Chapter 10: Passing the Interview

According to Zheng Li, human understanding of biology is very superficial and its development lags far behind that of physics.

Regarding physics, human eyes can observe the universe 13.6 billion years ago and the first celestial bodies after the Big Bang.

At the microscopic level, physicists can observe units smaller than molecules: atoms.

Biology has yet to fully document the functions of protein molecules in the human body.

The mage is able to observe the workings of cells and compounds directly at the microscopic level through willpower. After thousands of years of research, carbon-based life has no secrets in front of the mage.

Zheng Li's knowledge of computational biology did not surprise Li Xulin, but he was shocked by Zheng Li's claim that he had completed all the professional courses of his undergraduate mathematics major.

Basic mathematics courses at the university level include mathematical analysis, higher algebra, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, complex analysis, real analysis, topology, probability theory, and so on. Learning these courses is not an easy task.

Li Xulin interrupted Zheng Li's self-introduction: "You just said that you have completed all your major courses during your university years."

"Assuming what you're saying is true, can I assume that you have a great interest in and talent for mathematics?"

"With your mathematical talent, you could have gone much further down the path of mathematics. There's no need for you to go into computational biology."

"In addition, computational biology uses more computer science knowledge, so many of your undergraduate major courses are not relevant."

"Computational biology is mostly about programming, algorithms, and probability theory."

For the mage, he had no interest in the mathematics and biology of Earth; these were merely means to restore his mage abilities.

"It is extremely difficult for mathematics to break through the theoretical system of predecessors and create a truly valuable theoretical system on its own."

"The edifice of biology hasn't even had its foundation laid yet; the various problems are relatively isolated, and research plans and solutions for problem A are useless for problem B."

"More importantly, I discovered that I am more interested in biology."

Zheng Li felt that he was being too conservative; what he could bring to the field of biology on Earth was a revolution.

Li Xulin felt that he was young but had a big mouth: "I suppose you have already read the paper I assigned to you."

Zheng Li replied neither humbly nor arrogantly, "I have seen it."

Do you think you understood it?

"I understand."

"Then tell us about your understanding of this paper, and what work can be done around it afterward."

Tumor-Triggered Geometrical Shape Switch of Chimeric Peptide for Enhanced in Vivo Tumor Internalization and Photodynamic Therapy is a rare piece of work from the School of Life Sciences that we can proudly present last year.

Although ACS nano is not as difficult to publish as NC and AM, this paper has a high citation count, being cited 77 times in just one year and viewed 4122 times on ACS.

"The paper mainly discusses the important internalization role of geometrically shaped nanoparticles within cells. In the article, the authors designed a chimera that formed after cancer cells underwent further acidification in vitro..."

"The paper can explore whether various cancer cell reactants can target drugs to act on cancer cells in turn."

Zheng Li spoke for about twenty minutes, explaining very well the difficulties in the experimental design of the paper, the authors' thinking behind it, and the directions that could be expanded.

Let alone first-year math students, even doctoral students in the biology department rarely read this paper to this extent within a week.

Since Li Xulin was not the author of the paper, there were some points in the author's experimental design that he had not thought of. It was only when Zheng Li pointed them out that he realized there was such a clever idea.

Li Xulin couldn't help but sigh inwardly, "He really is a genius. No wonder Liu Gui gave him such a high evaluation. If we could recruit him to study for a master's degree in biology, we would be very lucky."

Jiangcheng University's School of Biology has two academicians, which is their source of confidence. The School of Mathematics, on the other hand, once had an academician, but that was later poached by Harbin Institute of Technology.

Most of the professors in the School of Mathematical Sciences work on partial differential equations, which are said to make up half of the research in the school.

Having an academician gives them a lot more confidence when it comes to recruiting people.

Li Xulin's expression softened considerably compared to before: "Good, in principle I agree to your joining the Biomedical Polymer Materials Laboratory. In addition, I have a personal request: I hope you can team up with Li Miaomiao for this year's Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) and take her with you."

"Even if you don't agree, I will still let you join our polymer laboratory."

Zheng Li asked, "What is the American Mathematical Contest in Modeling (AMCM)?"

Li Xulin: "It's a mathematical modeling competition organized by America. With your level, you're more than qualified to participate and win an award. The only difference is the level of the award you can win."

Zheng Li searched his memory for a moment, and after figuring out what mathematical modeling was, he nodded and said, "No problem."

......

"Everyone can ask the teacher any questions they want, and you can pay to register only if you are satisfied with the answer."

"Although the teacher is a freshman, his professional level is definitely no less than that of teachers in external tutoring institutions."

Zheng Li sat on the classroom podium without saying a word, while Li Miaomiao stood beside him and shouted.

More people came than Zheng Li had expected, roughly forty or fifty, but very few were genuine Jiangcheng University students. Zheng Li was very impressed with Li Miaomiao's competence.
