Chapter 73

Chapter 73

Hanxiang tied a cloak around her neck. Seeing that Wenshu was in a bad mood, she assumed that she was worried about Aunt Zhou's illness and said a lot of comforting words.

"Miss, getting married is a way to ward off bad luck. Tomorrow is the day you and Mr. Qi will be married. If your aunt is happy, she might just recover from her illness!"

The little girl became happy and busied herself hanging lanterns under the porch outside the house.

The dim light illuminated the various red silk ribbons with butterflies and mandarin ducks inside the mansion, just as she had when she happily married Pei Lingjun.

"Hanxiang." Wen Shu called out to her, took out a contract of indenture from her sleeve, and stuffed it into her hand.

Hanxiang was stunned. She immediately knelt down and cried, "Miss, do you not want me anymore? Did I do something wrong to upset you...?"

"Get up first," Wen Shu said with a wry smile, pulling Han Xiang to her feet. "Han Xiang, how many years have you been by my side?"

“Replying to Miss, I have been with you since I was a child, for about ten years.”

Hanxiang was bought for her by Zhou Yun, and the indenture has always been with Wen Shu. Over the years, she has only had this one trustworthy maid by her side.

"Tomorrow I am getting married. The First Madam personally selected two maids to accompany me in my dowry. You are to stay in the mansion. Now that Mother is not here, I am letting you leave so that you will not be bullied by others in the mansion."

"I won't leave!" Hanxiang sobbed softly. "I'm not going anywhere. If you won't take me with you, then I'll stay. You'll always come back eventually!"

"Listen to me, Hanxiang. I'm doing this for your own good. Without me protecting you, who in the Wen family will be easy to get along with?"

Wen Shu forcefully shoved the indenture into her hand, murmuring, "If you can't bear to part with it, then watch me get married tomorrow before you leave."

Hanxiang cried uncontrollably.

As night fell, the wind squeezed through the cracks in the window, making a whistling and mournful sound.

After taking a bath, Wen Shu casually put on a thin gauze undergarment, which she loosely tied around her body, and slowly moved to the window to close it.

Unexpectedly, a hand suddenly gripped the bottom of the window frame through the gap in the closed window, blocking the view in the middle. Wen Shu was startled and took a step back.

The next moment, under Wen Shu's watchful eyes, the long, slender hand lifted the window. When their eyes met, Wen Shu was stunned for a moment.

"you..."

Pei Lingjun seemed to have rushed over from somewhere, with a sword at his waist and a somewhat tired expression. Upon seeing Wen Shu, he gave a bitter smile without saying a word.

"You're asleep already?"

Wen Shu's alarm bells rang loudly. She took a few steps back and looked at him through the window. "What are you doing here?"

Seeing her wary expression, speaking kindly to everyone but treating him coldly, a bitter feeling welled up in his throat. Pei Lingjun nimbly climbed over the window and approached her.

He gritted his teeth, "A-Shu is getting married tomorrow, so naturally I've traveled a long way to congratulate her on her happy marriage."

The young man was extremely tall, and when he looked down at people, there was always a sense of unspoken pressure. Wen Shu took a breath and was forced to retreat repeatedly by him.

He didn't seem like he came to offer congratulations; he seemed more like he came to silence them.

With her knees touching the bed, Wen Shu was already stuck with nowhere to retreat. She froze, not daring to move, and stared at him with her brown almond eyes, silently rebuking his presumptuous behavior of barging in.

Pei Lingjun seemed oblivious to Wen Shu's accusing gaze. He leaned closer, inhaling the scent of soap after her bath, and his eyes darkened.

"Qi Chengxuan is no good man. Do you know what outrageous things he has done? His marriage to you is merely a temporary measure to appease the Qi family!"
