Chapter 80 To arrest or not to arrest, that is the question.

As Akechi said, what Kidd performed on the rooftop of the Beihu Hotel that night was a spectacular large-scale live magic show.

He could finally go home and sleep contentedly, but the police officers of the Third Division suffered, having to remove the curtain that covered the entire exterior wall overnight.

Otherwise, if the public sees it by dawn, the police's credibility will drop by who knows how many points.

When they were retrieving the curtain, they discovered a safety rope that had been attached to the wall long ago. The rope did not reach the ground, but it extended to a height of more than ten stories.

It's impossible to determine which room Kidd went to.

With no other option, Inspector Nakamori had to lead his men back home.

This can be considered an admission of defeat.

However, it wasn't that nothing was discovered at the same time.

The most obvious thing was the few lines of text printed on the inside of the screen:

"April 19"

"I will be traveling from Yokohama."

Queen Celeste

"Accept the true Dark Star."

Phantom Thief Kid

"This...this is a notice!" Inspector Nakamori, who had been thoroughly tricked, looked at the words and was so angry that his mustache stood up.

"That bastard Kidd had planned this all along—a feint—before finally stealing the treasure from the cruise ship!"

This conclusion had already been deduced by Hakuba Saguru and others earlier, so it wasn't surprising at all.

Inspector Nakamori felt deeply ashamed that he hadn't consulted with the detectives.

"We need to immediately notify the chairman of the Suzuki Group to cancel the Queen Celeste cruise!"

He left in a hurry, while the detectives looked at each other with helpless expressions.

“How could that be!” Conan spoke first. “I heard from Uncle Suzuki that April 19th is the 60th anniversary of the Suzuki Foundation, and they are going to hold a grand celebration party on the cruise ship.”

"That's impossible to cancel."

"Yes, those tycoons are all incredibly stubborn."

Mingzhi and Baiba Tan nodded in agreement.

They made no attempt to hide their contempt for the chaebols.

Only Toyama Yoru yawned indifferently, as if it were none of his business.

"You rascal!" Mingzhi nudged him. "Are you really just here to watch the show?"

"I remember someone who received a commission from Chairman Suzuki?"

"Yes, the letter of commission said that I should protect the Dark Star and capture the Phantom Thief Kid."

Because she was tired, Yoruichi Toyama looked listless.

"Although we haven't caught Kid yet, the Dark Star hasn't been stolen either. From that perspective, Kogoro, Conan, and I can be considered to have done something of note."

"As for Kidd..."

He chuckled and looked in the direction Inspector Nakamori had left.

"We've been trying to catch Mr. Nakamori for so long and haven't succeeded. Is it my place to worry about him?"

Hakuba Saguru and Conan both chuckled awkwardly.

Only those with wisdom who understood him discerned the underlying meaning.

"If you were Inspector Nakamori, what would you do now?"

"Huh?" Yoruichi Toyama's exaggerated expression of surprise was clearly feigned.

"I remember that it was your First Division that hired me as a consultant, so why am I also responsible for the affairs of the Third Division?"

"Will you pay?"

"Just think of it as a casual chat between friends." Mingzhi completely ignored his question and continued to press, "Do you have any good ideas?"

"There is a way, but it's not a good way, it's a stupid way." Yoruichi Toyama chuckled, her face saying, "You wouldn't do it even if I told you."

“Kid escaped into the guest room from the outer wall in this direction. If I were Inspector Nakamori, even if I couldn’t check every single guest room, I would at least check the front desk register to confirm the identities of all the guests.”

"And the museum. Kidd's feint this time was definitely not because he was afraid of the police and detectives, but because he already knew that the Dark Star on display was a replica, so he must have been to the museum."

Wise listened and remained silent.

He was certainly aware of the Third Investigation Division's methods of pursuing Kidd, especially Inspector Nakamori's methods over the years.

Basically, it's all bark and no bite.

Despite the vast amount of resources used, there were numerous loopholes on site, and no follow-up investigation was conducted afterward.

Every time Kidd ran away, he would mutter a few curses behind his disappearing figure.

Turn around and you're a hero again.

Such a thorough post-incident review, especially a large-scale investigation, is something that most police officers, let alone Inspector Nakamori, would not do.

It's a thankless task, and you might even get reprimanded by your boss, which doesn't fit the style of a Japanese salary thief.

With his position in the First Division and his background in the Gold Watch Group, Mingzhi could at least offer his opinions on matters concerning the First Division.

However, the three classes are simply too far away to reach.

"Well, but..." Although he said he couldn't control it, he habitually put himself in her shoes and thought about it for a while before raising another concern.

"You can use a fake identity on the register, right?"

“The identity is fake, but the signature is real,” Yoruichi Toyama said. “The police don’t have any information about Kid’s identity, but don’t they even have a handwriting sample?”

If he knew that Gao Yuan, who had been imprisoned three times, didn't even have his fingerprints registered, well...

"Besides, this isn't something that can be resolved in one go," Yoruichi Toyama added, thinking about the efficiency of the Japanese police.

"But given how often Inspector Nakamori deals with Kid, given time, they can gradually narrow down the scope and eventually pinpoint certain individuals."

"That's why I said it's a clumsy method, but some police officers, you know, won't even use a clumsy method, so you can't blame anyone else, right?"

After saying that, he waved to his friends, picked up the cat, and walked away.

"Oh, right, I'll drive you." Mingzhi turned around and followed him.
