Chapter 57 Moonlight

...

The night deepened.

The police officers guarding Nishimoto and Hirata at the event center also began to sit by the door, their heads nodding off.

Something suddenly touched a police officer's shoulder, waking him up.

Looking up, I realized it was Toyama, the young detective who had been staying on the island for the past two days.

"Excuse me……"

“I suddenly remembered something and would like to see Mr. Hirata,” Yoruichi Toyama said in a low voice.

Having witnessed him sitting down and conversing on equal footing with his superior from Tokyo, the police officer felt that the request was not unreasonable.

Anyway, as everyone knows, many cases in the Metropolitan Police Department are solved thanks to detectives.

Yoruichi Toyama was let into the house without much persuasion.

Although he couldn't sleep for various reasons, Hirata, who wasn't very awake, was clearly taken aback.

"You...who are you?..."

Seeing Hirata's face react as if he were a complete stranger, Yoruichi Toyama felt an even stronger strange feeling in her heart.

"I am Toyama, the president of the Black Cat Detective Agency," he introduced himself formally.

“Mr. Hirata, we should have met yesterday.”

"Wh...what did you say?" Hirata's eyes darted around, not even daring to look him in the eye. "I...I haven't seen you before...you mean yesterday?..."

As if trying to recall something, Hirata slightly raised his head and looked up at the ceiling.

Yoruichi Toyama asked directly, "You said you were attacked on your way home, when did that happen?"

"Last...last night..."

"Didn't you see who it was?"

"No... it was just a sudden attack. I was knocked down from behind, and when I woke up I was in the warehouse..."

His timid tone, his darting eyes, his submissive demeanor—everything about Hirata was exactly the same as when he was seen at Kuroiwa's house yesterday.

But he seemed to have no recollection of the person in front of him.

Yoruichi Toyama pondered for a moment, then suddenly stepped forward and rolled up Hirata's sleeves.

"You...this..." Hirata, not knowing what he was going to do, hurriedly tried to pull his hand away, but didn't dare.

Fortunately, Toyama Yoru took one look and let go.

"Mr. Kuroiwa, do you like reading?" he asked abruptly.

Hirata shook his head blankly.

"No, Mr. Kuroiwa never liked... Ah!"

As if realizing he had said something wrong, Hirata tried to cover his mouth with his hand, but his hand stopped in mid-air.

No matter how he reacts, it will arouse suspicion, hence his bewildered state.

Yuanshan Yeyi nodded, said "Sorry to bother you," and left the room.

After exiting the activity center, he walked halfway around the building and came to the back facing the beach.

There were no lights on the beach, but a full moon hung in the sky, casting a gentle glow.

Like flowing music.

Yoruichi Toyama silently determined her direction and then headed towards the sea.

But a hand grabbed him from behind.

"Yoruichi, what... are you going to do?"

It was Akemi's voice, but it wasn't as gentle and calm as usual.

He seemed to be trembling with worry.

Yoruichi Toyama turned around in surprise.

"Akami? It's so late, what are you doing here..."

"Shouldn't I be the one asking that?" Mingmei paused, then countered, "Why did you come here alone? And..."

Her gaze fell upon the sea under the moonlight.

The seawater was a deep, dark blue, possessing a captivating allure.

But it also appears quite dangerous.

"You've done your best in this matter, there's no need for..."

As Yoruichi listened to the young lady's hesitant words of comfort, she suddenly understood something.

So he laughed somewhat awkwardly.

"No, you think I..."

It was so embarrassing that he couldn't bear to continue.

He simply gripped Akemi's hand tightly.

"Come on, come with me to take a look."

"What are you looking at?" Mingmei blinked, momentarily ignoring the fact that the two were holding hands.

"I have a hypothesis that I'd like to verify..."

...

As I approached the beach, I found that instead of the jagged rocks I had imagined, there were neat breakwaters.

The seawater lapped against the embankment, making a soft, rustling sound that was especially clear in the still night.

"If that's the case, the body will be very difficult to recover, right?"

Yoruichi Toyama said this out of the blue.

"A corpse?"

Akemi's voice sounded a little surprised, but her fingers didn't tremble and remained warm.

It has to be said that this young lady is getting bolder and bolder.

Yoruichi Toyama couldn't help but laugh.

"If you walk from the back of the activity center and push Kawashima into the sea, it would be around this area."

He explained.

"But how can we drag the body back and put it into the activity room from such a embankment?"

"So you mean... the scene where Kawashima was actually killed wasn't here?"

“No, I don’t think there’s anywhere else…” Yoruichi Toyama shook her head, her eyes searching for something on the embankment.

"I'm just not quite sure about the specific method, like whether it's a rope, a fishing net, or something else..."

"So, I want to ask someone."

As soon as he finished speaking, his gaze also fell on the distant shore.

It was a riverbank facing the moonlight. Because of the distance, only a very small figure could be seen standing quietly.

“See,” he turned to Mingmei and smiled, “I told you we could find someone.”

Mingmei clearly suppressed her surprise and followed him to the other side of the embankment.
