Chapter 27
The two people in the ancestral hall didn't sleep well last night, and they were both catching up on sleep early this morning.
Birds were chirping on the branches outside the window. In the next instant, they suddenly flapped their wings, the tips of their wings cutting through the bright sky, and in a flash, they were at the city gate.
Today is the fifteenth, and many families have taken the time to go to Guangfu Temple outside the city to offer incense and worship. Carriages are coming and going at the city gate in an endless stream, and there are signs of congestion.
Zhuang Yan lifted one of the carriage curtains and looked outside. The summer sun was shining directly, and even though it wasn't noon, the air was scorching hot.
Why is the traffic so bad today?
By the time they arrived at Guangfu Temple outside the city, it was too late.
The maid beside him understood and said a few words to the coachman outside.
The carriage started moving hastily in an instant, and the long line of carriages that had been blocked off began to move slightly. The servant pulled hard on the reins, large beads of sweat rolling down his collar, and his previously patient mood turned increasingly anxious.
"Waaah—"
The horse, bound by its reins, neighed loudly, its forelegs digging into the ground, its head and neck stiffly resisting the driver's force.
The coachman was getting impatient, and the horse wouldn't cooperate. He frowned, cracked his whip, and lashed the horse's rump, yelling, "Why aren't you moving, you beast?!"
After saying that, he lashed the horse's rump twice more.
With a neigh, the horse, its flesh aching from the whip, took off charging forward recklessly!
"ah!"
A short shout came from inside the carriage. Zhuang Yan was thrown violently by the inertia. Before she could regain her balance, a loud "bang" was heard, and the sound of the broken wood of the wheel suddenly rang out.
"What's going on?!"
The maidservant beside her quickly lifted the carriage curtain, cried out in alarm, and turned around in a panic, saying, "Miss, something terrible has happened! The carriage has been hit!"
Not far from the city gate, amidst a dense crowd, two carriages that were close together suddenly collided, like a drop of water falling into a pot of oil, instantly causing quite a stir.
As is customary, Zhuang Yan would accompany Madam Zhuang to Guangfu Temple today, but unfortunately, Madam Zhuang caught a cold from being exposed to the cold the day before yesterday and has not recovered yet.
The task of going to the temple to burn incense has to fall to Zhuang Yan. Today is definitely a day of bad luck; she bumped into a carriage before even leaving the city!
Zhuang Yan quickly got off the carriage. The coachman of the carriage opposite was controlling and calming the frightened horse. Hearing the commotion, he gave them a cold look.
"I'm so sorry."
The wheels of the two carriages collided, leaving them both battered and broken. However, it seemed that Zhuang Yan's carriage had driven harder, causing the other carriage to be damaged more severely.
Half of the wheel and the branch were broken off, and it couldn't move.
"How about I compensate you with a few strings of cash?"
Zhuang Yan was filled with apology when she heard a young voice from the other carriage, "How much does this lady intend to compensate?"
Zhuang Yan was taken aback. Having no experience, she could only look at the maid beside her.
The waitress estimated for a moment and then held up five fingers to show Zhuang Yan.
"Fifty strings of cash!"
As soon as the young woman spoke, everyone's eyes turned to her.
The waitress quickly reached out and tugged at her sleeve, whispering, "Miss, it's five strings of cash! Five strings of cash!"
