Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Wen Shu couldn't bring herself to do it, so she half-dragged and half-pulled the person into the house.

Hanxiang placed the umbrella under the porch, knocked on the door and went in. Not daring to look around, she placed a plate of medicine on the low wooden table and hesitated before asking, "Miss, are you alright?"

There was clearly someone behind the white gauze screen. Wen Shu shook her head. "I'm fine. Han Xiang, go and tell the people in this manor to send two meals a day and leave them at the door. No one else is allowed to approach this courtyard."

"Yes." Hanxiang looked down and swept her eyes over the girl's soaked clothes, saying worriedly, "There are clean clothes in the side room. You just fell into the water, Miss. You mustn't get sick again."

Wen Shu nodded, and after Han Xiang left, she picked up a few bottles of medicine from the low wooden table and went to the inside of the screen.

On the couch, Pei Lingjun lay supine, struggling to keep his eyes open and trying to stay awake.

Wen Shu threw the medicine in her hand next to him, "This is medicine to stop the bleeding. You'd better not leave this courtyard until you're healed. Once you're healed, get as far away from me as possible."

The woman's voice was cold and clear, devoid of her previous cunning and feigned weakness. She seemed to be covered in thorns, making it impossible for anyone to get close to her.

Seeing that he was about to faint, Wen Shu turned around and left, leaving him to fend for himself.

The door was only half open when the damp, sticky air rushed in, making my wet clothes cling to my body and feel even more uncomfortable.

Thank you...

A faint sound, barely audible, reached her ears. Without turning her head, Wen Shu closed the door and left.

If we really had to thank her, we would have been better off getting out of the pharmacy sooner.

It's best to never appear in front of her again in this lifetime.

On the way back to the manor, Hanxiang finally dared to inquire about the day's events, "Miss, there was blood all over the courtyard, was he—"

"Shh, watch your words." Wen Shu leaned against the carriage, the sandalwood scent in the carriage had mostly dissipated, and looking back on the day's events, she felt extremely tired.

The dry cicada shells clung to her skin as Wen Shu leaned comfortably against the soft pillows. "Don't mention this to anyone, or one careless mistake could implicate the whole family."

Hanxiang listened with trepidation, "Are we really not supposed to tell the master?"

Her thoughts drifted a little further. Whether in her past life or this one, Pei Lingjun was always hunted down and seriously injured, and she happened to save him each time. However, in her past life, she never investigated who was hunting Pei Lingjun.

How credible is Pei Lingjun's claim today that the people chasing him are from the palace?

The princess's chosen fiancé, the princess's prospective son-in-law, and a frequent companion of His Majesty—how many in the entire palace enjoy such an honor?

Who would risk their life to hunt him down?

Qi Pingzhi, who was stationed at the city gate, was a man under the command of the Prefect of Anyang. Who could be so capable as to intercept Pei Lingjun on his way south and also mobilize the Prefect of Anyang to search the city gate?

Since Zhijun knows, then Father...

Unconsciously, her fingertips dug into her palm, and a sharp pain shot through her. Wen Shu snapped back to reality, shook her head, and said, "Don't tell anyone. Keep this to yourself. We absolutely cannot let anyone else know."

Hanxiang nodded cautiously, "I will listen to you, Miss."

——

After Wen Shu left, Pei Lingjun gritted his teeth and took off his clothes. The blood-stained clothes mixed with salty rainwater caused another sharp pain when they touched his wounds.

Pei Lingjun endured the pain and simply bandaged his wounds. The most serious wound was a palm-length knife wound on his side waist, and there was a bloody hole from an arrowhead on his side rib. The rest were inconspicuous minor wounds.

There's another one...

He touched the side of his neck and remembered that girl on that rainy day, she had threatened to kill him. The silver hairpin was sharp and cold, and it was precisely pressed against his neck vein. She knew that this was a vital spot, and once it was cut, he would bleed to death in no time.

But at the last minute, he stopped, leaving only a small wound.

Pei Lingjun chuckled silently, reaching out to apply medicine. He couldn't understand why, if the killing intent was real, the man didn't kill him.

The young man lay on his back, the bed covered with sheer curtains, and he could even smell the unique fragrance of a woman; this was a woman's bedroom.

This place was brought here by Miss Wen, so it's probably not dangerous.

Just to be on the safe side, Pei Lingjun placed the dagger he always carried under his pillow, just in case.

His mind became increasingly confused. Pei Lingjun lay on the couch to rest. As soon as he closed his eyes, he felt his thoughts were in chaos, and his whole body seemed to be floating in the wind, swaying and unable to find its way.

My eyelids felt incredibly heavy, my consciousness blurred, and I couldn't open them no matter what I did. In the next instant, I felt as if my whole body was being sucked in, and finally I calmed down.

"The medicine is all brewed, why aren't you drinking it?"

Pei Lingjun opened his eyes in a daze. The scene in front of him seemed somewhat familiar. Who was speaking?

"Did you save me?" The man's voice sounded weak. The curtains concealed his figure, but he lifted the bed curtains to look over. "Thank you."

Pei Lingjun was unable to move, standing still like a ghost. He was surprised to see that the seriously injured young man on the bed was himself.

And the place where they were was the room where he was resting.

"There's no need to be so polite." The woman looked at the untouched medicine and reminded her, "It's time for you to take your medicine."

The young man glanced at the soup bowl and asked indifferently, "Has anyone tried the medicine?"

The girl blinked and muttered, "Are the requirements really that demanding?"

As Wen Shu picked up the bowl, Pei Lingjun moved to stop her, but his ethereal soul was too weak to stop her.

She tried the medicine, then handed the bowl back to him, saying, "That should do it." She then left without looking back.

Pei Lingjun's gaze also left.

Outside the door, the girl had a bitter expression on her face as she gulped down several mouthfuls of tea to barely suppress the taste of the medicine.

The maid beside him couldn't stand it and complained, "We saved him, and he neither paid the consultation fee nor thanked you for saving his life, yet he still wants to be a test subject for medicine? How can that be reasonable?"

"It's alright. Haven't you heard the saying, 'A life-saving grace should be repaid with one's own body'?"

Pei Lingjun stood silently to one side.

He certainly didn't miss the admiring look in the girl's eyes.

Does she like him?

Pei Lingjun shook his head, thinking to himself that he was probably dreaming.

The brief, hazy realm suddenly twisted and turned, instantly disintegrating.

Pei Lingjun felt his body being pulled around uncontrollably, and he fell into a deep coma.

The woman's words kept repeating in his mind, tinged with a barely perceptible joy and delight, leaving him feeling lost and bewildered.

"Haven't you heard the saying, 'A life-saving grace is repaid with one's own body'?"

Wenfu

After Wen Shu bathed and changed her clothes, she closed the window with a fragrant smile. The raindrops outside hit the tiles, creating a stagnant, undulating sound that blocked out the outside world.

Hanxiang poured her a cup of tea and said with a smile, "Miss, when you were sick a few days ago, the young master of the Qi family came to visit every day. This time he went to Guangfu Temple to fulfill his vow. Why don't you pray for your own marriage?"

She spoke meaningfully, saying softly, "If you could marry Mr. Qi, it would be a wonderful thing for you."
