Chapter 23

Chapter 23

Wen Shu didn't reply, but rolled her eyes inwardly and subtly rubbed her sore knees.

Based on experience, if you kneel for another half an hour until the numbness replaces the tingling, the night won't be too difficult to endure.

No one spoke for a moment by the side window; the previous noise only made the silence more palpable. Wen Shu tilted her head slightly to look at the latticed window on the right.

—Nobody.

Now, just as Pei Lingjun wished, he has moved into the Wen family mansion as the grand-nephew of the old lady. Before long, he will thoroughly investigate the entire Wen family mansion, and then convict and confiscate their property.

Now that things have come to this, she has no room to resist.

If the Wen family really gets involved in Cai Xiangong's case, they will inevitably face this calamity. Even if it's like a moth drawn to a flame or a mantis trying to stop a chariot, she will protect her mother and younger brother.

Wen Shu felt a sharp jolt between her brows and closed her eyes tightly.

What are you thinking about?

Wen Shu was immersed in the entanglement of hatred from her past and present lives when she was suddenly startled by the voice of the young man by the side window and snapped back to her senses.

The young man returned at some unknown time, and it was unclear how long he had been observing from the shadows.

"Is the scenery in Jinzhou beautiful?"

Pei Lingjun flipped over and jumped onto the window. The side window was square and upright. The young man bent one leg and put it on the window frame, while the other leg naturally hung down. His back was leaning against the window frame. He was about to speak in this position when he was suddenly asked a question by Wen Shu.

He was momentarily lost in thought, then lowered his eyelids and looked up into the distance, as if recalling something. Under the night sky, a complex expression appeared on the young man's not-so-clear face.

“Of course, Jinzhou in the north is adjacent to the desert, so its scenery is naturally quite different from that of Anyang, a water town in southern China,” Pei Lingjun said, his head resting against the window frame, his gaze naturally rising to look into the distance. “If it weren’t for the desert people rampaging across the northern border, their horses trampling our territory…”

He suddenly stopped talking, then changed the subject: "The pastries in my room are terribly greasy, do you want some?"

"..."

"I've been guarding this place all along, and there's no one else in or outside the ancestral hall. Why are you kneeling so earnestly?"

"..."

Wen Shu clearly didn't want to pay him any attention, but Pei Lingjun wasn't bored at all. He moved swiftly, leaped through the window, placed the pastries wrapped in oil paper next to her, glanced at the rows of memorial tablets, and laughed, "Fourth Miss, could it be that you've really developed feelings for her after kneeling for so long?"

"Your sincerity is so great. If the Wen family ancestors could really be moved, would you still come to visit them every now and then?"

Wen Shu still didn't answer.

The young man glanced down and happened to see the red mark on her left cheek. Although it had faded a lot, it was still glaringly obvious against her porcelain-white skin.

He subconsciously reached out to check the injury on her face, but for some reason, his hand froze in mid-air and withdrew without a trace.

"Your father doesn't distinguish right from wrong, and your grandmother is biased. I don't think your soon-to-be-engaged fiancé is necessarily a good person. There are thousands of men in the world. Do you really think Fourth Sister is truly willing to marry him?"

Wen Shu raised her eyelids, and a picture of a bride in a red wedding dress flashed through her mind, her smiling face. The next moment, however, she saw a bloody scene: a bright yellow imperial edict, guards with swords, and gushing blood!

That scene just won't leave my mind.

Wen Shu's eyes turned cold in an instant, and a chill ran down her spine. She instinctively grabbed the oil paper on the ground and threw it hard. Each delicate pastry lingered in the air for a moment before crashing down and shattering into pieces!

"Who I marry is none of your business!"
