Chapter 63 APTX4869

Night fell.

Because of the strict time constraints, the high school students participating in the experiment had all obediently gone to sleep, and the experimental animals, after a round of drug injections, were also quietly staying in their cages, ignoring the inexplicable changes happening to the humans.

Compared to the laboratory where the animals were housed, the other room next door seemed unusually spacious.

A half-moon cast its dim light through the window.

Seemingly deliberately avoiding the light from the window, the three figures were hidden in the shadows.

"Why keep that troublemaker around? He's a destabilizing factor here."

A man's cold voice questioned, and it could be recognized as Nishimura, one of the two men in black.

"But I don't think it's a good idea to send him away now that the experiment isn't over yet?"

The other voice, of course, comes from Narita, who likes to laugh it off.

“I’m asking her now—” Nishimura didn’t immediately refute his companion, but turned to the third person.

"—Sherry!"

"Ask me?" came the cool, girlish voice, but it sounded even less emotional than Nishimura's, as if she was completely unaffected by the two people's questioning.

"Do you even have the right to ask me?"

"Don't forget who was in charge of this experiment."

Nishimura was clearly taken aback by the retort, and his breathing became heavy.

Narita then chuckled and smoothed things over.

"It's you, it's you, Sherry, we will never forget that."

"But Sherry, we heard that things haven't been going well for you in the organization lately. It seems like you had a big falling out with Boss Gin?"

"You don't want to lose your core position in the organization because of a mishap in the experiment, do you?"

The girl "Shirley's" face was expressionless in the shadows, except for her eyes which shone with a cold light.

"I am confident in the experiment, of course. As for my situation in the organization, it is not up to two small fry who do not even have code names to worry about me."

“You…” Narita, who was usually very amiable, seemed to be angered for a moment, but in the end he didn’t dare to say anything more.

The person appointed by the organization to lead this experiment was indeed this young "Sherry".

The organization has very strict requirements regarding whether its members obey orders.

If Sherry really goes back and reports to "the higher-ups," saying a few bad things about them...

The room fell silent for a moment.

Finally, Nishimura coughed and said directly, "Give me the medicine."

"There are still three days until the next experiment, and you want it now?" Sherry's voice carried a hint of doubt.

"Besides, wouldn't it be more reasonable for me to distribute the medicine to 'them'?"

Nishimura simply snorted.

"This is Gin's idea. Why don't you contact him?"

Upon hearing him mention the name Gin, "Sherry" seemed to pause for a moment before taking out a plastic pillbox.

"Only 4?"

Nishimura opened it, took a look, and then asked another question.

"What, do you want me to eat one with you, or are you two just curious about the taste of APTX4869?"

This time, Nishimura did not back down after being confronted by "Sherry".

"I need to know whether this medicine is real or fake."

"Then try eating one now."

Shirley was not going to back down.

Nishimura forced a breath of cold air out from between his teeth.

Seeing that the situation was about to reach a stalemate again, Narita had no choice but to act as a peacemaker once more.

"Um, Sherry, you should have some spare medicine on hand, right?"

"We can just try it on any animal here!"

Shirley scoffed, then didn't object further, simply following the two of them out of the room and into the animal laboratory.

Nishimura opened the cage of the mice and was about to take one out when his hand suddenly stopped in mid-air.

What was that sound?

The three of them held their breath at the same time, and there was complete silence around them.

Sherry scoffed again, "A mental overreaction."

Nishimura, however, did not completely dispel his suspicions and gave Narita a wink.

Narita walked to the laboratory door, opened it, looked down the corridor for a while, then closed the door and came back.

"Don't worry, there's no one outside."

Nishimura then randomly grabbed a white mouse and forcibly stuffed a capsule he had taken from the medicine box into its mouth.

The mouse, startled from its sleep, struggled for a while, then slowly went limp, its four paws stiff and motionless.

"It works so fast!" Narita exclaimed in amazement.

That's the dosage for human use.

Sherry offered a dismissive explanation and then took out a medicine box from beside her and handed it over.

This time, Nishimura had no doubts and took out a capsule to replenish his medicine box.

Then, the stiff mouse was put back into the cage, and the cage door was locked.

"Proceed as planned in three days."

...

On the morning of the fourth day of the experiment, the day after the animal experiments were completed, the assistants discovered something was wrong when they went to the lab to collect the animals they had raised.

Of the five mice under Sakiriko's care, one was lying face up in the corner of the cage, clearly having been dead for some time.

Although she doesn't usually have any particular feelings for small animals, Shikiriko was still surprised and saddened.

With Miyuki's encouragement, the two girls decided to properly bury the dead white mouse in the yard.

However, as soon as they stepped out of the laboratory, they saw Shiho Miyano coming towards them.

"Have any animals already died?"

Shiho Miyano spoke as if she were discussing the weather in a country on the other side of the world, with an air of nonchalance.
