted to inquire about something, but Pei Lingjun didn't want to answer.
Pei Lingjun stood tall and straight like a pine tree, unyielding and unbending, walking forward on his own under the bright moon and gentle breeze, with Cui Pei following behind him with a "heh."
"My lord, you just sent the letter yesterday. It wasn't easy to get the official seal and certificate. If it weren't for my efficient work, you wouldn't be able to explain yourself even if you jumped into the Yellow River!"
The matter of forging a false identity to remain hidden in Anyang for a long time was something Pei Lingjun entrusted to Cui Pei yesterday when he risked leaving the mansion.
It's indeed difficult to obtain a certificate bearing an official seal; even at the fastest pace, it would take three to five days.
but--
“Cui Pei, Cui Pei, our Xiaolong Guard is full of talented people with unique skills,” Pei Lingjun said, glancing sideways and hooking his arm around Cui Pei’s shoulder. “If you don’t think things through, how will you compete with them?”
Cui Pei laughed and responded, but then seemed to sense something was amiss. His smile faltered, and he came to his senses, whispering, "Wait a minute, Your Highness, besides being clever, I have other skills!"
Pei Lingjun ignored him, saying, "They had a falling out as soon as they met Wen Tao. They should be more careful when they get to the Wen family. I don't think any of them are easy to deal with."
The carriage from the Wen family ahead came to a steady stop at the alley entrance. A young woman and a boy of about half a year entered one after the other, but the carriage remained stationary, seemingly waiting for them.
