Chapter 59

Chapter 59

The hurried words came to an abrupt halt, lingering at the throat. The dark-faced fat man trembled as he looked at the long sword that had somehow been placed against his neck, then followed the blade to the somber-looking young man.

When the younger bandits saw that their leader had been taken hostage, they were immediately at a loss, their eyes filled with confusion, fear and helplessness as they looked at each other.

"Kneel down."

The young man pressed the tip of his sword against the dark-faced fat man's throat. The latter dared not resist and, following the force of the sword tip, knelt down on the gravel road with a thud, his expression filled with fear and panic.

"Where is Wen Shu?!"

This was the third sentence they had heard Pei Lingjun speak so far, and the oppressive and chilling tone in his words sent a shiver down everyone's spine.

'Bang--'

Wen Shu's knee hit the ground, and pebbles dug into her flesh. She paled slightly from the pain, but quickly stood up and groped her way away from the guards.

The woodshed had not been cleaned beforehand, so they were unaware that the windows, which were supposed to be nailed shut, were actually movable.

Having lived in Anyang for so many years, this was the first time Wen Shu had ever known that there was such a place outside Anyang city.

Why don't these people go home? Why do they keep going against the government?

A strongly premonition-like thought suddenly rose in her mind. She had doubted this idea countless times, but each time she repeatedly told herself to overturn it.

She believed her father wasn't that kind of person.

However, this self-deceptive suggestion began to falter on this deserted mountaintop amidst repeated robberies and kidnappings.

In his previous life, Pei Lingjun infiltrated the Wen family under a false identity. Perhaps it wasn't a setup, but rather that his father was genuinely involved in Cai Xiangong's affairs, which led to the confiscation of his property and his conviction.

Once this thought arises, it inevitably leads to something worse.

How much has Pei Lingjun found out?

She didn't choose to marry him in this life, making it even more difficult for him to gain Wen Tao's trust.

Was the time he encountered danger outside the city a staged act of self-inflicted injury to gain Wen Tao's trust?

Wen Shu suddenly shivered and huddled in the corner, unable to stop trembling. She hadn't even realized this at the time; she had been so careless.

An overwhelming feeling of suffocation gripped her throat, making it difficult to even breathe for a moment.

Wen Shu hugged herself tightly, forcing herself to calm down. However, the once quiet and orderly mountain village suddenly became restless, and the sound of disordered footsteps came from afar.

A young man dressed in a light blue round-necked robe stood confidently and calmly amidst a group of mountain bandits who were walking in disarray and looking flustered.

He seemed completely unconcerned about being surrounded by bandits, and strode forward, forcing the bandits to retreat repeatedly.

Even though Wen Shu didn't want to admit it, she recognized the person at a glance.

It is Pei Lingjun.

Did Father send him? Is he here to save me?

This joyful thought had barely formed when it was shattered by the voice of a young man in the distance.

"There are many ways to get the Wen family to confess their crimes and be executed. Does the chief leader really have to choose the path of mutual destruction?"

Like a blow to the head, it shattered Wen Shu's illusions.

—He didn't come to save me; he came to take my life!
