Chapter 53

Chapter 53

Wen Shu was stunned by Zhou Yun's words. She hesitated and raised her head. "Really?" As soon as she said it, she met Zhou Yun's surprised look.

Wenji untied the string of the salted cake and pulled out a note from the seal. He murmured, "Cousin A-Shu, I couldn't control myself last night and accidentally spilled your two jars of pear blossom wine. I've come today to apologize."

"!!!"

Wenji suddenly stood up, the note in his hand feeling like a hot iron, and he couldn't hold it, so he flung it onto the table.

The delicate note landed right in front of Zhou Yun's eyes. The handwriting on the plum blossom-patterned note was sharp and powerful, clearly written by a man.

"That's not how it works..."

Wen Shu waved her hands repeatedly, meeting Wen Ji's shocked yet relieved gaze, and opened her mouth as if to explain.

“Sister,” Wenji gasped for breath, his hands behind his back. The sage teachings he received from the teacher in the school had caused his reason to break down. He didn’t know how long it took before he forced himself to accept this fact.

"So you and him... you and him really were..." Wenji's eyes darted around anxiously, "So at the medicine shop, he was with you..."

Wenji couldn't finish his sentence. He swallowed hard, blaming himself for not realizing it sooner.

Why would my cousin from Jinzhou know my older sister?

How could the elder sister allow a stranger to enter the medicine shop so casually?

It turns out that the man was indeed the mistress that my sister kept at the herbal medicine shop...

Wenxi was right...

A complex mix of emotions welled up in the young man's heart. Wenji quickly cupped his hands in greeting and rushed into the rain without looking back.

Behind him came Wen Shu's soft voice, "Wenji, come back! It's not like this!"

Zhou Yun held Wen Shu's shoulder, her expression firm and inquisitive, "I'll ask you one more time, is the man from the Qi family or your cousin from the Song family the one you like?"

Wen Shu was speechless.

“Even though you’re already engaged to the Qi family, if you don’t like the young man from the Qi family, your mother will try to break off the engagement.” Zhou Yun looked into her eyes. “Shu’er, life is too long. If you can’t spend your life with the person you love, if your marriage is full of hardships, your mother will not be able to close her eyes in the afterlife.”

Wen Shu took a deep breath and shook her head, saying, "Mother, even if the Qi family's young master isn't a good man, I can't marry Cousin Song." She smiled calmly, "Because I had a dream..."

"In my dream, my cousin harmed us terribly, and in the end, I also died a violent death..." Wen Shu silently raised the corners of her lips, and suddenly her nose tingled with tears. "Mother, if one day the Wen family is to suffer a great calamity, would you be willing to go with me?"

Perhaps it was the desolate and lonely rainy night that gave rise to the deepest, most unspoken sorrow in people's hearts. Wen Shu stared at Zhou Yun with tears in her eyes.

The latter lovingly stroked her head, his gaze piercing through the layers of rain to look at the entire Wen Mansion. It was shrouded in torrential rain, the dark and gloomy world devoid of any light. Under the thick clouds, it seemed like just a small floating boat between heaven and earth.

The road ahead is unknown, and fate is uncertain.

“I have lived in the Wen family for nineteen years, raising children and being a good wife and mother. If that day ever comes, I hope you can leave, stay away from all this strife, and live a good life.”

Wen Shu shook her head, a lump of tears welling up in her eyes. She grabbed Zhou Yun's hand, not wanting to experience another heart-wrenching separation. Her gaze was exceptionally resolute. "No, I will leave with Mother and my younger brother. The three of us will find a quiet little place and spend the rest of our lives there."
