Chapter 61

Chapter 61

Killing him directly might incur the wrath of the Wen family, but letting him go would leave one feeling resentful.

"Are you the nephew of the literary traitor?"

The main room was simple and could barely be considered a reception room.

Three or four bandits with knives surrounded Pei Lingjun.

The young man, unarmed, naturally sat down on the side of the main room. He opened the teapot and saw that it only contained water. He immediately lost interest and put down his tea, his disdain undisguised.

"Not at all." Pei Lingjun sat on the round wooden backrest like an old man, one leg crossed over the other, his posture relaxed. Anyone who didn't know him would think he was the leader of Dragon Tiger Stronghold.

"I am Pei Lingjun, the valiant guard of Jijing." The young man looked directly at the man at the head of the table, paused, and then said, "I am Pei Lingjun."

Everyone in the main room held their breath. Tan Deyou was stunned for several breaths before he came to his senses. He stood up abruptly and said in disbelief, "You're the Valiant Dragon Guard?!"

Tu Wen looked the young man up and down. He had an extraordinary demeanor and was clearly a skilled fighter, as evidenced by his performance in the battle outside the city. How could the traitor Wen have such a nephew?

Pei Lingjun didn't explain. He took out a jade pendant from his pocket and tossed it to a nearby henchman. The henchman was stunned for a moment, then quickly ran to the leader and handed over the jade pendant.

The jade pendant, made of mutton fat jade, is engraved with several large, gold-stamped characters: "Xiaolong Guard Envoy." In the lower left corner are three smaller characters: "Pei Lingjun."

Is he really an official from the capital?

Outside the main room, Wen Shu, who had followed, heard these words. Upon hearing them, she couldn't help but twitch the corners of her mouth, revealing a bleak, bitter smile. Pei Lingjun, you finally dare to admit your identity.

Inside the house, the bandits surrounding Pei Lingjun all took a step back in unison. They had never seen such a high-ranking official before, one whose position was even higher than that of the literary bandits!

The expressions on everyone's faces changed in an instant.

Tu Wen was secretly surprised and waved away the bandit with the knife.

"I do not wish to destroy your Dragon Tiger Stronghold. If the Dragon Tiger Stronghold agrees to make a deal with me, I can ensure the safety of your entire stronghold."

Tan Deyou sneered, "Officials are all full of empty words of benevolence and morality, but they're all lies. Even if you're the Commander of the Valiant Guard, who knows if you're an envoy from the Wen family? I think you're just here to rescue the Wen family's daughter!"

"The fourth daughter of the Wen family?" Pei Lingjun chuckled lightly. "I have no relation to the Wen family's daughter. What does it matter to me whether she lives or dies? And why should I save her?"

The young man slowly straightened the corner of his robe. "I came to Anyang to investigate the Grand Tutor's crimes. To be honest, I have already obtained evidence that Wen Tao embezzled money and taxes for the Grand Tutor. Soon, the embezzled silver will be transported to Jijing through a special channel. When the evidence of the embezzled money is presented to His Majesty, not only will the Wen family be implicated, but even the Grand Tutor will not be able to escape punishment."

"Therefore, if the chief Boss angers Wen Tao at this time, it may arouse his suspicion. If he then burns the evidence and changes the route, it will not benefit either of us. Wouldn't that be a losing proposition?"

Wen Shu, hiding in the corner behind the wall, heard everything clearly, but her numb and sluggish nerves could no longer stir any emotion.

"So he really didn't come to save the Wen family girl..."

Suddenly, someone in the main room said something, which elicited a noncommittal smile from Pei Lingjun.

Although Wen Shu had long known about Pei Lingjun's various pretenses, she never expected that at the moment when his lies were exposed, her numb heart would still feel a slight, painful twitch.

Her heart was pounding so hard it felt like it would burst out of her mouth. Wen Shu was panting heavily, and no one was coming to her rescue.

To survive, Wen Shu had to run down the mountain on her own. She held her breath and was about to descend when she turned around and was suddenly met with a sinister smile.

It was a thin man with a gloomy face, who was looking at her and laughing, his eyes staring straight at her, giving off an indescribable eeriness.

Wen Shu instinctively opened her mouth to shout, but before she could speak, a pair of hands covered her mouth. Wen Shu opened her eyes wide in fear, her throat whimpering but unable to make a sound!

The gloomy man whispered in her ear, "You heard it too, everyone has abandoned you now. No one can save you here. Why don't you come with me, and you'll live a life of luxury from now on—"
